190s until recently were not particularly desirable. Looked nice but not a lot
of performance. A decent one might be available for $20-30k if even that much.
Prices have been going crazy the last few years.

Other than busting some wheel bolts off one of the cars with my 1/2” Milwaukee
cordless impact, I haven’t had a chance to try it or the smaller ones I have on
some serious repair related jobs.

I was using a 1/2” rough/long spade bit to drill holes in railroad ties for
rebar with my 1/2” Milwaukee cordless drill today. That thing would twist your
arm off!

A retractable air hose would be nice, but my compressor can’t be stored where I
can get power to it. As a result I would have to move it out and plug it in. By
then I might as well use my 50’ air hose. I live for the day when I can have a
shop with dedicated air piping/compressor.

You would have to got through the system to see what the issues are. Could be a
line or block or valve leaking, pump issue, or one or more air shocks. A scan
could give an indication but to be certain you’d have to go through the entire
system.

Unless there is a clear indication of what the particular issue is, that price
is wa high. The 55 gets a premium but not that much for a suspension
problem

I like the big sets of cheap bits. When they are worn or are not up to the
job I replace them with Latrobe (high Cobalt alloy). So my cheap bits

I went on a wire shelf bender a few years ago. You know, the stainless steel
ones like they use in commercial kitchens. You can pick up the real thing
stupid cheap on FB marketplace and Craigslist. Most of mine have casters, too,
so they can be moved around if I chose to.

The only drawback is their inability to store small things. For instance, a
spray can doesn’t sit evenly/upright unless it’s centered on a couple of the
wires. I did get heavy plastic shelf liner sort of things with a few of them
and they help.

[MBZ] Speaking of tools

2023-05-03 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Max and I went to the knacker Saturday to get some 211 parts.  I was
going to get a mirror off a car (black, matches the $400E500) and it
appeared to have torx screws holding it on.  So I got torx drivers and
they wouldn't fit.  I look and the screws have these little nibs in the
middle for "security."  $h1t.

Max got a whole door and was going to swap the mirror and it turns out
they are not "torx" but a 5-star variant instead of 6 points, and with
the little nib.  d@mn.

So I first ordered the torx "security" version with a hole in the bit
then he told me they were 5point and found a set of those so ordered
those too.  They all came today from a Large Wymyn so now I have a
proper set of bits for my travel toolbag.  I have a driver in my travel
toolbox so all good.

Now I guess I can go around stealing 211 mirrors

I had to buy one of those little “cubes” to crank the piston down when we had
Ford Focii in the house. C-clamped and beat on the thing before I did some
research to discover that the piston has to be screwed back into the caliper.
Weird.

I’m very pleased with the HF hand tool set I bought to start the new collection
at the AZ manse. They work just fine and seem to be made well.

Re: [MBZ] Tedious shop work

2023-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
As my HF kit increases I'm increasingly impressed with their tools.

For instance if you're still cramming a screwdriver into the caliper to push
pads back you really need this:
https://www.harborfreight.com/disc-brake-pad-and-caliper-service-tool-kit-11-piece-63264.html?_br_psugg_q=brake+caliper+tool

I bought it because VW rear calipers have to rotate as they get pushed back.
That's not an option, you ruin the calipers if they don't rotate. You can buy a
little cube thing at the autoparts store and get frustrated and chuck it across
the garage or you can buy the right tool for the job. For $50 it's
indispensable when required and just really good the rest of the time...

Re: [MBZ] Tedious shop work

2023-05-03 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I found that the wire racks for pliers work well.
https://www.harborfreight.com/wire-pliers-rack-70022.html

I also found this rack for holding battery powered tools:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09F98P9S5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1

I haven’t found a place to hang it just yet, but I can see where it would be
handy on the side of a tool cart, for example. Organizing things is fun, but
can get expensive.

go on those. I am then using those cheap metal socket rails that they snap into
for Allen’s, torx etc. I need to see if there is a better storage solution for
those. Next I need to work on the wrench drawer, pliers, and screw drivers. So
need to get some sort of storage for those. As far as screw drivers go, there
might just be in a drawer loose. After this, I’m going to pull everything out
of the 46” box on the other side of the shop and load in a 2nd set of tools for
that station. I also have 2 of the 5 drawer mechanic carts from HF that roll
around that I will load a set of the more common hand tools to roll around the
shop as needed, using the top open part for throwing bolts and small parts in
while working on a car so they don’t get lost.

Still need to get some more organizers. I also have pics of my big work bench
that is vastly improved from yesterday, as well as my other smaller tool box
and my service cart. You can see how really bad it is.

I use it to pull out the tools I think I'll need, it keeps them right at
hand.. and when I'm done with the project.. tools go back on the cart and
it rolls back to the big box and get wiped off and put away..

Good work. From experience, I can say it will serve you well in the
