Re: [MBZ] Cognitive Dissonance Much?
My attempt at "doing the math:" solar radiation at noon on a clear day is, from what I can tell, about 1KW/m^2. How many square meters on a car roof? Maybe two or a little more? Photovoltaic cells are 20% efficient at best. So you have 400-450 Watts to work with at noon, less before and after. That will impart some charge to the battery, but even in an 8 hour workday it won't be enough to put back what you used driving to work. Re: [MBZ] Cognitive Dissonance Much?
IMO, electric cars are neither good nor bad. But they are what they are. They may not be what you think they are, or what you imagine them to be. They do not reduce CO2 emissions per mile unless your power source is hydroelectric (or nuclear or geothermal). They don't reduce net energy consumption and a practical infrastructure doesn't exist (it's like in the old days when you had to buy gasoline at a drug store). "Refueling" time will be unacceptable or range limited (take your pick). Finally, the environmental impact of large-scale production is not well understood. -Original Message- From: Mercedes On Behalf Of Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2022 11:18 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Dimitri Seretakis Subject: Re: [MBZ] Cognitive Dissonance Much? Re: [MBZ] 722.9 4matic transfer case rebuild surprisingly easy
The problem with Mercedes automatics is that, unlike earlier domestic ones, they usually have some incredible amount of mileage on them before they require work. My 300D has gotten flaky, first time i’ve had issues with a Benz auto, and it has at least 400K miles on it. That means that it’s not a matter of replacing seals and clutch packs — typically the thrust washers on the planetary gears are worn out, support bearings need to be replaced, and the check balls are all worn out. I remember a number of 20 plus for those check balls, and most of them are different sizes. And often the gear sets are getting badly worn by then too. Domestic boxes hardly every get than much mileage. Cost my brother $1500 to have the one in the SDL redone when it started slipping — rebuilt torque converter, new clutches, new thrust washers, and a new pump. Not as easy as a Torqueflight or Ford C6. Some special measuring tools needed for the planetary sets. > On Jan 25, 2022, at 5:39 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > I’ve done it, but again, it was on domestic boxes (PowerGlide, THMs, C4s, > etc.) and some years ago, but in all honesty it’s not that difficult if > you’ve got a clean place to work and some good quality snap ring pliers and > compressed air. Re: [MBZ] 722.9 4matic transfer case rebuild surprisingly easy
I’ve done it, but again, it was on domestic boxes (PowerGlide, THMs, C4s, etc.) and some years ago, but in all honesty it’s not that difficult if you’ve got a clean place to work and some good quality snap ring pliers and compressed air. Heck, with the resources on the Interwebs these days it’s got to be a heck of a lot easier. And yes, there are a lot of third party places selling parts for them, although I would make sure I get stuff like seals from Mercedes or a reputable supplier. -D > On Jan 25, 2022, at 5:27 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > I was thinking he might be a resource for your car. [MBZ] Picked up the copart ML
Strapped it down to the trailer in 18 degree Nebraska temps. No telling how long it was sitting but battery had just enough charge to turn it over and it started. Runs fine. Beyond that don’t know anything yet. I do know it’s missing the right read door panel for some reason. Will need that and of course a factory hitch. Re: [MBZ] Cognitive Dissonance Much?
That woman appears to be a fnidiot but not unexpectedly so, Kollyfawnya is full of them. I see a lot of Teslas around here, they are quite stylish rides for the sedans (those SUV things are fugly) but I'm guessing for most people who own them they are 1) transportation appliances and 2) appeal to some sort of feeelings about goodness and light and all that. I doubt if the Kiawhites I see driving them will be using them for hurricane evacuations, and that has made me think about all that saltwater storm surge letting loose all those electrons in a flash if they abandon them. Lots of kindling for their big houses (which, BTW, the fire department basically will watch burn as with hardi-plank siding, metal roofs, and hurricane-proof windows, they are basically impossible to breech to get at an interior fire). I have seen one with a license plate surround that says ZERO EMISSIONS VEHICLE and I want to smack the guy driving it, but I doubt if that would knock any sense into his head. Maybe he has a solar panel on his roof to charge it, that would be OK I guess but I don't think the luxury gated resort lifestyle beach golf/tennis community allows them. So there's that. I don't have anything personally against an electric car, not my cuppa but I'm sure they appeal to quite a few and that is their choice. I think a plug-in hybrid is a much better option as you get the convenience of petrol (diesel might be better?) for long trips, and still quite decent fuel economy and performance if you want it. I thought I saw something the other day that said new Pioi were PIHs but maybe I misread. I don't know what MB's plans are in that regard. --FT On 1/25/22 12:12 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: Unfortunately the insipid car experience is what the masses mostly want. Re: [MBZ] Everyone Needs a Shooting Brake in Their Life
That's pretty cool, would be a fun car if you had $5k to spend on a toy. I watched Harry's drive in the Lotus Elan Sprint the other night, it is surprising how much room there is in this tiny car. he is 6'2" and says he fits very well with the seat on the forward notch, if you are taller it can go back a notch to accommodate a taller driver. And the car weighs nothing and is quite fast. He had another one he did performance improvements on for the track, that thing looked fast as hell but it rode very hard. A friend had one back years ago he had pretty much dismantled and was restoring to race, I should find out what he ever did with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeYvA-bXH_w --FT On 1/25/22 11:32 AM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: Heh. Re: [MBZ] Cognitive Dissonance Much?
I agree. The mechanical nature of a car is part of the joy of driving it. Fuel burning, gears turning, the noise, the vibrations, it's all part of the experience. EVs are just big golf carts. Leno has a few steam cars. A steam engine produces torque from standstill like an electric engine. I think driving one of those might be fun, though clearly not very practical for most people.
