I remember putting air shocks on my buddy’s 65 Impala SS so he could fit those 
big tires. We all thought it was totally cool. It’s a wonder none of us killed 
ourselves doing it with just a bumper jack holding the car up, crawling down 
under it. 

The car rode like a log wagon after as there was basically no spring action in 
the suspension just whatever the air shocks did.

It is really just a different point of view. Automotive fads come and go.
Remember back in the late 60s early 70s, all the Camaros with jacked up 
rears and big tires trying to look like drag cars? No real purpose to it 
as it screwed with the handling but the young guys loved it.
Sort of the same as all of the jacked up pickups with lift kits and big 
tires. Most are never used off road and that would actually be OK, but 
they shouldn't be allowed to drive around on the streets.

Impedance mismatch?  Aux input design was a lame afterthought rather than being
correctly implemented?  Several other less likely possibilities come to mind 
too.
