Crazy price. Working AC is a plus but with any rust that price is very
unrealistic IMO.

Re: [MBZ] Stupid home AC

2022-07-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If the humidity level is high, it will cool slowly until enough water has
condensed out of the air. Condensing the water vapor in the air releases a lot
of heat (phase change) that has to be pumped out before you'll really start
cooling the air.

This one might still have something going on, not sure.  It was around
105 today, house was 86 when I got home.  It has been running for about
2.5 hours and temp is only down to 82 at the moment. It is still 92
outside.  I would have thought it would cool down the house faster than
that, but maybe not after being heat soaked for a week.

The setting of the thermostat makes no difference. The AC is either running or
not. If it's running, and working properly, the evaporator will be cold but not

If it's freezing up, it needs a charge, and whatever is leaking needs to be

[MBZ] Driving the CL500

2022-07-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Drove it around today, it's running great and AC BLOWS ICE COLD which is
important as it was 91F or so today and in a black car...  It is really
comfortable and has a solid feel, quite roomy, the seats are very
comfortable, good visibility all around.

Had it out in the sun and WOW the paint looks fantastic after finishing
the polishing, very glassy and deep.  I had it all nice and clean but
then it sprinkled for about 30sec while I was driving and got it all
spotted, but even so...  it is a beautiful car, the design is one of the
best from MB (IMHO).

The ABC suspension is kinda funky, it works fine but wants to squat down
on RF after being parked awhile, the red light on the instrument panel
is screaming, I hit the raise position 1 and it pops right up, then I
drop it to normal and it is fine.  I think it might be a sensor, I need
to investigate where that might be, I hope it is not built into the
strut.  I did a couple circuits of a roundabout at a fairly vigorous
pace and it is kinda surreal that the car does not lean at all, and
feels really solid in the turns, steering is very tight.  For a big
heavy car it does not feel like it at all.  I guess that is what ABC is
all about.  It would be fun to use the roundabout as a skid pad and see
how fast... even in the normal setting it is tight but comfortable, I
will have to give the Sport setting a try.

I think it might be a pig on fuel, not enough miles and time to
calibrate mpg but the best the display was showing 15mpg the last I
checked it.  I did not push it a lot, but a big V8 needs to be exercised!

I also need to get it up and look at the exhaust system, it is kinda
growly and I wonder if some previous owner might have deleted something
or put on some cherry bombs or something.  It sounds good though, a
little growl but not loud.

So far a very satisfying project for very little investment (some time
and 2 fuses!).

So the 300SD and 450SEL are both W116s?

They have:

TRAKMOTIVE MB8003 {MB-8003} Does Not Include ABS Ring Info
$43.79

FVP MB8003 {MB-8003} Info
$44.79

GSP NCV48998 Info
$65.79

CARDONE 669022 {1233500410} Info
Fits Rear Left; with 24-13/16" Overall Length
or Rear Right; with 24-13/16" Overall Length
Out of Stock

And there is a fellow on eBay who rebuilds them for $259.

I’m not sure, I know it was running and proper temp was being maintained then
about an hour later I noticed it was getting warm in the house and the
compressor was not running. We shall see if it shuts off again. Btw even though
it’s running the defrost board is still flash the coil sensor error. I suspect
maybe it means nothing since it’s in AC mode.

in the diff you had to remove (older cars) or the later bolt on 126 style.

Re: [MBZ] W116 Half-Shafts

Based on the EPC, it looks like the correct half shaft for Craig’s car
(116.120) is a 126-350-64-10, which surprisingly, still comes up in RevParts
for around $360.00. I question whether it’s still available because it doesn’t
come up in the Classic Center parts search, but it looks like they crossed a
bunch of different ones over to a single part number in the past, so who knows?

Kaleb's 450SEL (116.036) shows the supersession to the same part number, so
using that logic, the Rock Auto part should be the same.

Re: [MBZ] Stupid home AC

2022-07-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Did it freeze up and finally thawed out after sitting and not running?

