With the synchromesh it's easy. The shifter won't move into the
next gate until the speeds match. Just apply a bit of pressure
until it moves, then snap it into gear.

Without synchromesh, the shifts can be faster because the matching
speed can be anticipated just a bit. But it's also a lot easier
to miss and make a lot of noise. "Just lightening the truck a bit
by taking some metal off the gears."

With 7 (rare) 9, 10, 13, 15, or 18 speed transmissions there is
lots of opportunity to practice.

Truck driver call this clutch-less shifting "floating" and many,
many of them do it. Most truck still use manual transmissions
without synchromsh - but that is changing...

U... actually, more likely it is British Standard, or Whitworth.

In any case, Euan, good to hear from you. We Yanks are an odd lot when it
comes to politics, so thanks for your patience. Since we have no King, we
have to make our own way and that always leads to discussion and of course,
who ever is talking is always right.. haha..

Don't give up on us, drop in and visit more often. I'm something of a new

I'm well on my way to collecting a matched set of 123 Diesel Mercedes, one
of each model.

It can be done, but requires a good battery and starter.
You basically start the car in gear - 1st of reverse as desired.
You can pop it out of gear with little throttle applied, and stop with the
brakes as usual.
You have to "match shift" going up and down the gears - match the engine
speed as closely as you can to the next gear - either up or down.

I learned this way back when - the clutch cable in my 1951 VW broke while I
was on the other side of town - figured it out and drove home without
incident. It helped that this tranny had NO synchromesh - VW hadn;t figured
that out yet, so I used to matching the RPM's/gears anyway.

The technique works even better with an MB tranny - so smooth either with
or without the clutch.

So basically I need to get under the car and open the bleed screw while having
somebody push the pedal to see if I get pressure? I assume it I do then they
points to dead slave cylinder. If not then dead master cylinder?

When the clutches are really good, pressing the pedal does feel like
nothing is connected. If the pedal comes back up when you push it down,

I'd guess the slave cylinder is dead.  When you press the pedal in, do you get
pressure (fluid output) at the slave bleeder?  If yes, the slave cylinder is
probably dead.

[MBZ] 240D rehab/clutch

Got this 81 240D moved into the shop and jacked up. I examined the underside
and discovered it’s going to need all the typical 123 front end work. Will need
ball joints, tie rods, and control arm bushings for sure. Have not looked at
the upper control arms yet. Basically I probably need to just redo the entire
front end. Also needs at least a front flex disk and center support. Moved on
to the clutch. I hooked my pressure bleeder up to the brake reservoir then
opened the bleeder on the slave cylinder and got a good steady stream of fluid
out, no bubbles. Let it run for a while. Does this mean my issue is not air on
the system? When pressing the clutch it pushed down and comes right back up but
does not feel like it is actually doing doing anything. I pulled the under dash
cover and nothing is disconnected there. How do I go about figuring out what
the actual issue is as far as if it’s a master cylinder issue, slave cylinder
or something else?

I want to get the clutch fixed first so I can at least move the car around.
After I do that the next priority is getting the lift going because I do not
want to do all this front end and driveshaft working laying on my back under
the car. Screw that.

LOL, no, our tyres are just as good as yours.

This north is up and south is down thing is just a mental construct. It’s kinda
handy to get our puny human brains organised around viewing the planet that

doesn’t have ups and downs, Norths or Souths.

Scary, eh. Let’s just be grateful that the slingshot effects of rotation are
still out-muscled by the sucking effects of gravity. For the moment.

I had to replace rear bearing on my Volvo. In theory it was simply
unbolt and replace, but actually getting the old hub assembly out was a
nightmare. Of course on the YouTube video it popped out with a couple of
hammer taps. For me, it was hours of hammering, cursing, and many cans
of beer before it came loose. The replacement got a liberal coating of
anti-seize but hopefully will last the remaining life of the car.

Or you could buy this:

Something’s up with this car, I think. Note the panel match between the hood
and the right front fender and headlights. Looks like maybe the front got
pranged and poorly fixed.

They’ve had it listed off and on for the last couple of months. I don’t recall
wha their last ask was, but I recall it was more than $5k.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The Bug was Re: Sticking my neck out

2020-05-16 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Actually, isolation is the only way to stop the spread. This is an unusual
virus in that it's possible to actually stop the spread, difficulty is that it
can have a long incubation period with virus shedding going on for some days
before symptoms get bad enough to send someone in for testing.

This isn't the first time, either -- SARS and MERS are similar viruses, just
much less transmissible. Another long forgotten incident involved fur animals
in Manchuria in the early part of the 1900s, when no vaccine was possible.
That outbreak was traced back to harvesitng sick animals for fur, and was
stopped by guess what, cloth masks and social distancing.

The key to stopping the spread is testing and contact tracing -- if people can
be tested easily, it's possible to break the chain of transmission, and when no
more people are getting infected, eventually the virus will no long reproduce.

My local county has always had a pretty strong public health department, and
has been on top of tracing and testing since the start -- luckily, we are more
or less remote here, and full state wide social restrictions were in place
before the first cases showed up. The result is that we have just over 200
cases for 200,000 people and two deaths. Case number per day is down to five
or six, and I believe nearly all of them were people in observation for
exposure.

