2021-05-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The ML500 isn’t a bad ride if you don’t mind the clearly truck-like aspect of
it. Just driving on the interstate isn’t bad, but if the roads are dodgy
prepare for a visit to the chiropractor afterwards.

If I have to source a vehicle for a future home in Flagstaff I may very well
consider an ML. It would be ideal for the area, and stand out amongst all the
Subarus.

[MBZ] G63 v ML500 musings

2021-05-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Took a little road trip the last coupla days, was driving up north a bit
on I-95, a matte black G63 (Florida plates) was driving like a fool near
me for quite some time, speeding up, slowing down, passing me, me
passing it, blocking left lane, etc etc. Anyway, I got a chance to take
a good look at it in various poses.  I was driving the 05ML500 so was
able to kinda compare the two vehicles.  The G was a bit bigger than the
ML but the more I looked at it the uglier it was.  It basically looked
like a short shoe box with protruding wheels and big plastic fender
flares over them.  Was not particularly aesthetically pleasing.  The ML
is a better looking vehicle and for most off-road situations is probably
about as good.  I wouldn't turn one down but no strong desire to ever
have one except for maybe some fun off-roading etc.  I saw some GLs too
and those are nice-looking vehicles, good proportions.  A bit larger
than I would need these days but I wouldn't mind having one.

It also made me wonder why someone would spend $200k on a vehicle and
not use simple features like cruise control.  And it probably has the
fancy nanny version that keeps you in your lane and measures what's
ahead etc. and will take care of most tasks in that regard.

The ML did OK on the road, got around 18mpg cruising 70-80 which I guess
is OK.  It is noisier and stiffer than the 211 05E320 wagon but the seat
space is a bit roomier so I liked that.  I had driven that E320 up there
once before and that was pleasant enough but tighter for me to move
around a bit on longer drives.  The engine has great torque and
acceleration 60-80 is quite satisfying.  I'd give it a B+

2021-05-31 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My '98 Jetta was super sensitive to getting the wheels on just right, if they
weren't all the way in when you tightened the lugs the wouldn't get really
tight and would work loose again. The car would shake terribly as they
loosened, it would get pretty frightening on the highway.
Worst time it happened it was really cold out and the trunk had frozen shut so
I couldn't get to the lug wrench to tighten them. I had to run the heat on high
for 20 minutes and get the cabin sweltering hot to get the trunk to release.
