I don’t know specifically where it might be on your car but on 210s and 163s
the TCM is under the steering wheel above the under dash panel. You might ask
in Benzworld or do a net search.

Re: [MBZ] Lary T. Mini split

2022-02-19 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Hey ya'll,
I was reviewing my emails nd found I had been negligent in thanking all
who replied to my questions about MInisplits!  The knowledge of this
list knows no bounds!

Next, I see questions abut the 722.6 tranny like the one in my 06
E350AWD - I worked through all the suggested fixed for mine being stuck
in limp mode - R'd the Conductor plate and ATF, replaced the electr
plug and it's o-rings and got to the TCR (Trans Control Module).  I
checked everywhere I could think of and came up with a location of the
passenger foot well.  I removed the panel over the passenger's feet and
all I found was a courtesy light.  I check with Sun Valley and was told
the same location so it still sits in the driveway as a paper weight -
which it's very good at! ;-)

I know there are some E350's with the 722.6 on this list -- if anyone
finds their TCM, please let me know.  I asked the local dealer how they
T'Shoot the Tran's on mid 2000 MB's, and he said we don't;.  If they
have a problem, they replace the Tranny at around $8K.  I don't see that
as an economically practical solution!//

Anyway, have been unable to find a decent replacement for our 91 300D
2.5T that fits our budget and other needs. Plus,  while doing the Trans
work I tore my rotator cuff making me even less able to do any sweat
equity work.    But I am still hoping to find a decent W124 Diesel someday

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years?  I am sure ya'll
are as happy as I am with Pres Bidens stellar performance??  Have a
great Spring and enjoy the coming Summer!

Take care -
Larry

> Meter is connected between b terminal on starter and positive on battery via
> a brand new pair of jumper cables. Meter is set on the 20 scale I believe.
> Is that correct?

Yes. There's no way the 'welding cable' should have even a
measurable drop across it when it's not cranking. Losing more
than a volt, when the battery's considered usable down to 10V,
while cranking is unforgivable.

So, something is wrong. What is the battery voltage while cranking?
What is the current drawn from the battery while cranking?

It's bog-simple. What's the battery supplying, voltage and current?
What percentage of that voltage is the starter seeing, versus being
lost to power leaks along the way. If I'm pouring 4kW (say) out of
the battery, how much is being used to turn over the engine, and how
much is being used to heat things that should stay cold?

Re: [MBZ] OT gas water heater, pilot won't stay lit

2022-02-19 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Finding a lot of references that Rheem gas valves have an overtemp safety fuse
that cuts off the thermocouple circuit. The problem is this safety device is
often defective.

It can be bypassed, losing the protection of the device. However the tank still
has a pressure relief valve, so I'm not sure there's a real risk in doing so.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kOGhJwQTl8

Will try this tomorrow and probably leave it bypassed. Water heater was made in
2020 so is still under warranty, Rheem will send out a new valve but apparently
they are currently overwhelmed with claims.

When its warmer outside it still cranks slow, but when it drops below
40, closer to 30, it usually will not turn over fast enough to start,
but on the 2nd start attempt it lights off.  It currently has 15W40 in
it but I am going to be switching it to either 5W40 or 10W40 diesel
oil.  It might make a difference but it still turns over too slow.
Battery is brand new.

Did I have the range set correctly on my meter, or did you notice on that
video? When I turned the key on it jumped up to around .5 volts and settled
down to .12 BEFORE I started cranking. Should it show any voltage before the
cranking starts? When cranking it shows 1.2-1.5 volts.

The ground cable I am taking about is the short ground strap or whatever that

Tomorrow I will try a jumper cable from the battery to the b terminal and see
what happens. If this voltage drop is accurate and this high, could it be a
dirty connection at the starter? I can't see it at all, I have been doing this
all by feel. I did go to HF today and bought one of those inspection cameras
so I can get a look at it. Tomorrow will probably remove the connections and
see if they need to be cleaned up. Same with that one on the back of the
alternator.

