I think in the last say 10 years they've drifted toward higher quality stuff.
Their hand tools are better than most hardware store brands including
Craftsman. Actually I'd say HF is head and shoulders above Craftsman at this
point. 1980's Craftsman was better but their stuff now is just junk.

Part of my reluctance is my basic stance againt buying special purpose
"gadgets."

This goes especially for the kitchen, but also the shop. Such items tend to sit
in the cupboard or on the shelf, taking up space, getting slowly pushed to the
back, and rarely used.

Of course there are exceptions.

I have my paper shotgun wads in a cigar box. My dad had them in a cigar box
that he got from some old timer. I like the idea of keeping that tradition
alive.

Those are the ones I use for loading black powder shotgun shells. I only load
12ga (at least for now) so it's simple. The stuff I use in the muzzle loaders
goes from the plastic bag into a tin to carry in my pocket. I have 3 different
sizes of wads so 3 different tins...

Re: [MBZ] O.T.ish. Drill Bits

2023-05-02 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Haha no those things are pretty much crap  I have a set and they’re good to
keep in the bag with the power drivers and drill and will do ok for random work
but not very good for metal.

The drill doctor is just a holder that keeps the bit at the proper angle for
the grinding wheel to touch it up. You could do the same on any other grinder
but this thing is fairly mindless, chuck a bit in it, twist it around a few
times and WALLAH yer dun. The activity goes well with a beer or two if you do a
bunch at once.

They're almost too nice to use, for lots of purposes. I still have loose

Re: [MBZ] Tedious shop work

2023-05-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
That is what I went with for regular sockets, although the HF ones only go up
to 19 or 20 for 3/8 size, and was missing a coupe of sizes on 1/2 and only go
up to 29 I believe. I need to figure out something with the sockets that won’t
go on those. I am then using those cheap metal socket rails that they snap into
for Allen’s, torx etc. I need to see if there is a better storage solution for
those. Next I need to work on the wrench drawer, pliers, and screw drivers. So
need to get some sort of storage for those. As far as screw drivers go, there
might just be in a drawer loose. After this, I’m going to pull everything out
of the 46” box on the other side of the shop and load in a 2nd set of tools for
that station. I also have 2 of the 5 drawer mechanic carts from HF that roll
around that I will load a set of the more common hand tools to roll around the
shop as needed, using the top open part for throwing bolts and small parts in
while working on a car so they don’t get lost.

Exactly my use for the old AV cart I bought at the university surplus store.

It's just a rectangular three-shelf steel cart on good quality rubber-wheel
casters with a rubber mat on the top shelf.

Easy to wheel around the car as I'm working on it, and easy to wheel back to
the tool storage area when I'm done.

2023-05-02 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Dreamer.  Might be worth $1k if you had a line on a good engine to drop
in.  I'm taking apart this ML350 donor I got and there is a good amount
of room to work around the engine and trans so a swap does not look to
be too big of a job.  All the electronics stuff attached is a pain but
would be easy enough to disconnect or swap over

Interior and exterior is in like new condition. Drove to the mechanic at
Archie’s in CF when engine light came on and they said the timing belt
was slipping and will need a new engine 7k for that . Car has no other
issues and still drives fine. I have no idea how long it will run I
didn’t ask . Clean title in hand and no accidents . This car was a
pleasure to drive with zero issues until last week when the engine light
came on . Drove it home from the garage and heard a knocking sound ,
parked it and took the plate off . After market Niche rims and tires
cost over $2,000 Great car for someone who can fix or has the time to
part out . Price is firm

He had a stack of cigar boxes with random odds and ends in them too. Cigar

Subject: [MBZ] Tedious shop work

Last year I moved several of the nice cars out of the shop to organize
it, put up the lift etc and they have been sitting outside way too
long. Now that I have that 450SEL done and out of the shop ready to go
off to its new owner at the end of the week, I have decided to move the
large 72" tool chest with top chest into place and start filling it in
an organized fashion. Today I spent some time just going around the
shop throwing in a box anything socket related, and other box anything
screwdriver or wrench related. I then spend a couple of hours loading
them into the chest on socket holders and/or socket rails. Basically
making complete sets of sockets and throwing the extras in a box to then
use to make complete sets for the tool box on the other side of the
shop. Anyway, very time consuming but hopefully soon I can then move on
to organizing the parts.

