Re: [MBZ] 124 Tires

2023-09-06 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Cool wheels, but I always feel like they are trying too hard. The 15 hole
r129s look stock and allow a wider tire.

Re: [MBZ] Obligatory oil question

2023-09-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'd been using LiquiMoly for my VWs as they have quite strict oil standards.
With rising prices I've switched to Rowe for my Jetta and Pentosin for Angie's
Golf.

I'd use Rowe (a German brand) for both but they only have (at least through my
distributor) a 5w30. Her car consumes 5w30 but not 5w40 so thats what it gets.

They all seem to be fine oil.

I'm working 12:30am to 5:30am this week for students in India. My parent's
house was free so I've been staying there. Today I went to Wal-Mart to get
supplies to change the oil in my mother's Jeep Cherokee. Mobil 1 0w20 was
$29/5qt which I thought was pretty okay. They had zero cashiers working and the
6 self check lines were backed way up. I very nearly walked out without
purchasing, probably should have.

No good deed goes unpunished.

The job looks pretty easy, I'll do it after class while its still cool.

What my industry contact says:

If it's certified API SP, GF-6, or Dexos1 Generation3, just about any
"American" oil is going to be made to meet the standard as cheaply as
possible. But that's OK, the standard is a very high hurdle. Doesn't
matter if it's Kendall, M1, Syntec, Valvoline, or Pennzoil, the oils all
perform the same.
EU advertising standards are higher, if it's sold in EU as 'synthetic',
it's made with more expensive base stocks than USA 'synthetic'. In USA
'synthetic' means 'whatever we want it to mean'.

One known exception: Redline exceeds SP. But my oil guy will charge me
2-3x as much as he'll sell me Kendall for.

Royal Purple is no better than anything else.
Luqui Moly didn't enter the conversation, so I can't say if it's
considered premium or not.

If it doesn't have the API logo on it, you don't want it, no matter how
flowery the advertising lingo is. Oil guy speaks well of Warren made
private label oils, including Amazon, Kirkland, or SuperTech. My last
oil purchase was two 160oz jugs of Kirkland for $32 on sale. I could
have gotten a 6 gallon bag in a box of Kendall as cheaply or cheaper,
but I no longer use enough 5W30 to buy 24 qts at a time.

Pick up some 15 hole r129 spares on ebay. They are usually like new and you
can get a full set of 5 reasonably if you make some offers. They are 7"
instead of 6" so it opens up more tire width options. The 7" does not fit
into the trunk well perfectly, so you can keep a 6" spare wheel if you
want. I cannot recall what tires I put on but kept same diameter and went a
bit wider with good results on the 420 before I got rid of it inadvertantly
by crashing it. Sigh.

Re: [MBZ] Is a diesel worth it now?

2023-09-06 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My 2014 W212 E250 Bluetec sedan regularly achieves 41-48 mpg on the highway
depending on the miles driven, so the savings are very significant. On
mixed driving it's 30-35.

[MBZ] Is a diesel worth it now?

2023-09-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Recently diesel was so expensive that I’m sure a lot of folks were wondering if
it makes sense to drive a diesel. For purposes of this I’m setting aside the
reliability/durability argument. I realize that is the factor that is most
important to many.

If just the issue of efficiency and cost is considering, it looks like diesel
would make sense again.

I just filled up at Costco with 93 for $3.55. The station across the street has
diesel for $3.87. I compared the cost of my 124 gas versus a 1990 300D 2.5.
Using the EPA mileage estimates and their formula of 45 % highway and 55% city
at the above prices per gallon.

The gasser 124 costs $2950 annually. The 300D is $2250. Maybe this ONE reason
the 124 Diesel is still selling at a premium.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key cost

2023-09-06 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
You may find a locksmith that has the blanks, there’s nothing special about how
the keys are cut. However, I’ve never trusted anyone but MB for a replacement
key.

Definitely order a couple of new keys, one if you’re being frugal. Also note if
you have the slightest amount of resistance or “catching” with any key, as it
may be time to replace the lock cylinder. In fact, you might want to look at
just ordering a replacement cylinder, as you get a new key with it - might be a
better deal. Then you’ll have a new cylinder on the shelf to replace the old
one at your leisure.

[MBZ] Early review of BAT Sale

2023-09-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
As I mentioned earlier, the BAT transaction was going very smoothly. The car
has arrived, I have looked it over and I’ve driven it. I can say definitely
that I am very happy with everything. The seller communicated well, the
description was honest, any issues (radio) were disclosed and he included extra
parts he had not mentioned in the listing.

I used BAT shipping. I figured it was better than trying to get quotes from a
ton of companies I knew nothing about. When I had a question, BAT answered it
immediately. The car arrived within 1 week of the end of the sale. This was
my first purchase through BAT and I was very pleased.

Stock wheels are easily worth $1000-$1500. Evaporator failures in the facelift

Convertible top isn’t bad to DIY but does take some skill.

I say "rolling restoration”.

Poor idle is probably due to a bad plunger seal on the fuel distributor. Fuel

Luxury car storage firm to build in Mount Pleasant with eye on 5 other sites in
Southeast
By Warren L. Wise ww...@postandcourier.com

MOUNT PLEASANT — Construction on the first of six planned luxury vehicle
storage facilities soon will get underway in the state's fourth-largest
municipality.

The Vault owner Lee Janik said work is expected to begin this month on the
first building to house 29 already-sold-and-reserved units on two acres on
Faison Road, about halfway between Costco Wholesale and Mount Pleasant Regional
Airport.

Once constuction is completed, Janik will turn his focus to adding another 27
"motor condominiums" next door in the gated facility. The property sits between
land owned by the town and a bus depot for Charleston County School District.

Charleston-area's new entertainment venue to open in September

Earlier this year, Janik applied to state environmental regulators for a
stormwater permit. No wetlands will be disturbed, he said.

Janik plans to add similar facilities in Hilton Head, Nashville and Atlanta by
2025 with a long-range outlook for sites on Daniel Island and Kiawah Island.

The car storage units are individually sold, similar to a condominium complex.
Once the facility is built and owners are in place, Janik will turn the site
over to a board of directors to oversee.

The 1,000-square-foot units also will come with heating and/or air conditioning
and will be individually metered.

Historic sailors' home and chapel in downtown Charleston are for sale

"There are absolutely no shared costs," Janik said. "You only pay for what you
use."

Units also can be customized by installing a loft and restroom, epoxying the
floor, putting in a flat-screen TV and refrigerator or setting up a couch or
two. Stubbing for utilities will be put in place when the 29,500-square-foot
structure is built.

"It’s not just a place to 'store' your prize vehicles," according to the
Vault's website. "It’s a community. It’s a lifestyle."

Janik started a similar company for boat storage near Lake Erie in northern
Ohio in 2006. He moved to the Lowcountry in 2016 and started offering luxury
car storage units in 2021. With the first phase sold out, he expects the second
offering to go more quickly once construction gets underway.

"They will probably be sold out by the end of the year," Janik said. "I will be
actively buying property for the future expansions in 2024."

Charleston County land records show Janik bought the 2-acre site for the
initial construction in 2022 for $500,000 through Vault Faison Road LLC.

The 2-acre parcel where the Faison Road expansion is planned changed hands
earlier this year to a company called Dano Co. LLC for $1 million before being
transferred to Janik's affiliate in July.

Would you call someone who bought the car for $700 less than a year ago a
flipper?