Sounds unacceptable to me.

If this is just while sitting, something else is drastically wrong.
Have you tried using your jumper cables to tie battery + to the big
terminal on the starter? Bypass what should be perfect heavy cabling,
using temporary heavy cabling. Any difference then?

People tend to think of wires as perfect. They are not, they ALL are resistors.
Just, we hope, very small ones. Measuring the voltage across a wire
under load will show the imperfection. It should not be much.

What 'ground' cable between the solenoid and the starter?

The schematic of the heavy-current starter circuit is dirt-simple:

 ++
 ||
--- Bat-  ==  Star-
---   tery  ==  ter
 ||
 ++

Ideally you are measuring the voltage between the two '+' symbols on
the top, and also between the two '+' symbols on the bottom.
Neither should show any significant voltage while starting. If the
wires were perfect, they would read zero.

that correct?

On 2/19/2022 9:25 PM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote:

Video?

When I turned the key on it jumped up to around .5 volts and settled down to
.12 BEFORE I started cranking.

Then you're not measuring what we're talking about. Somehow. There should be
no voltage
between the ends of a wire unless there is a crap-ton of current flowing
through it. In the case
of the starter, some 300-400A.

If you have an auto-ranging meter it'll jump ranges on you. A .12 reading is
NOT 1.2 _volts_
unless the scale says it is. My Fluke will do this. Read it carefully, or
else lock it into the
integral volts range before taking the reading.

The ground cable I am talking about is the short ground strap or whatever that
comes off the solenoid to the body/back of the starter.

The only MB starters I'm familiar with have two fat terminals on them, and one
little one.
One big terminal goes to the battery, and the other is the starter motor. The
integral solenoid/relay
actuates a big contact switch between them. The case of the starter is the
negative terminal,
there are no other 'grounds'. A braided copper cable, for example, is not a
ground, though
they are often used for such.

This crap is easy enough to diagnose, but ONLY if you can get access to all the
terminals.
And you have the right tools. And you know how to use them.

Then you're not measuring what we're talking about. Somehow. There should be
no voltage
between the ends of a wire unless there is a crap-ton of current flowing
through it. In the case
of the starter, some 300-400A.

If you have an auto-ranging meter it'll jump ranges on you. A .12 reading is
NOT 1.2 _volts_
unless the scale says it is. My Fluke will do this. Read it carefully, or
else lock it into the
integral volts range before taking the reading.

> The ground cable I am talking about is the short ground strap or whatever
> that comes off the solenoid to the body/back of the starter.

[MBZ] OT gas water heater, pilot won't stay lit

2022-02-19 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Was at oldest son's house today trying to help with his water heater. It has a
pilot light and it won't stay lit. I suspected the thermocouple was the
problem, went to Lowes and bought one of their generic replacements for $10.
Installed, and the problem is unchanged.

So for $10 I guess there's some chance the new thermocouple was bad out of the
box. But how likely is that? Can they be tested with a voltmeter?

The only other possibility that I can think of is that the gas valve unit
itself is bad, and it's not sensing the signal from the thermocouple.

Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?

2022-02-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Did I have the range set correctly on my meter, or did you notice on
that video?  When I turned the key on it jumped up to around .5 volts
and settled down to .12 BEFORE I started cranking.  Should it show any
voltage before the cranking starts?  When cranking it shows 1.2-1.5 volts.

The ground cable I am taking about is the short ground strap or whatever
that comes off the solenoid to the body/back of the starter.

Tomorrow I will try a jumper cable from the battery to the b terminal
and see what happens.  If this voltage drop is accurate and this high,
could it be a dirty connection at the starter?  I can't see it at all, I
have been doing this all by feel.  I did go to HF today and bought one
of those inspection cameras so I can get a look at it.  Tomorrow will
probably remove the connections and see if they need to be cleaned up.
Same with that one on the back of the alternator.

Sounds unacceptable to me.

