Re: [MBZ] Car Disposal?
I don’t know about Florida but here if a vehicle sits for 30days (“abandoned”) the yard or mechanic can file a lien and then has to auction it off. I’m not sure how the title sorts out but I think the yard gets it from the state, or the buyer gets it somehow. In any case the auction sale lets them recover something. The original owner is out of it at that point. If the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably easiest to just walk away from it and let it be the yard’s problem. --FT Sent from iFōn > On Jun 8, 2022, at 9:34 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > Interesting discussion with a neighbor today that I thought might elicit > some responses here that could be of value…. > > Seems his college aged school son totaled his (the son’s) little pickup > truck, a 2010-2012 Ford of some sort. Re: [MBZ] Car Disposal?
Have you priced 2010-2011 Ford Rangers lately? Depending on the severity of the damages, someone will pick it up at auction and make a handsome profit. Negotiate with the yard, bring the title and say "here you go". Hopefully they will take it and be satisfied. If not, lawyers get involved and things get ugly And expensive. See "Lincoln Park Towing" in Chicago. Steve Goodman even made a song about them. https://youtu.be/dE5HtTxxJRM https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Towing_Service Rick From: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: June 8, 2022 8:34 PM To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Reply-to: mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: d...@penoff.com Subject: [MBZ] Car Disposal? Seems his college aged school son totaled his (the son’s) little pickup truck, a 2010-2012 Ford of some sort. Because of the minimal value and limited resources of the son, who works in the summer to pay his bills, the truck had no collision or comp coverage, so it’s essentially a write-off for him. Sheriff had the truck towed to an impound lot from the crash site. Three days in (this apparently happened sometime on Monday) the fees at the impound lot are already something crazy, like $650, and of course increasing exponentially every day. The son has no interest in the remains of the vehicle, and certainly doesn’t have the resources to cover the impound fees. I’m assuming he would even have to pay to have the wreck hauled off to someplace like CoPart or LKQ, if they would even want it. So the neighbor’s wondering (he’s asking me, because he knows I’m a “car guy") if I think the impound place, a private towing firm contracted to the County for such services, would just take the title to the truck in lieu of the fees. I’m thinking that the scrap value of the truck is probably minimal, so even if he did this they would still want the balance of the fees they’ve charged to-date. I presume they could take a lien on the truck/title, but even if they did that it’s still more or less worthless and they won’t get jack out of the kid, who has reached the age of majority and is not on anything connected to the parents as far as I know. Let’s also realize that these places charge exorbitant fees as a way to rip people off, of course, and I have to believe there are plenty of instances where they don’t get a dime. Basically yes, but doesn’t really matter if he gives them the title or not. If the car was worth something and he offered the title, they might actually pay him something for it but if not, it’s not worth bothering with. Re: [MBZ] Novavax COVID
It’s the old fashioned type of vaccine, and should work pretty well. Supposed to give nearly as much immunity as the mRNA vaccines, and it should have less side effects. If you don’t think you can take the mRNA vaccines I’d definitely get the NovaVax. I’m fully vaccinated at the moment, and will probably get the dual action booster from Pfizer when it’s available in August. Re: [MBZ] Car Disposal?
If he doesn’t want the truck, he doesn’t need to do anything. The tow company will “auction” it off to themselves then put it out back for parts, or sell it to a salvage yard. He won’t need to pay them anything. Around here a lot of the tow companies are also salvage yards. Re: [MBZ] Car Disposal?
Thanks, Grant. In this situation I don’t think the neighbor has the slightest clue as to how to recover it, nor would he want it. I’m wondering if a place like LKQ would have an interest, and if they did, would they haul it off? Or should he go there with the title in hand, say, “I’ll give you $200 and the title” and walk away, for example? -D > On Jun 8, 2022, at 9:44 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: > > Key word: Negotiation > I have had some experience with tow yards and the universal rip off they > enjoy. > Along with those contacts, in each case, if you park any emotions and just > stick to hard ball negotiation, I have had good success in getting fees > beat to rock bottom, however, go prepared to do one of two things, Smile, > say "thanks just the same" & Walk away, or, pull cash out on the spot and > be prepared to take the vehicle right on the spot. > ie... Key word: Negotiation I have had some experience with tow yards and the universal rip off they enjoy. Along with those contacts, in each case, if you park any emotions and just stick to hard ball negotiation, I have had good success in getting fees beat to rock bottom, however, go prepared to do one of two things, Smile, say "thanks just the same" & Walk away, or, pull cash out on the spot and be prepared to take the vehicle right on the spot. ie... [MBZ] Car Disposal?
Interesting discussion with a neighbor today that I thought might elicit some responses here that could be of value…. Anyone encounter a situation like this, or know of one or a resolution for it? -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Maybe, you should go over and introduce him to classic old Mercedes? He could class up the junkyard a bit if he collected MBs instead of Altimas.
