A friend of mine needed a headliner in a Chrysler and found a guy who told him 
to leave it at Walmart with the keys and $100 under the floor mat. A day or two 
later the car was back with a new headliner, pretty nicely done. Undocumented 
in all aspects. This was a few years ago.

[MBZ] CL600 oil smoke

I used the endoscope to look around behind the right valve cover and while 
there was some oil on stuff it wasn’t a huge amount. I started it and oil smoke 
was pretty thick burning (evaporating) off the exhaust pipes. I put the scope 
down again but couldn’t see anything obviously leaking. But after a few minutes 
the smoke went away and there was oil leak apparent. Weird. A Heisenberg event? 
 A Schrödinger event?

I guess the next step is to get under the car and look from underneath for oil 
leaks.

[MBZ] ML63 AMG

I fooled around with the ML63 AMG this evening. The ISM (integrated servo 
module that shifts the transmission) is Not Happy but I could hear it doing 
something. The vehicle will not start unless it’s in P and between the shifter 
stalk and the electronics and motor in it something was not communicating 
although the trans was in P but the nannies did not sense that so wouldn’t 
allow a start. 

I kept cycling the key and could hear the ISM motor running when I activated 
the steering wheel shifter thingie which is just an electronic switch. 

The PO said the push button start didn’t work but it was and would bring the 
car alive.  I kept cycling it and LO it started!  Yay!  And it shifted into R 
and D and N then back to P. H. I shut it off and it started back up again 
so that was encouraging but it wouldn’t shift. H. 

At different times the scanner was showing it was in P but then was uncertain 
so it wouldn’t allow a start. Hmmm. 

It has an active ISM fault code (and there were some stored codes too but I 
cleared them and those didn’t come back. There was some random message in some 
module about no voltage on an emergency P shifter. 

I’m wondering now if there is a loose electrical connection at the ISM on the 
side of the trans. I’ll get under there tomorrow and see what’s going on. I do

[MBZ] hmmmm E350 E500 CLK350droptop

A buddy lives about 2.5-3hr up the road.  He was riding his motorcycle 
around the other day and sees these Benzes sitting at a shop out in the 
country.  I told him to find out what the stories are.  He went by 
today, they either have bad conductor plates or the E500 looks slammed.  
Told him to get the VINs on the 350s.  Could be good LOBALL material, he 
has worked on a bunch of cars including older Benzes in the past so he 
has a sense of them.


The convertible looks really nice, red/black top.

I've got an old iPad I use with mine so I've got a dedicated viewer for it. 
Definitely helpful. If I hadn't had one to reconnect the throttle spring on a 
W140 I would have had to pull the intake manifold.

the mail, downloaded the app, plugged it into my phone and ipad, and it
worked!  Has lights and seems to have good resolution and will focus
down to a coupla inches. I think it was like $14 so a reasonable price.

I'm going out to see if I can find the oil leaking off the back of the
CL600 head or somewhere in back I can't see directly

The only one I knew of closed during the pandemic. They were the traditional 
automotive machine shop that did heads, brake drums, valve seats, etc.

I'd have to do some checking to see if there are any others.

In Tampa there's at least two automotive machine shops within 10-15 miles of my 
house. I'm sure if you live in a smaller city your options might be limited. 
Still, that said, Bloomington should still have a machine shop or two. I would 
be stunned if they don't.

The Rolls in the 80s were soulless sleds. They just don't have any identity. 
Take that hood ornament off and maybe the grille and you wouldn't be able to 
identify the car.

gasket so basically take off the head…. If it had to be machined that would be 
more time and cost. Nothing too exotic but a few $100 for parts and machining 
and some time (which could be a fun learning experience) and looks like you’d 
have a really nice car

Only minor problem is the battery keeps dying and that’s only because I 
had music in the car and the car audio shop wrongly hooked it up. Unplug 
it and you may not have that problem. I just didn’t have time for it.
