Re: [MBZ] I found a new toy for OK Don

2022-05-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
When you need 800 to say 1500 feet at sea level, 8000 is a lot of runway,
even at 7000 ft. I flew into Los Alamos once in a C172 - interesting
airport - one way in, the other way out - the mountain was too high on the
west side to climb over on departure. I was also surprised at all the 65 -
85 HP NA aircraft parked there - Cubs, Champs, and Ercoupe, etc. 6000 feet
of runway seemed fine for those old low powered aircraft.

Re: [MBZ] I found a new toy for OK Don

2022-05-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Increase in altitude = decrease in air density
Mother nature always wins in aviation.
Less air density instantly translates to less lift with fewer air molecules
to react against the wing surface, or the propeller blades. Engines produce
less horsepower as density altitude provides less air to expand on each
power stroke. Suck, Squeeze, Bang, and Blow becomes Suck, Wheeze, little
bang, less blow.
In the fling wing world, you go critical even faster, since the total
reactive area of each blade is smaller, relative to the lift loading per
sq. inch.
The really good news is, at high altitude, you have less drag in the thin
air, so, your time to scream "Ohh God!!! we are gonna die". is reduced
because you can fall faster with not enough lift in thin air.

I look at all the NA aircraft at the FBO here and wonder how many have a tough
time getting out in the summer. Of course, the runway is 8800 feet which likely
helps some.

You know it’s an issue when there are lighted electronic signboards at the
taxiways to the runway with the current density altitude.

Lots and lots of military operations here. Helicopters and fixed wing aircraft,
both doing touch and gos and working out of the field.

Now that he's bigger you can buy him that helicopter. Should have no
trouble making it fly, or at least bounce.

Re: [MBZ] I found a new toy for OK Don

2022-05-02 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Oh my gosh, we had one of those for our youngest. Hung it in a doorway and let
him go!

He would jump for hours in that thing. It would get quiet and you would look
over to see him fast asleep in it, leaning over to one side.

It was in the doorway between the kitchen and laundry room, where the cat’s
litter box was located. The cat would want to get to his box, but the youngster
would be in his Johnny jump up bouncing around, making passage difficult.

The cat would sit their for several minutes, judging the physics of the boy’s
movements, then finally dart through on one side or another.

Hee. Good memories.

I got to sit in the F101 cockpit simulator in the early 70's while my Dad

connected to a bank of 60's computing tech, but I suspect it was largely analog

Several large cabinets looming is what I remember. We were on-base with my

Looks pretty nice if you’re into 220s. Not sure how a 350 would move it around
though.

Re: [MBZ] OT - B-52 Flight Simulator Trains

2022-05-02 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
That’s really interesting. No idea such things existed. One of my NASA Langley
summer internships was in the flight simulation group. We had a 737 electronic
cockpit simulator driven by CDC 6000 and 7000-series computers and the actual
737 aircraft (called the Terminal-Configured Vehicle) had an identical
electronic cockpit in the passenger section where test pilots could actually
fly the plane, with safety pilots in the actual cockpit up front. It was the
precursor to the electronic cockpits of recent times. This was 1975 I think.

The next summer 76 I was in the flight test group and flew on the plane a few
times, all flight test data were recorded for later analysis. There was one
problem where the plane kept landing hard in auto-land. It used radar altimeter
data to compute flight path and commands to land the aircraft. (There was some
sort of computer in the airplane too). I kept seeing this weird blip a second
or two before landing that showed the plane’s altitude rising about 15ft just
before touchdown which then caused the autopilot to command nose-down, then the
altitude would drop fast , too fast for the autopilot to get some altitude and
the plane would slam down. So one day I went out and walked the runway and
found there was a big drainage ditch just across the end of the runway and it
was about 15ft deep! So we modified the algorithms and incorporated the baro
altimeter signal a bit more and smoothed out the radar signal input and all was
good!

Another time I found the pilot control inputs to be the problem when in manual
mode, they were reacting to the same thing. I made the mistake of pointing this
out in a post-flight meeting (you could see the yoke inputs doing exactly the
same as the autopilot), and that got a significant reaction from the pilots who
thought mostly with their little brains. I was right, but learned one never
criticizes the pilots. But I was kinda cocky and 20yo and knew everything too,
so we reached a mutual situation.

I never crashed the 737 sim but I did crash a fighter sim a few times. And did
pretty well in a helicopter sim which surprised me as I knew nothing about
helos except the flight test machines kept breaking all the time. They were
worse than old (or new!) Benzes.