He was definitely up there in years, for sure.

I was listening to an interview with him on Fresh Air/Terri Gross last week and
heard a rendering of his song “Matilda”. First time I had ever heard it, and
amazingly, I knew a parody of it by Allen Sherman (“My Zelda”) that was on one
of his “party” records from the 1960s that my parents had. This was (at the
time) supposed to be “naughty” so we kids weren’t allowed to listen to it. Of
course we immediately did so when the parents left the house…

Re: [MBZ] Tedious shop work

2023-05-02 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I have a big roll-around box at both houses. One I made many years ago and has
served me well, the other a brand new Crapsman roll around box that’s medium
height.

“Roll around” is kind of a misnomer, as I never roll either around, they both
have dedicated spots agains the wall of the shop that they’re not moved from. I
guess if I had a larger area to work in I would roll my big boxes around, but
they’re both within a few steps of any bay in the garage.

I did just that when I outfitted the Flagstaff shop - socket organizers, racks
for pliers, etc., etc. Not cheap to do, but they definitely make things far
better organized and they do save some space. I’m spoiled when I do any work
there, as it’s so better organized than my setup at the Florida house. That’s
one of the reasons why I have considered dropping some coin for garage storage
stuff - it just makes life so much easier.

Strauss & Co., the third oldest continuously operating tobacconist in the U.S.
located in Cincinnati that believe it or not, is still in business:
https://www.e-straus.com

He would buy a big box/case, whatever, and the tobacco was packed in these
metal cans that were 5x4x8 in size roughly. Because there were so many of these
cans around the house, like many of us have probably seen the old dude’s shop
with the Mason jars for storage, he used them for storing stuff in the workshop.

He had a number of customers who had machine shops. One of them would give him
all of their cast off (dull) drill bits.

I have a couple of tobacco cans still in my garage with those bits. Gotta drill
a hole? Dig around in the cans and find a bit, might need sharpening, but after
a few strokes of a file it’s good. If I break it, big deal, go grab another.

Yes, I broke a 1/2” drill bit with seemingly little effort.
I returned to my shitshow of bits to see if there was another 1/2”, I realized
I’ve been using this mish mash of bits all my life. What an epiphany. Harbor
freight, here I come.
$19 later, 1/8” thru 1/2” titanium bits in a tidy case. These will do.

I have found, though some here have derided them, a large tool box to be
very helpful in keeping things organized. When I was in my teens and 20s,
the saying, "A place for everything and everything in its place," was
abhorred, but it's the only way to have things work consistently.

The type of socket organizers like:

https://www.harborfreight.com/peg-type-sae-socket-tray-3-piece-red-70019.html

do take a lot of room -- as I found when setting up my new-to-me tool box
and why a large tool box is necessary, but they make organizing sockets
very easy. No more will I lose a socket by having a small socket somehow
get inside a larger socket and not be visible when looking in the drawer.

Agreed, and it’s a behavior that one has to develop. I’m hard core about it (I
don’t shadow my tools, so I’m not that bad) and make sure everything gets put
away when I’m done. I might wait until the job is done if it’s something major,
otherwise, I put stuff back as soon as I’m done with it.

There is a strong likelihood of an expansion of the existing garage to add
another three bays with an office and restroom. If that gets green lighted, I
would say the potential for a lift will be very high. I’ll certainly put the
infrastructure in place if we go forward so that I can do it should I decide to.

This has been one of the best parts of the homestead in AZ. Getting to set up a
garage from scratch has been a really enjoyable experience. Being able to
organize things from right out of the gate as opposed to having to work with
existing stuff has made it a lot of fun and allowed me to set things up right
the first time.

While it’s not in the current budget, I can see the value in those garage
cabinet systems. Things get stored out of the way and are organized so they’re
easy to locate. Of course, half the battle is putting things away where they
belong when you’re done with them.
