Re: [MBZ] OT: E-Golf

2023-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
All electric cars made in the last 10-15 years have regenerative braking. Not a
special feature...

I bought my 2015 Jetta TDI in 2019, it had 60k on it. I paid right around $9k
which was pretty much top dollar at the time but it was in very good shape and
low mileage for a TDI.

Car prices are bonkers...

abuse.  If the price comes down from $13.5k I may consider acquiring it.

2023-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Agreed, if we get an EV I'll look hard at the Bolt. They discounted it
recently, it seems like a lot of value.

Have you ridden in a Prius? I haven't been in the latest generation (looks a
lot like a Tesla if you ask me) but the older ones rode pretty rough. They're
decent cars but but a lot more road feel than you'd get in a Mercedes.

Tesla is getting sued for lying about range in their specs, which they have
been doing for years. This has to impact their energy efficiency, because
they are going less miles in tbe same battery pack charge. So it could be
fraud on an EPA/CARB level.

For some reason I find the brand new Prius to be an attractive car. We make
some longer trips and for me the ability to do that in an efficient, modern
car without worrying where the next charge station is would be a valuable
feature. People drive the wheels off those cars.

AAA doesnt pay enough. Drivers will take any other call first, even if they
accept the AAA. USAA towing is worthless for the same reason.

Charge air cooling leaks cause a lot of hard to pinpoint issues in these

2023-08-04 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was driving the CL500 this afternoon.  It has been raining the road
was still a bit wet.  The car has wide Toyo tires on the back that I
think are a pretty hard compound, or they are more for dry conditions.
Anyway, I took a turn with a bit of verve and the back end broke loose
(which it has done before in similar conditions) and the ESP intervened,
I could feel the ABS being applied to different wheels and the car
sorted itself right out.  Not that it was in any danger really, there
was plenty of room and I was correcting the slide, but it is good to
know that a 21yo nanny still has some ability to deal with my energetic
driving or borderline stupidity!

2023-08-04 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Interesting. The only thing I have found good about traction control is
switching it off.

I was trying to climb a snowy hill in my Volvo last winter. It's an XC90 but
front-wheel drive only.

When the wheels started to slip, it backed off the power, and I came to a stop.
Could not get going again. I'd back down the hill and try to get more of a run
at it but pretty much the same every time. I didn't really give it much more of
a chance though, I backed down, turned off the traction control, hit the hill
as fast as I could go and powered up with the wheels spinning.

traction control back off power and wondered what would happen next. I kept my
foot where it was at about 1/4 throttle, the computer backed off the power and
the truck stopped moving.

The next part was interesting, the computer would add a little power, a wheel
would spin a little, it would back off and then, I think hold the brake a
little on the wheel that slipped. Slowly we started to make progress again. It
was weird but I could definitely feel the truck playing with the rear brakes to
find which wheel had the most traction. Pretty soon normal movement resumed.

This was on my 2018 RAM 1500 classic. Its the basest of base models but
apparently the traction control is pretty smart. I would expect an EV to be
able to do better.

Also has a 107 that looks decent, quit running with black smoke from the

Chevy Bolt seems like excellent value.

Re: [MBZ] OT: E-Golf

2023-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I bet they'll do well, they're heavy but more importantly they're balanced
since the batteries are stashed all around the car.

One of Angie's family has a Tesla Model 3. They've had it for 2 or 3 years now
and absolutely love it. Their other car is a Subaru wagon that they use for
hauling the kids back and for to college but for running around town the Tesla
is the one.

One thing I like about the Tesla is the ability to have it preheat/precool from
your phone while it's still plugged in. So it's running on shore power, getting
the interior to a nice temp. That'll save battery since the HVAC only has to
maintain when you're driving.

Re: [MBZ] What ev to buy

2023-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've been thinking about an EV as well. Now that I rarely commute we really
don't need 2 diesel cars. Angie's Golf has been down with a bad tire for 2
months. I went to start it yesterday and the battery was dead. It'd been moved
around the yard a few times so that wasn't a real surprise.

Even one of the low distance older cars would be fine for her to make the 20
mile round trip to work or for me to go 12 miles round trip to the gym. I think
short trips is why my Jetta needed a new NOx sensor earlier this year. I've
been trying to get it on a distance thrash every couple weeks to prevent future
problems.

Alternately I'm thinking about something fun like an old Jeep CJ.

Re: [MBZ] What ev to buy

2023-08-04 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
That's a possibility, but one of the main reasons I would want an EV for
running around locally is the lack of need for maintenance/repairs. Bring in an
IC car, even if it's a hybrid, and you kind of defeat that.

Wouldn’t a hybrid be the gateway vehicle to an EV? Buy a Toyota Venza
(supposedly a Lexus in Toyota badging) before going electric?

I've looked at these for the AZ house. My biggest concern was driving it in the
winter. Not as far as range or charging, but ground clearance and handling. I
just wonder how well these will do in snow?

The seller has a genuine Meyers Manx kit car. They'll assemble it for you for

Was running when parked, needed throttle body work and was missing on

before it was parked. Everything there, some things in better shape than
others.

I know that neighborhood well. My former hardwood supplier is in Daleville. I
know exactly where it is along SR 67.

As for the car, despite the Vaseline on the lens it looks nice, but I would
avoid any SL later than 2001. This has hydropneumatic suspension (ABC) and will
drain your wallet faster than you can imagine if it hasn't been properly cared
for.

[MBZ] Make a cash Offer. No title 1994 Mercedes SL500,$1,950

Was running when parked, needed throttle body work and was missing on
one cylinder from a bad plug wire. Put over $3,000 in transmission
before it was parked. Everything there, some things in better shape than
others.

With my massive array of solar roof panels and EV hookup, it makes more
sense to drive an EV for routine errands.

I watched the Fisker Product Vision Day show on youtube last night. They
have some really cool vehicles about to reach the market. The only one in
my price range is the Pear, due in 2025.
