Re: [MBZ] Actual fuel economy on a 2014 E250 BlueTEC

2023-09-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My Jetta seems to be 3-4% generous on the dash, pretty close. The 2018 RAM 1500
is more like 10%.
When I took the Jetta to Caribou in August I did just over 700 miles on a tank.
From Portland north until I95 stopped I was running 85-90mph consistently.
North of Bangor I never went under 90. 49mpg at that speed...

That's good.
In my red Cruze 50.1 on the dash was 47.7 on the calculator.
Only time I ever went 600 miles in a car with a 13 gallon tank.
I think all three of my Mom's Malibus were at least as optimistic.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 20kW Cummins genset never used - $20,000

2023-09-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Maybe 10 years ago I very nearly bought a lister. It was the big one, 16hp? 2
cylinder, it sold cheap, the guy needed it gone.At the time I didn't have a
building to keep it in or even a loader to get it off the trailer with,
assuming my snowmobile trailer would have handled it.
These days I'd love to have one. We ran the AC a bunch at camp last summer, a
lister would have been quieter and just more pleasant to listen to.

Todd’s in Columbia SC. He’s trying to figure out the ML63. I’ve been to his
shop a coupla times while we mess with it. Last week he had his Russian buddy
in Moscow doing a remote session on it. Monday I got a new chinee ISM for it
which he programmed. Tomorrow I’ll get it moved closer to his shop on the
trailer so he can get Wi-Fi and hook up his Xentry computer to it and see if it
might work. Probably not, there might be a wiring issue. The Russian guy tried
some workarounds through the CGW but no joy.

Anyway he has this GL sitting there he wants to unload. $5k plus like $150 for
chain and fluid and should be good to go. I’m warming to the GL and of course a
diesel has some appeal. But maybe I’m stupid but that’s never stopped me
before.

That’s amazing. This airplane was most responsible for the end of the cold war
and Soviet regime. Scared the shite out of the komrads. They had nothing that
could compete and trying to do so would have bankrupted them (more than they
already were).

It would have been very cool to see the variants built. When fuel was a quarter
a gallon it made a lot more sense though. Those supersonic turbojets sucked
prodigious quantities of Jet A (or variant).

I forgot John Deere…

Kohler used Lister and Petter engines, but mainly Listers. Single and

to exciter crank the unit.

I worked on a project where a signboard company used Petter diesels to run an
automotive alternator to charge 12VDC batteries. These things ran continuously
and would do so for thousands of hours. When they wore out the engine was sent
in and a new one was provided with a core charge of sorts, and off they went
with their signboard for another many thousand hours. We had to return the
worn-out engines to Petter to get credit for them. We would fill a couple half
half-height pallets of them during the peak (summer) construction season to
return to Petter.

[MBZ] Warp power restored

2023-09-22 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I put the cleaned out DPF back on the car and reset it in SDS. I then hosed
down the engine with degreaser and power washed the crap out of it. Took the
car for a spin and what a massive difference in power. It just seemed before
the have as much power as the GL. Now it’s night and day different. Took it for
a mile and back, then idling in the driveway for about a minute I have a good
side oil spot. I can clearly see it running down the side of the transmission
bell housing on the drivers side. I guess it’s oil cooler time. I’m going to go
ahead and get the parts ordered. It will he good to learn on this 211 because I
need to do the job on the 251.

If I could find a nice Lister(oid) CS engine I'd really consider finishing
the genset project of my dreams. I have a nice MD-3 generator, VERY
large and heavy, that could be driven by it. Both 60Hz and 400Hz 3-phase
windings, the 400Hz side could drive a rectifier array feeding a 48V
battery bank, feeding the large FerrUPS I have. Making a CS drive
a 1,200 RPM generator is the trickiest bit. The MD-3 is more than
capable of providing electric start to the CS, with a fair bit of work
on the command-and-control side.

Power could be off for weeks at a time and I wouldn't care. Fuel
efficiency of the low-RPM CS engines is unmatched. Power quality
(through the FerrUPS) would be unbeatable. Diesel fuel stores
indefinitely. CS engines are quiet. What they are _not_ is mobile,
but neither are MD-3's and FerrUPS inverters!

The MD-3 is to my Kohler generator, as my Kohler is to the rope-pull
Generac. Makes the Kohler look like a toy. I love Mil-spec gear!

And, for the high-power days when 5-6kW won't cut it, there's always
Big Bertha.

That is roughly what my Dodge Cummins and V10 trucks are rated at.
Yes, they tow nicely. When new they were the class leaders.

[MBZ] GL320CDI/GL320(350) Bluetec?

2023-09-22 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I am going to check out this vehicle tomorrow.  Lot of work done to it
but still needs a transfer case chain ($100 part). He has $5k of work
and parts into it and just wants to make it back. I think it has about
160/180kmi on it if I recall.

I'm a little confused on these different engines.  This is a late 09
build and is probably a 10 model so it has the "new" engine with
Bluetec, a 350 designation maybe, I 'm not sure.  I thought it was a
320CDI when I looked at it briefly, but who knows how it switched over
or if there is rebadging.  I guess that happened for 2010 model year. Or
maybe it is a 320 Bluetec.  It appears to be all the same engine but
with Bluetec added to the CDI version.  Whatever.  It appears to have
398 (or maybe 457) ftlb torks which will be good for towing.