Couple people refused to self isolate and were promptly served with stay at
home orders by a local judge -- we still have quarantine laws on the books from
when there were no antibiotics or vaccines for common illnesses like scarlet
fever a measles.

while it may seem very harsh and draconian, the lockdown in China worked. You
have to understand the filtering of news there, but I suspect the reported case
numbers are reasonably accurate -- if the Parry lies too much, they will be
overthrown, it's how things work in China. South Korea and Tiawan, both of
whom had serious issues with SARS in the 90s, have very low cases as well.

One point more -- nightclubs opened in Seol, and at least 126 cases have come
from a single club over a couple nights. This is what I'm worried about with
the lunatics that squeal about how their "rights" are being infringed by public
health measures. Only takes one jerk ignoring the health rules to infect
hundreds of people in close quarters. Ditto for the boob that insisted he run
his barber shop in spite of the shutdown -- he's now positive and who knows how
many of his clients are too as a result.

I definitely error on the side of caution, it's why I've driven a Benz for
decades. Hardly an imposition to wear a mask compared to getting really,
really sick or killing my elderly mother. We are not all isolated sovereign
states with no responsibilities, we are a community and need to remember
everyone is entitled to what we are. Or as my Grandmother used to say "You
have your rights, true -- until they run into mine, and you are standing on my
toes"

Far too many people who blow on about their "right" to do whatever they want
are notably absent when it's time to take responsibility for the results of
their actions.

 Seller's description…

This is your opportunity to own a legendary V12 Twin Turbo Mercedes CL
600. This 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL600 is powered by a 493 hp
twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V12 plus is equipped with the Renntech
performance upgrades, Eisenmann Performance exhaust and is backed by a
5-speed automatic transmission. Custom 19" HRE wheels and the tires are
in good condition This is very fast car and is in very good condition.
Unfortunately, I don't know all of the car's history, the car is part of
a family member's estate and we are helping to liquidate the estate. The
car has 118K Miles. The body is in very good condition as well as the
interior. Several items will need attention such as the trunk lift
assist mechanism, the rear screen motor is not working, and the radio
will not stay on for more the several seconds. The car is nice but not
perfect. Body condition: the lower air dam has several scratches and is
missing the left lower screen. A protective film was added to the front
of the car and needs to be removed, small crack in passenger side
windshield, see pics. Ask as many questions as you would like. Local
pick up only.

The problem with isolation is the 2 week waiting period, it's very hard to know
who to isolate until it's too late

No one has been able to develop a vaccine for the cold, but we do have
marginally effective vaccines for the flu.If my assumptions are correct,
expecting a vaccine for Covid-19 to be effective is an exercise in wishful

I think that Karl is correct in that if we contain this virus via isolation so
it can't spread beyond those it has infected already, we can stop it in it's

Americans don't trust and won't listen to those who know about this stuff, from
the President on down, there is no hope of stopping it. We will all get it,
many of us will be very sick and permanently debilitated by it, and too many
will die from it. That having been said, the planet is over populated ...

I'm with Rick, we're all going to get this eventually, it's essentially a new,
much worse, flu. Get used to the idea now. This who are waiting for a vaccine
ignore the fact that the record for a vaccine release is 4 years.

My point is exactly that: many people (including me) want to minimize this
thing by thinking that all the people getting sick are somehow not like
them, but this is not the case. Statistically sure most young healthy
people are not going to die from it. But it still makes normal, otherwise
healthy, middle age people very sick in a way that influenza does not, over
a much longer interval measured in weeks rather than days. I am talking
about not being able to speak in full sentences for weeks, being short of
breath talking on the phone. Having pain in your lungs when you breathe.
For weeks.

I think the flu comparison article I posted speaks to this. Covid deaths
this year are multiples of influenza deaths even in a bad year.

Exercise is always good, as is eating right, not smoking and not being fat.

I am not trying to alarm anyone, or advocate for any particular response,
other than to rank it higher on the list of threats in your thinking than
the flu, take appropriate precautions, etc. Saying we are all going to get
it is rather defeatist when it is clearly possible to suppress to virtually
zero e.g. Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, S. Korea. I dont think any
of us want to give it to our parents or elderly friends. Wash hands, wear a
mask if you are close to vulnerable people for more than 30 minutes in a
poorly ventilated space, these are sensible precautions that don't cost
much. Maybe we will start to track it better so we dont end up shutting the
whole economy down.

Ok maybe I was silly to bring it up, especially for Euan in New Zealand
where they dont even have any of this disease.

Maybe the meth jokes arent so bad after all.

As you were.

Hey guys, quick question. I poured some sea foam into the engine,
pouring about half a bottle where the oil goes a few days ago and now
I'm noticing a smell and a little smoke comming out the tail pipe pipe.
It is safe to assume that the seafood is doing its job or can something
else be wrong.

Also whats the general consensus on using sea foam on older mercedes?
I drive a 97 E320.
Thanks for your help.

I would also consult Mr. Colt and his friends on this matter. A defense in
depth is
more reliable, hence that thing about eggs and baskets. I'm sure the same
applies here.

Exactly.

Re: [MBZ] OT hard ice cream vs soft

Also, propane-powered refrigerators (RV's, etc.) use an ammonia/water/hydrogen
mix
as the refrigerant. The one in my parents' camper failed. An overstuffed
freezer
was thought to be the cause. Apparently pounding on the coils with 1# hammers
while running down bumpy roads is not good for them...

Supposedly it was quite smelly!

Artisanal, grass fed, free range, antibiotic free ice cream?

We've had one of these scoops that has some sort of mystery juice inside of it
for years. It cuts through the hardest ice cream like buttah. All sorts of
warnings about not putting it in hot water or the dishwasher. Maybe it would
explode?
