I don’t know specifically where it might be on your car but on 210s and 163s the TCM is under the steering wheel above the under dash panel. Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?
> Meter is connected between b terminal on starter and positive on battery via > a brand new pair of jumper cables. Meter is set on the 20 scale I believe. > Is that correct? Yes. There's no way the 'welding cable' should have even a measurable drop across it when it's not cranking. Losing more than a volt, when the battery's considered usable down to 10V, while cranking is unforgivable. So, something is wrong. What is the battery voltage while cranking? What is the current drawn from the battery while cranking? It's bog-simple. What's the battery supplying, voltage and current? What percentage of that voltage is the starter seeing, versus being lost to power leaks along the way. If I'm pouring 4kW (say) out of the battery, how much is being used to turn over the engine, and how much is being used to heat things that should stay cold? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT gas water heater, pilot won't stay lit
Finding a lot of references that Rheem gas valves have an overtemp safety fuse that cuts off the thermocouple circuit. The problem is this safety device is often defective. It can be bypassed, losing the protection of the device. However the tank still has a pressure relief valve, so I'm not sure there's a real risk in doing so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kOGhJwQTl8 Will try this tomorrow and probably leave it bypassed. Water heater was made in 2020 so is still under warranty, Rheem will send out a new valve but apparently they are currently overwhelmed with claims. When its warmer outside it still cranks slow, but when it drops below 40, closer to 30, it usually will not turn over fast enough to start, but on the 2nd start attempt it lights off. It currently has 15W40 in it but I am going to be switching it to either 5W40 or 10W40 diesel oil. It might make a difference but it still turns over too slow. Battery is brand new. There should be no voltage between the ends of a wire unless there is a crap-ton of current flowing through it. In the case of the starter, some 300-400A. If you have an auto-ranging meter it'll jump ranges on you. A .12 reading is NOT 1.2 _volts_ unless the scale says it is. My Fluke will do this. Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?
Did I have the range set correctly on my meter, or did you notice on that video? When I turned the key on it jumped up to around .5 volts and settled down to .12 BEFORE I started cranking. Should it show any voltage before the cranking starts? When cranking it shows 1.2-1.5 volts. The ground cable I am taking about is the short ground strap or whatever that comes off the solenoid to the body/back of the starter. Tomorrow I will try a jumper cable from the battery to the b terminal and see what happens. If this voltage drop is accurate and this high, could it be a dirty connection at the starter? I can't see it at all, I have been doing this all by feel. I did go to HF today and bought one of those inspection cameras so I can get a look at it. Tomorrow will probably remove the connections and see if they need to be cleaned up. Same with that one on the back of the alternator. Re: [MBZ] 1996 SL500 - 198k miles - $5,000
It “could” but doesn’t necessarily have plastic oiler tubes. These supply oil to the top end of the engine through the heads, and the stock tubes were plastic with a plug in one end. As they age, the cap on the end will fall out, and as a result the oil just drains into the top of the head and down the drain hole to the crankcase. It also causes lower oil volume/pressure at idle, which often causes the lifters to “tick”. They can also tick if the oil being used is inadequate. 1,000 miles with some M1 usually clears it up, if that’s the case. -D From: Mercedes on behalf of Allan Streib via Mercedes Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2022 1:28 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Allan Streib Subject: [MBZ] 1996 SL500 - 198k miles - $5,000 "M119 engine has typical tick but runs perfectly" What is this "typical tick" ?? https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/d/cincinnati-1996-mercedes-sl500/7447858241.html ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Diesel oil
The guy I bought my old TD from in Houston was a Benz mech who had to quit because of his illness. (He was my wife’s patient). Went to visit him before he passed and his former wife was taking care of him (nice of her) and asked me if I wanted a barrel of like 10W30 Shell oil that was sitting in his garage that I guess he brought there from his shop. Had a pump on it and everything. It was nearly full but I had no place to put it much less a way to move the thing. She was kinda disappointed I didn’t take it. I’d probably still be drawing off it 20yr later. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Feb 19, 2022, at 2:01 PM, G Mann via Mercedes > wrote: > > I think when you step up into the 55 gallon barrel crowd, the definition of > "bulk" becomes huge multiples of 55 gallon barrels.. like a train car load. > Then you are elevated into the "bulk buyer discount realm "... > I do not qualify for that as a bottom feeder, only one barrel shipment. > >> On Sat, Feb 19, 2022 at 10:51 AM Allan Streib via Mercedes < >> mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: >> >> Yeah $9/qt is about normal retail price. I think when you step up into the 55 gallon barrel crowd, the definition of "bulk" becomes huge multiples of 55 gallon barrels.. like a train car load. Re: [MBZ] Diesel oil
I spoke with the NAPA warehouse manager for Phoenix area about T6 15W40 supply and ordering. His information was they would not be able to get gallons or 2.5 gallon containers for the next year. However, if I want to buy it in 55 gallon barrels, he could get it With shipping, a 55 gallon barrel would only cost me a little over $2,000. So, it looks like the factory supply chain has adjusted their supply to only support large truck fleets, for the near future. [he speculated] The NAPA warehouse here is a central hub that covers the whole state, so they "buy big", he should know. $2,000 divided by 55 yields a cost per gallon of $36.00 or $9 per quart Pricey, but on par for full synthetic oil like T6. Going to be an "interesting year" for the next few years, looks like. On Fri, Feb 18, 2022 at 5:01 PM Rick Knoble via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Hmm.
