[MBZ] $400E500 short shakedown
Aired up the tires (decent Cooper tires with good tread) properly, put a couple gallons of gas ⛽️ in since the gauge is not working and decided to give the car a brief shakedown drive. Driveway and down the road a bit so only about 1.5 miles. Engine runs mostly fine. Brakes w ere all rusty as expected but worked fine. Has vibration/grinding sound and feel on acceleration, I’m thinking engine/trans mounts and flex disks so will need to get under the car and check that all out. Maybe the rusty brake disks too? I felt a coupla pads, seemed OK. Or the old gas? Probably should change transmission fluid too, 190kmi who knows what’s it’s like but the transmission shifted OK. Cruised ok no drama. Air suspension pumps up and down so that’s good it’s all working. Steering felt tight but maybe a bit stiff. Might need a fluid change. No real rattles from the suspension so that’s good, it feels tight. No leaks from the hose repair and no magic smoke from the wiring repairs. I had vacuumed it out last week but haven’t really cleaned the interior, it still looks pretty good and no bad aromas. Car is not bad at all aside from the paint and these (I hope) kinda car-sitting-for-awhile issues. If I get it running well and painted I might have to keep it for awhile or Kaleb will come get it. Re: [MBZ] How to get these crimp? connectors off?
Yeah it’s pretty short run and it has the two bends to fit around behind the aux battery tray that fits in that well . I thought about using some heater hose but I think the hose would have kinked and pinched off at either or both of the bends. Maybe it would have worked. The used assembly was only $27 off eBay so not too bad. I got all the chewed up wiring spliced and reconnected, that was a bit of a challenge down in that well but it’s all done. The wiring was a zero-cost fix! I think I’m up to $566 in it now but I don’t think I needed the $139 air pump, so well maybe it’s only $427 at this point. Next job see why the fuel gauge is not working, maybe more rat damage in the wiring, or apparently these senders are a known common failure. And a new auxiliary battery which is pretty much like a lawn tractor battery so those aren’t much. I’m not sure these things are absolutely necessary but a new one will get rid of the idiot light. Maybe an oil change too. The AC doesn’t BLOW ICE COLD so that will need some gas. It’s running well, fires right up, the air suspension is working right, but the paint still looks like hell. I might take it out for a stealth run a bit later after traffic dies down and see how it actually runs on the road. Getting it there! --FT Sent from iFōn > On Apr 19, 2023, at 2:47 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes > wrote: > > Is there a reason why you had to go with the molded hose as opposed to just > using a piece of bulk hose? > > -D > >> On Apr 19, 2023, at 2:34 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> I don’t know, there were no marks on them for mechanical crimping, just a >> very tight band. >> >> --FT >> Sent from iFōn >> On Apr 19, 2023, at 2:19 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: >>> >>> I wonder how they "shrink" those bands on at the factory without a crimp >>> or clamp? >>> On Wed, Apr 19, 2023, at 13:06, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes wrote: I ended up cutting them off with a dremel wheel and it all went together ok. --FT Sent from iFōn >> On Apr 19, 2023, at 12:57 PM, Buggered Benzmail >> wrote: > > I ordered this used hose assembly off eBay for the $400E500 and only > need this one small piece of washer bottle heater hose to replace the one > the rats chewed. I did ask if it was a diesel in which case I probably would’ve got it for $300 then have some upside to sell the engine.
