All they'd need:

One PIC, or other sub-$ microcontroller.  A capacitively-coupled
power supply, a couple of isolation diodes, a zener diode and a resistor,
a rechargeable coin cell suitable for CV charging, a thermistor, a beeper,
and a switch.  What do you think that would cost in Chindustrial quantities?

But at least they'll fail and take all your food with it more often.

I'm in the middle of a multi-stage bleach/ozone recovery of our garage freezer
that got unplugged by accident.  It's going well, the initial stages were...
unpleasant.

It's ridiculous that they can't spend $3 these days to put in a stock
freezer alarm, one that beeps loudly if it's unplugged, or if it goes
above freezing inside.  What's more, you can't even buy something
that does this.  You apparently have to buy _two_ somethings to
get this level of protection.

Heavier wire is better. You can get an extension cord for a travel 
trailer that is good for 30 amps so likely #10 wire. Just a guess, but I 
think if you use a heavier cord, your freezers will likely last longer.

They may have strayed from that to a site that primarily deals in high 
dollar classic cars, but personally, I would rather see cars like this

My first Benz was a 1973 280.  The reverse light didn't work but I thought
little of it.  Turns out it wasn't the bulb - it was the neutral safety
switch, which required dropping the center shaft to R/R.  Cost me $280 at
the time which is around $750 today...

That's the sort of thing I would use as leverage on the price, but
would not bother fixing. I don't really get the appeal of sunroofs
and almost never use them in my cars that have them.

One thing I forgot - check the sunroof for proper operation. For some reason I 
glossed over this when I was inspecting mine, not sure how I did it, but I 
rarely use it anyway. The gearing on mine is toast, and it’s a complete 
assembly to replace if it’s failed. The part alone is nearly $1000, and I’m 
sure the labor is at least that much since the headliner has to be removed to 
R it.

These are actually pretty stable and robust vehicles. I would agree with Floyd 
in that if there was an area I want to scrutinize it would be the transmission.

As I’m sure you know, provenance is everything, so if possible, try to 
determine how well it’s been cared for.

My 2008 ML550 has 172k, and it was dealer maintained for most (not all) of it’s 
life, and everything on is has been very solid and appears to have been well 
taken care of. Repairs that I’ve done have been mainly related to things that 
have aged and would have needed repairs anyway.

For example, the driver’s outside mirror mechanism wouldn’t allow the mirror to 
fold back properly. No doubt there was some gearing that was broken or stripped 
that I couldn’t repair, so I replace the assembly. Right side exterior mirror 
cover had a broken retaining tab, so it would rattle. I replaced it.

As you know, I’m a bit OCD about my cars, so these are certainly things that 
could be ignored.

I replaced both steering wheel telematics buttons because the icons were worn 
off.

The drivetrain is pretty straightforward as far as the 4Matic stuff - they’re 
all 4Matic, just so you know. It’s an AWD system, but a bit “smarter” than the 
previous AWD system in the W163. Still pretty basic, so not a lot there but a 
transfer case and differentials. Do note that since it has the electronic 
transmission shifting is done through a stalk on the steering column, which is 
equally cool and weird, especially if you move between vehicles that have more 
traditional shifters.

The engine is about as simple as the M112 and if it’s not one with balance 
shaft issues (it probably isn’t but check the serial #s) it’s pretty robust.

Hopefully, it’s a later 2008 so you’ve got the NTG 2.5 COMAND system. Early 
2008 models like mine have an earlier COMAND system made by Alpine, and it’s 
sort of a one-off model. Not a bad thing, but just a less common system. You 
can tell the difference by looking for an SD card slot at the top of the bezel 
- if it’s got one it’s the later model.

I LOVE my ML550. I haven’t had a car that I wanted to drive any time I had a 
chance or an excuse to do so in years. The ML550 is that car. I love driving it.

bad.  I’m supposing the engine is out of the bad range. 

Buy a scanner if you are interested in the vehicle, do a scan, see what 
historic and current codes it might have. Do a test drive and do real-time 
monitoring of engine and transmission, see that the ECU is doing ok and that 
trans temps and pressures and shifting is all working well. Other systems are 
also available for real-time monitoring but you will see if there are any 
codes.

This is complete replacement with factory materials. It’s a pig to do because 
there are so many things that are in it they have to pull all of them out, like 
speakers and such. A lot of that plastic will be brittle and break in the 
process, but I’ve got all new parts for him to use, which he likes.

I’ll leave it with him for a couple of weeks when I’m in AZ in October so he 
can do it at his leisure. His shop is slammed, so when I can leave something 
with him for a period of time and he can work on it as people are available he 
cuts me slack, too.

that’s with a shop I’ve done business with for many years that treats me well.

[MBZ] Welded up the E500 rim

I bought a new pair of tires for the front on the 04E500 as the ones on 
there were completely worn out on the inside.  I'm wondering if the 
suspension is shot or it just needs an alignment.  I bought a suspension 
rebuild kit but have not put it on yet, will check on alignment and see 
what the shop says.  It looks like a PITA to do but probably no worse 
than a 123 or 126.


Anyway, I was getting the new tires mounted a coupla months ago and the 
kid found one rim had a crack on the inside lip so wouldn't mount the 
tire, even though the old one was holding air.  Looked like a curb or 
pothole hit at some point had bent it a bit and cracked it.  I looked 
around here and there for a new wheel but none to be found around here 
so was going to get it welded.  I called around to a coupla places and 
they apparently ship them off somewhere to be done, and it was over 
$100.  These wheels are not really worth that much (well, if I can't 
find one, maybe...) so that was stupid.


Max had a guy he put me on to who was going to see about it, but I 
started my TIG welding class last week so asked my instructor if he 
could weld it for me.  He did that the other day so I took it and the 
tire to the shop to get it mounted, no problems!  My instructor had to 
cut out a fair amount of the crack then fill it with weld, he treated it 
as aluminum (some sort of alloy, who knows exactly what) and filled it 
in then ground it down to have the wheel profile.  Looked pretty good, 
he left a bit of a blob on the outside for strength.


My instructor appears to have been welding forever, he is nuke certified 
and I am sure has done work on the subs that occasionally visit as he 
was in the Navy for 11yr.  So he did a good job.  Wanted nothing for it 
but I asked him what he drank so will get a bottle of Kentucky's finest 
corn product for him.

That was a Quantum turbo. LT Don called it a rocket ship, I didn't trust the 
speedo. It was speedier than a 240D though.
The shocks were bad and none of the door locks worked. If I'd been by myself I 
would have bought it...

That could be a good deal with a bit of negotiation, looks pretty nice 
and was probably well-maintained.  Unless it kakks it would be hard to

Probably needs a new CP.  My similar 04E500 was acquired for $900.

The car needs a new voltage regulator or a brake switch. I’m not sure 
The car starts right up but the computer isn’t letting it go into gear I 
know this is a easy fix for someone that knows what there doing I just 
don’t have time.

This could be a good deal for a cheepklasse wagon, doesn't look bad, 
doesn't appear to need much to get it sorted


Mercedes for sale. The car needs to be repaired (there is a belt to be 
fixed, battery charge to be checked, a front light to be replaced). Two 
tires were replaced last year. The battery was changed in April. It has 
some minor damage but if repaired the car can run smoothly. The interior 
is in good condition and the exterior has only a few small dents. Price 
negotiable.
