Flying it was almost exactly on par with hand feeding a pet cobra. The engine I used produced double the design horsepower and was about 2/3 more weight than Bede designed the airplane for. The added 11 inches put it almost back in the balance envelope, but it was right on the ragged edge, which made it very dicey to handle. It was not an airplane for the novice pilot, and was easy to take beyond safe limits in seconds. Second thought, if the car has not been running for a while, all the hydraulic valve lifters could have bled down... so multiple fail to start paths in operation at once. Valves not opening. Fuel not primed to injectors. Missing run components: Suck: Collapsed lifters so not enough air to compress Squeeze: No air to compress [and make heat] plus, no fuel to ignite [injectors dry and bled down] Bang: No bang happens because of the lack of the first two. Blow: I note quite a lot of blowby when you take off the oil fill cap.. if the exhaust valves are staying closed, the spinning cylinders would pump whatever air is in the cylinders past the rings and pressurize the crankcase.. since the valves are not opening to exhaust, which I suspect is what may be happening.. In the video, it seems to spin over fast enough to make compression to start, I'd be tempted to give it a short squirt of diesel death in the intake just to help it light off enough to prime the injectors. If it's been setting for a "while" most likely it's lost prime to the injectors.. crack the lines and prime the intake with a short blast of diesel death and look for fuel coming out at each injector line.. Since it's only cranking at the underhood start switch cobbled in, it seems very likely the glow plug cycle is bypassed also. Steal a hair dryer or heat gun and preheat down the intake while you crank it a few times to warm up the cylinders then give it a blast of eather diesel death and crank it... it should light off for a short bit.. That will at least tell you if it will run.. Tank is installed back in the car. I probably should have ordered new hoses for the line out of the tank and from the pump to the supply line they do not appear to have been leaking, but they are also stiff as a board. I will see what they cost and how soon I can get them. The return lines and vent lines are dry rotted and need to be replaced but it’s just regular hose by the foot. Re: [MBZ] Owosso Trailer for Kleb
A very long time ago, I built a BD5 from the kit, which was never supplied complete, as Mr. Bede did in those days. Which meant that I made multiple trips to Newton, KS, to kick parts into existance that otherwise didn't exist since Bede had and owned the only full set of jigs and fixtures. One of the things that I did was redesign the cockpit area by adding 11 inches, which would accommodate my 6'4" body. Since Bede never supplied an engine that would work, I designed / modified a Honda Civic engine with gear reduction to drive the prop, and flew the airplane with good success. Bede and I had a love / hate relationship because I had "redesigned his airplane" and made it work... which it did. It was wicked fast, had the flight personality of a run over rattlesnake, and always drew way more attention than I wanted. I sold it after about 200 hrs of flight and a 1,000 hrs of "fixing" to a guy that promptly destroyed it and himself... case closed... Anyway, as someone here stated, the cycle looks very much like the Bede aircraft, only it has 2 sets and is about as crash worthy... [ie, one mistake and you die]. A Benze it is not. [MBZ] Dreamer -- 1983 Mercedes 240D running Engine,$700
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/8256241137783385 Mileage on the engine is unknown. It starts up right away. Idles and accelerates fine. It looks as thou the engine may have a few hundred thousand on it. But the way it's running some mechanical work could of been done during its lifetime also. The engine will come complete with it's mechanical accessories. Like power steering pump, alternator, starter and a/c compressor. These alone are several hundreds of dollars. Things that are not attached to the motor do not come. They are things like the radiator, oil cooler, a/c condenser and battery. The are for sale separately. Local pickup only. Engine will be removed prior to pick up. -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
