Re: [MBZ] Dan's Garage A/C

2020-07-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Very true - but - if you properly seal the conditioned envelope of the living
space this is not the case.

I’ve mentioned this in the past, but it bears repeating:

Get 3-4 tubes of latex caulk. Go around your house, room by room, to the rooms
that are below the attic space. Seal around every penetration in the ceiling.
That means taking covers off light fixtures, electrical boxes, and HVAC vents.
Anywhere there is a gap, seal it with caulk. That includes the penetrations
where the cables enter the electrical boxes. Be sloppy, make sure you seal
things well. You can even seal the penetrations on exterior walls, too.

One of the biggest complaints you’ll hear/read about people installing attic
fans is that after they do so their energy consumption goes UP, the exact
opposite of what they were expecting. Why? Because they create negative
pressure in the attic area. The negative pressure pulls conditioned air out of
the living space through the gaps that I just described. This forces the
heating or cooling to have to work more to replace the conditioned air that’s
being sucked out of the living space.

The current home I live in is around 2500 SF. I used FOUR (4) tubes of latex
caulk to seal the penetrations in the ceiling throughout the house. Think about
squirting all of that caulk out in a 1/4” bead side by side and the surface
area it would cover. That’s roughly how much of an opening we would have into
our attic space from the living space. Yikes!

Do they overpower normal convection? I’m sure mine does, but in doing so it
moves a boatload of hot air out of the attic during daylight hours.

In my previous house I documented a drop in electrical consumption during peak
months that I directly attributed to the sealing of the ceiling penetrations
and addition of a solar attic fan of about $30-$40/month.

What would be a reasonable offer considering the status is unknown as to
why the diffs need replacing?  I guess I can see struts, unless it is a
pump or valve or controller issue but I wouldn't see diffs are being
that prone to failure at such low miles

Ah, so the fan isn't the only thing. Sounds, then, like you have thought
this through.

But we still want to know how your portable AC unit works ... there are

It gets dark, the fan stops turning, and ventilation reverts back to convection
as the attic was designed for. A ridge vent for stack effect with equal square

(in HVAC speak, supply is what comes out of the heating/cooling appliance
and return is what goes into it)

If you see a reduction of dust accumulation in the living area, the dust
is going somewhere.
If the device is downstream of the existing filters it's not going into
the filters.
Therefore the supply duct walls are a likely suspect.

Broken prechambers are so such fun.
Or is this a CDI?
If the glow system works and he's been using ether, refer back to the
first line in my message. More of a possibility than a certainty if the
prechambers were cold when he did it.

Drywall

I have an attic opening I could vent it into

The attic runs at a negative pressure of about 6” Hg due to the use of proper
ventilation practices and a solar powered fan

Because the dust will probably catch on the interior of the
supply duct before it even gets to any filters that may be in the
room supply vents.

2020-07-10 Thread MG via Mercedes
So wouldn't it make more sense to have that device in the return
air flow before the air gets to the filter into the air handler?
But then that depends on where your filter is. In my system I
have two filters, the first is in the return duct grill before
the air and dust in the house gets into the intake duct and then
another one before the air handler, so in that case this plasma
device would be between the two filters so that the dust that has
coagulated doesn't get into the evaporator fins to eventually
clog it up.

I may have to get one of these.

So, where _did_ the dust end up? On the walls of the ducts?

I don't know what the ceiling is made of, or what's above it, or what kind
of ventilation you have up there, but I can't imagine enhancing the heat
and humidity of a Florida attic to be a good thing.