I lived in Newport News VA one summer in an apartment and the manager
told us when we moved in not to set it below like 76 on hot days because
it would freeze up.  It did even if not set that low when we got home
from work and turned it on, and took a coupla hours to thaw out then
which was a real pain because it was hot there

If you can’t get aftermarket ones, there are some guys in Colorado who are
considered the best rebuilders in the business. If they have one on the shelf
they’ll do a swap with a core charge. They’re not cheap, but very high quality
from what I’ve heard from people I know who have used them.

The joints which are affected are the inner joints, the ones nearer the

Except this is one of those variable compressors that does not have a normal

Pretty sure you can always tell if the compressor hub is spinning, vs not.
Pistons gotta pis, so if they're moving so is fluid. If it won't build pressure
either the one-way valves or shot, or the expansion valve is so open that
no pressure is built.

At its heart, AC is extremely simple, mechanically. Worst case is a variable
displacement pump, which adds that failure point to the mix.

I have hooked SDS up and pressure does not change when compressor is supposed
to be off or on. I recall hooking up gauges and both sides stay the same but
may check that again. Either the valve in the compressor is not working as it
should or expansion valve is not. Or maybe it’s an electrical problem and if so
it’s somewhere from the plug on the compressor to the compressor itself as
there is 12 volts present at the wire on the car side.

Biodiesel is more environmentally friendly. It is carbon neutral. The biggest
issue with diesel or biodiesel is NOx emissions.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The closest thing would be thorium fueled nuclear reactors and Fischer Tropsch
process for coal. The United States could be energy independent for the next
millennium.

Someone please tell Greta.

Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes SL500 - 65k miles - $9,500

2022-07-25 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There was a woman on a FB group in eastern NC with a SLK that needed
hydraulics. Mech quoted something like $5k. She didn’t know what to do, was
looking for a mech who might know what to do. I suggested she look at top
hydraulics and talk to the shop in Chapel Hill, decide if the job was worth
outsourcing or DIY. She said her husband was moderately competent. Heard
nothing more.

It’s a shame these cars cost more to fix at a mech than it’s worth putting into
them. I was just talking to a friend today about the CL500. The PO was tired of
throwing money at it with no resolution. My grand total cost for getting it
fixed was 2 fuses and some electrons to charge the battery. I sent her a text
the other day and told her I had it on the road and it was working great, she
was very happy to know that.

Oh well, I guess more fodder for us fools. The $900E350 will get sorted soon,
the $900E500 needs a new wheel for the new tire and it will be back on the road
again. Both after POs being quoted $ks to put in new transmissions.

I once put 7 2x4x8s in a 1998 Taurus SE (no sunroof, and worse yet, back

I got lucky, having bought 7 for a small project before discovering that
8 would not have been possible to fit in the car. Took a bit of
maneuvering to get them in and out of the car. Ended up with the front
ends under the dash and the back ends above the rear shelf, diagonal
bottom right to top left.

With my folding seat 1997 Achieva, I carried 10' pipes and conduits on
occasion, but that was easy, tuck the front end under the dash, then
over the reclined passenger seat, and into the trunk. Again, quantities
limited to what would go on top of the seat and still fit under the
dash.

As I type this, my pole saw and a 7' fishing rod are in the Saturn Ion.
Since they're both skinny and I don't like a sharp saw rolling around, I
tucked them between the passenger seat and the doors.

I'm sure it depends on the engine. For a I6 Hercules you
take off the head, then remove the crankshaft, then hammer
out the pistons one at a time after having used electrolytic
rust removal to restore the cylinder bores to something resembling
smooth and round, followed by good penetrating oil, a solid
drift, and a 5# hammer.

But that was just me.

Re: [MBZ] Frozen engine

2022-07-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
First pull the plugs and insert a bore camera [now available on Amazon and
others for not a lot of money] and do a visual inspection of the actual
cylinder bores.
Quickly, you will be able to see if the bores are rusted, or some other
condition which has the engine locked up.
From that, you can make a determination of how to attack the issues you
find. Without a visual look on a V12 internals, you are likely to spend
considerable time and money doing what gives no good result.
V12 Jags have some history of overheating due to loss of coolant [small
bypass hose hidden at back of engine fails] and if you do not have the
full history of why it was parked... well... best to look inside. If
cylinders are scored instead of only rusty... an expensive rebuild..