There are 2 versions of the engine OM642 DE30 and OM642 LS DE30 with
lots more power/torque.  I can't tell which this one has.

 Diesel engines

Model Years Engine Power Torque 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph)
GL320 CDI 2006–2009 OM642 DE30

3.0 L V6 turbo
 	165 kW (221 hp)

@ 3,800 rpm 510 N⋅m (376 lb⋅ft)
@ 1,600–2,800 rpm 9.5 s
GL350 CDI 2009135 kW (181 hp)
@ 5,000–6,250 rpm 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft)
@ 1,750–2,000 rpm
2010–2012 OM642 LS DE30

3.0 L V6 turbo
 	195 kW (261 hp)

@ 3,800 rpm 620 N⋅m (457 lb⋅ft)
@ 1,600–2,400 rpm 7.9 s
GL350 BlueTEC 2009–2012 OM642 DE30

@ 3,400 rpm 540 N⋅m (398 lb⋅ft)
@ 1,600–2,400 rpm 10.7 s

"For 2009, the GL320 Bluetec model replaced the GL320 CDI, boasting
cleaner emissions that allowed it to be 50-state legal."

Originally came with run-flats too so no spare but I guess that could be
retrofitted.

https://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_DatacardAction.php?lang=E=4jgbf25e29a525409
says it's a GL320 CDI/GL350 BlueTEC 4MATIC 164.825

*Delivery date:* 12 05 2009

M30 - DISPLACEMENT 3.0 LITER
M642 - V6 DIESEL ENGINE OM642

474 - DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER

U41 - FUEL - WATER SEPARATOR AND LUBRICATION PACKAGE
U42 - DIESEL EXHAUST TREATMENT BLUETEC SCR GENERATION 1

So I guess it is really a GL350 though the same 3.0 liter engine but
with pee juice.

07 and 08 are CDI (no urea and have a spare)
09 and up are Bluetech and have urea and no spare.

Kaleb just finished the DPF so I guess his is basically the same engine

Re: [MBZ] OT: 20kW Cummins genset never used - $20,000

2023-09-22 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Onan was purchased/acquired by Cummins back in the late 1980s/early 90s. They
haven’t existed other than as a brand name since.

Kohler used all sorts of industrial engines over the years:

International Harvester
Hercules
White-Hercules
Continental
Lister
Petter
Wisconsin
Ford
Chevrolet
Cummins
Detroit Diesel
Mitsubishi
Toyota

I’m sure there are others I missed, but those are the ones I can recall off the
top of my head. And those don’t include the smaller engines that *were* built
by Kohler, including their flat-head water-cooled four-cylinder L600 and L654
engines that powered up to 7.5kW generators. Do you remember those little
yellow utility trailers the telephone company vans used to pull around behind
them? Every one of those had a Kohler 7.5R27 in it with one of those engines.
It provided power, lighting, and air through a blower along with heat for that
air via a heat exchanger that scavenged heat from engine coolant. They were
used primarily for manhole work.

And yes, it’s a deal because what I said and Jim said as well - it’s a
commercial-grade unit, not a consumer-grade unit. It runs at 1800 RPM and is a
12-lead machine, capable of producing either single or three-phase power.

It’s smaller than my Kohler unit, which is 24kW but is an 1800 RPM set also.

You can buy a brand-new Kohler 20kW set at Home Depot for under $6k.

Those are light-duty 3,600 RPM units. That 'Cummins' is 1,800 RPM, a whole

It's likely to be considerably quieter, both due to a better enclosure and the

They don’t, and I can say that without even looking. If it’s branded as a
Cummins (gas) engine, it’s most likely brand-labeled from another manufacturer.
That’s like my Kohler standby set saying it's got a Kohler engine in it when
it’s clearly a Toyota industrial engine and is branded accordingly. They all do
it.

Price-wise, with the 200A ATS it’s not far off for a commercial model - it was
probably around $25k new. It’s quite possible that it’s retained full warranty
status as it’s yet to be put into service. You would have to pay a Cummins
distributor or dealer to do the commissioning, but at least you would get a
full warranty on it then.

[MBZ] OT: 20kW Cummins genset never used - $20,000

2023-09-22 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I never knew Cummins made spark-ignition engines. Also seems to be extremely
expensive for a 20kW unit? You can buy a brand-new Kohler 20kW set at Home
Depot for under $6k.

Though this one appears to be a 3-phase rig with industrial transfer switch, so
not designed or priced for the consumer market.

That actually looks pretty decent. new pump is maybe $150 and easy to swap.

Re: [MBZ] Actual fuel economy on a 2014 E250 BlueTEC

2023-09-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I got my '85 190D 2.2l 5spd to 43mpg a couple times. The auto maxed out at 38.
That was a personal best for me until I got my first Jetta. Both the '98 and
'15 Jettas will easily do over 50mpg.
Angie's Golf will do high 40s.

Notice the difference in average speeds.
It appears that you get 1/4 more mpg when driving down the freeway from
the gas station than you do in your overall driving.

I had to chuckle when I saw the rusty muffler. This is a very common failure in
the older models’ mufflers, especially for cars that aren’t driven much. Water
collects at that rear seam on the bottom and it eventually rusts out. Whenever
I had a car like this I always drilled a small (1/8”) hole in the bottom of the
muffler right at the seam. It lets condensation drip out so the muffler doesn’t
