My view on the matter is to stay through the event having a safe place to ride it out if it gets *really* bad (and the CAT 1s here have been scary enough) then once it passes take care of any compromising house damage if that is possible. And then to bug out if necessary. I have 30gal of gas for my generator to keep the fridge going and a few lights for a few days running it a coupla hours at a time, the fridge will stay cold/frozen for a good 6hr. The trouble here is that the power company will shut off power to keep energized lines and boxes and equipment from frying due to salt water intrusion. It will rinse out easy enough but shorted equipment is hard and expensive to replace. And in the aftermath it might take several days for crews to even get down to the end of the road. I have lots of canned and dry food to last for some time, plenty of ammo, 2-90gal hot water tanks that stay hot for 4-5 days, and the poodles to keep me company and provide backup perimeter defense. Vehicles are also full of petrol, the ML500 would be the post-event ride. Plenty of diesel for my little tractor, and mixed for the chainsaw to deal with trees. And a bike! We’ll get some rain and wind but it shouldn’t be too bad here post-landfall. I am concerned for the Poos situation though. Stay in touch and provide updates as you can. We went when overnighting there last year on the way to Flagstaff. It was underwhelming. Neither of our steaks had grille marks, which we thought was weird, it was more like they had been baked in an oven or something. When we asked why we got some flip response that made no sense. Truly a major tourist trap intended on playing up the reputation and not the quality. Yes, I am currently here as it’s right next door to my hotel and I’m beyond pissed. I walked over here at 5pm, sat here for at least 20 minutes before anyone showed up. I’m sitting at one of these big tables in the middle. I’m on one end. A guy came in about 10 minutes after me who was sat at the other end. 10 minutes after that somebody else comes in and they seat them in the middle. Still no sign of anyone. Before the hostess leaves I ask if anyone is working as I have been sitting here for 20 minutes. Finally about 10 minutes later waitress shows up. Takes the drink orders for everyone. Then starts taking orders. She gets the guy on the end, the people in the middle, then heads to a different table to take their order. I flip shit, get up, go back to the front to raise hell. Basically the worthless manager does nothing to rectify the situation other than say we will get you taken care of. Probably the last time I will be here as the last time the steaks were not all that great. The service rep at the dealership said there is a separate battery in the
Bluetec models that handles this feature ("Ecostart"), so the main battery
is unaffected. Not sure how all this extra work affects (degrades) the
starter...

We had a rental car a couple of years ago that had the auto stop and start feature. It was a Chevy Malibu if my memory serves to be correct. It was actually very seamless. I didn't realize it was doing it for a time. Stop at a light and the motor would shut off. Lift your foot off the brake and it would start and be running ready to go before I had my foot back on the gas pedal. I see no point to it and assume it would put a lot of strain on various components but I was amazed at how smooth it was. Of course, we are talking about a new vehicle with hardly any miles on it. Who knows what it would be like as it got older? When the 2016 Chevy Cruze obtained start-stop technology, it came with a beefed-up starter and a large AGM battery, along with smart charging and a current sensor in the battery cable so the car knows amp-hours in vs amp-hours out. Certain temperature parameters must be met, climate control must not be in MAX/AC or DEF settings, and battery state of charge must be high in order for it to stop the engine. And if you're waiting for a train with your foot on the brake, it restarts in 2 minutes. I just checked with GM Parts Outlet, the battery is #1 on the battery parts diagram, but they don't give a corresponding part number or price. I assume it's $200-300.
