Interior looks nice and the paint might buff up nicely but I’m thinking $1k for
sitting so long. Maybe $1.5 given it’s a coupé

I have done it -- twice -- and found it's not difficult, except for
initially breaking free the fan clutch center bolt.

It turns out there is a hole in the pulley and a pair of ribs on the
water pump where one can insert an allen wrench or a bent heavy steel wire
to keep the fan pulley from turning. And trying to clamp the belt to keep
it from turning doesn't always work.

I have three ZIP files I will send off list to Dimitri:

1.6M 1993.Serpentine.Belt+Tensioner.Replacement.Info.zip

[MBZ] The 09 Bluetec is drinking oil

2023-09-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
On the 700 mile trip home with it, it didn’t use any oil. Of course the batwing
was cracked and probably not really sealing to the turbo. New batwing, full
service including all fluids and filters, new tires, new motor mounts. I have
taken it to St Louis once and on the way back the oil message came on to check
at next fill up. I then drove it to Joplin and back. So I would say perhaps
7-800 miles. It does appear to have an oil leak that seems to vary, sometimes
it leaves big spots sometimes small ones. Checked oil yesterday morning and it
was down to the bottom mark. Added 2 quarts which IIRC put it about 3/4 to full
from my quick check. Yesterday drove it about 85 miles for an overnight stop.
On the way home the message came on again. Checked it and it’s down to about
half or maybe slightly less. So less than 200 miles it dropped from almost full
to half or so. I also passed a vehicle on a 2 lane highway and shortly after it
threw a check engine light. Codes are for pressure differential sensor, which
pass the test in SDS, and ash context at upper limit. Checked that at its at
100%. I’m guessing with the e batwing fixed the pressure control valve (PCV) is
allowing oil to be sucked into the turbo more than it should. I have not
replaced this yet but it’s pretty much a maintenance item on the 642. The
diaphragm gets hard and allows oil to be sucked in. There is also lots of oil
caked all over that side of the engine. I am going to stop driving it until I
replace the pressure valve and will also replace the intake seals that are on
the RF intake tract, seems oily there also. I am assuming it is burning too
much oil right now and loaded up the DPF. After I do the work I will do a
manual regen and see what it ends up. Worse case I pull it off and wash it out,
maybe delete it. If it’s still sucking oil after replacing these parts I’m most
likely going to dump it. I would hate to though because it runs really good.

Re: [MBZ] ML63 is ALIIIIIVE!!!!

2023-09-07 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
In more detail, which you’ll understand when I’m done:

The ISM, or intelligent servo module, controls the mechanical aspect of
shifting the automatic transmission. It gets a signal from the shifter to tell
it to engage the transmission in the chosen gear. If your ISM flakes out, the
car is essentially undrivable. The only fix is to replace the ISM, but even if
you do, it has to be coded to the car/VIN to be functional. Otherwise, it won’t
“talk” to the other devices on the CANBUS network that connects it to all the
other modules in the system.

I believe Floyd located a replacement ISM and installed it on the vehicle with
no success. This is because it has to be version-coded, which can only be done
with a direct connection to the Fatherland/MB via an SDS system., which is, for
the most part, a dealer-only option. Some dealers will do coding only for a
flat fee, but in most cases only if they know you or have a professional
relationship with you, like an independent shop that services MBs who buy their
parts from the dealer. For us “regular” folks it’s highly improbable that they
would do it for you unless you purchased a new ISM. And maybe then even not.

Figure on a Mercedes built after about 2005 or so, depending on the model, will
have this sort of setup. It’s actually pretty reliable - ISM failures aren’t
that common as far as I know. Hence the reason why the seller whom Floyd bought
his ML63 from was willing to part with it at a bargain-basement price.
Otherwise, it’s a doorstop.

The belt is mince meat! The idler pulley (or tensioner pulley, are they the
same?) is very stiff. I bet that’s what caused the belt to disintegrate. Is
this easy to replace?

Re: [MBZ] ML63 is ALIIIIIVE!!!!

2023-09-07 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yes he could do it if you have a DAS/Xentry system that is up to date and that
he could do a remote session into. My system was out of date so I dropped it
off to him and he was going to update the computer with new software but it
needed a new larger hard drive and more memory. I ordered that stuff but the
computer didn’t like the memory (2 types actually) so that didn’t work. So he
loaned me one of his XENTRY machines which we used today. I have a good Wi-Fi
signal out where it is parked. He accessed it with UltraViewer and basically
just controlled it from his desk. Worked great.

He has a lot of car images already in his systems but didn’t have this ML63 so
had to download it. He did extract and copy what was in the car but wanted a
clean updated install into the car so it is a 2023 version.

It was questionable whether this “new” ISM could be programmed. Apparently some
can’t but this one was able to take the new image for the car. Once it was done
vehicle started right up and no more faults.

So anyway a bit more mechanical work to do to get it driveable but nothing like
messing with software and computers.

[MBZ] Custom realtor spec -- Mercedes 560sel - $11,000 (Naples)

2023-09-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
When I bought the car, it drove perfectly, but I had some work done to
get hoses, belts, and some other items refreshed. I have two receipts
that show a lot of that initial work and it came out to $3,700. Besides
that, I've replaced both fuel pumps, lowered the car, and added the 17"
Lorinser wheels that are powder coated white. The exhaust has also been
redone so it's quiet when cruising but if you accelerate hard you hear
some feedback.  But I haven't spent any money on replacing the hood pad.
