 I keep half an eye out for a set of staggered “Sport” wheels for the 
 CL600. These are 18” wheels, stock wheels being 17”, and they’re 
 staggered, too. I never realized the value of staggered wheels until I put 
 a set of them on Mrs. Dan’s former R129. That car drove like it was on

 The seller bodged up their response when someone asked about shipping, 
 which I believe “poisoned” the auction. They also didn’t seem to have a 
 good grasp of the language which may have also added to concerns. Add to 
 this it ended at 5:25 on a Friday before a three day holiday weekend, a 
 really, really poor time to be ending any auction.
 
 I established a limit ($800) as there is a $225 buyer’s fee (ouch!) as I 
 didn’t want to spend more than $1k for a good set of wheels. Obviously, 
 condition would play into my price as well. I sat back and watched. At the 
 end I bid up by the minimum increments ($50) after goofing up and doing 
 $100 on my first bid (grr!) I won the auction!
 
 Some observations:
 
 The notification emails for things like being outbid and winning the 
 auction were completely off as far as time. That is, I got the 
 notification email telling me I won the auction before I got the final bid 
 confirmation email. Strange. Same with an outbid notfication.
 
 I think the buyer’s fee ($225 minimum) is a bit steep. It’s a percentage 
 of the hammer price, but there is a minimum.
 
 Buyer has done a good job of communicating. They’re in Orlando, so I’m 
 meeting them tomorrow morning to close the deal. English is clearly not 
 their first language, but understanding that up front I’ve kept my 
 communication as basic as possible and things have been understood. Not 
 sure about the tires, definitely something cheap out of Southeast Asia, 
 but they’re new, so that has some value.
 
 Decent exaamples of these wheels sans tires are in the $300-$400 range, so 
 I definitely scored here. A good example of when things align just right 
 you can still find deals.

[MBZ] Benzing today on ML63

I was getting error codes that suggested rear wheel speed sensors were not 
working, and indeed on a drive up the driveway there was no rpm output showing. 
Weird both went bad. 

This drove the transmission into limp mode with an error that transmission 
output speed was not matching wheel speed. Makes sense, but it’s crazy how 
connected these things are. 

I got new wheel speed sensors on it this afternoon (Amazon delivered today, 
might have been USPS) and I was getting good speed signals on all 4 wheels and 
they matched. Had the computer hooked up monitoring it all. Cleared all codes 
and went for a drive. Was doing well up to 35mph or so, trans shifted up to 
maybe into 3rd gear then went into limp mode again with same error about 
turbine output speed not matching wheel speed. Was getting a good transmission 
speed output too and all the other speeds inside were showing so I don't think 
it's a conductor plate fault. I'm thinking it has to be a software issue with 
the mismatch.

I talked to my buddy Todd who had flashed the new conductor plate and actually 
reflashed the whole vehicle some weeks ago. I’m thinking something in the 
software is wonky such that the trans and wheel speeds are not specifically for 
this vehicle, or that it was corrupted somehow. He’s going to dial into it 
tomorrow and see what might be wrong. Maybe reflash it all again. 

I could feel the engine just wanting to run hard, this thing is incredibly 
powerful. Can’t wait to get this issue sorted and go ripping around in it.

[MBZ] Broken bolts

[Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes]

Had one of the bolts break on the GL oil cooler job. It’s for the egr tube on 
the back of the turbo. One thing I suck at and hate doing is drilling out holes 
and tapping them. In always afraid I’m going to screw it it up worse than it 
was. 

First attempt was stud remover but not enough of the bolt was sticking up. Next 
was left hand drill bits and easy out. This did not work and ended up breaking 
off not one but 2 left handed drill bits in the hole. Using regular drill bits 
ran down the hole I was able to get the broken bits out. Just now I drilled the 
hole completely and tapped it. Appears to be a success. The shiny bolt is the 
tapped hole.  I always feel great when I actually get one repaired successfully.

My 2003 ML350 has metal (switchblade) keys, I'm sure his 2004 does also.
If there's only one key/fob, try to find a place that can cut you a

Unless you want to drive I-10 through New Mexico, you will have to take
I-40. If you do take I-40, you will drive right past me, 5 miles east of
Moriarty,

Weather looks like it will be good mid week, as there are some parts of I-40 through the mountains in WNC and ETN that can be challenging if weather gets rough. With all the heavy lifting done by Floyd and Floyd’s daughter’s BF, I pulled the trigger and bought this. It was as represented, the Car Fax was a thing of beauty (having been a CPO at one point in its life), and the seller was responsive , respectful and honorable.  Plans are to fly standby into CLT tomorrow (when it seems no one else is flying), rent a car and take a leisurely drive down to Greenville/Spartanburg and check into a Marriott.