If this is just while sitting, something else is drastically wrong. Have you
tried using your jumper cables to tie battery + to the big terminal on the
starter? Bypass what should be perfect heavy cabling, using temporary
heavy cabling. Any difference then?

People tend to think of wires as perfect. They are not, they ALL are resistors.
Just, we hope, very small ones. Measuring the voltage across a wire under
load will show the imperfection. It should not be much.

What 'ground' cable between the solenoid and the starter?

The schematic of the heavy-current starter circuit is dirt-simple:

It “could” but doesn’t necessarily have plastic oiler tubes.

These supply oil to the top end of the engine through the heads, and the stock
tubes were plastic with a plug in one end. As they age, the cap on the end will
fall out, and as a result the oil just drains into the top of the head and down
the drain hole to the crankcase. It also causes lower oil volume/pressure at
idle, which often causes the lifters to “tick”.

They can also tick if the oil being used is inadequate. 1,000 miles with some
M1 usually clears it up, if that’s the case.

[MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?

2022-02-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
This is the 2008 GL320 that turns over slow. I hooked the negative of the meter
to the b terminal at the starter. The battery is under the seat so I used a
brand new pair of jumper cables, connected to the positive on the battery with
positive of meter to other end of jumper cable. In video it still turns over
too slow but not as slow as it does when sitting all night. I was able to get
to the top of the starter by removing the air box then removing the top motor
mount bolt and head shield. Not an easy job.

https://youtube.com/shorts/DxXrEAIJl6g?feature=share

It appears the cable off the starter runs to a stud on the back of the
alternator? From there it goes to the connection at the jump post then to the
battery. After the test in the video moved lead to the connection on the back
of the alternator with about the same results, then to the connections at the
jumper post which was not as high but still about .9 iirc. Should there be
voltage showing when the key is turned on before you start cranking? Negative
side was about the same but will say the ground cable that goes from the
solenoid to the body of the starter felt hot to the touch after that little bit
of cranking.

If this is really the voltage drop im sure not finding anything wrong. All
connections look clean.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel oil

2022-02-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The guy I bought my old TD from in Houston was a Benz mech who had to quit
because of his illness. (He was my wife’s patient). Went to visit him before he
passed and his former wife was taking care of him (nice of her) and asked me if
I wanted a barrel of like 10W30 Shell oil that was sitting in his garage that I
guess he brought there from his shop. Had a pump on it and everything. It was
nearly full but I had no place to put it much less a way to move the thing. She
was kinda disappointed I didn’t take it. I’d probably still be drawing off it
20yr later.

You are paying for the delivery of one small (relatively) load vs. a full

Re: [MBZ] Diesel oil

2022-02-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I spoke with the NAPA warehouse manager for Phoenix area about T6 15W40
supply and ordering. His information was they would not be able to get
gallons or 2.5 gallon containers for the next year. However, if I want to
buy it in 55 gallon barrels, he could get it With shipping, a 55 gallon
barrel would only cost me a little over $2,000.
So, it looks like the factory supply chain has adjusted their supply to
only support large truck fleets, for the near future. [he speculated] The
NAPA warehouse here is a central hub that covers the whole state, so they
"buy big", he should know. $2,000 divided by 55 yields a cost per gallon of
$36.00 or $9 per quart Pricey, but on par for full synthetic oil like
T6.
Going to be an "interesting year" for the next few years, looks like.

OTOH COVID numbers are back to November levels and still falling, yesterday the
US was #5 for new cases with around 1/5 of our all time high.

This should lead to increased staffing at places like ports and for trucking

We'll see...

the soot from the intake ports. I will be trying to clean intake manifolds
as well as the EGR assembly at the front of the engine after the
intercooler. The mixture of oil from the PCV valve and exhaust is a very
messy mix. Once the cleaning is complete, I will start putting things back
together. I have tried to put as many of the fasteners as I can back into
the same holes so I have them in their correct location.
