[MBZ] In other news -- 12GL450 Airmatic

2024-01-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This thing was slammed, happened a few weeks back so it has been
sitting. Was not clear what the issue was.  Appeared to be an issue with
rear bags so I ordered 2 new ones and put them on.  RR was not holding
air, LR appeared to have air.  Did not solve the problem.  DAS was
saying the air line to the reservoir or the line was not right, or the
pressure sensor was bad, or something not specific.

So I ordered a "new" used reservoir off ebay which was a double tank
whereas the one on the vehicle was a single tank.  I guess someone had
thrown one on there at some point in the past. Still had the problem,
same error code with the pressure sensor and the reservoir was not
pressurizing or holding pressure, so I ordered an airline going to it
from the valve block and put that on. Still no joy and same error code
which was puzzling, and tank was not holding pressure.

I ran tests using DAS and kept coming back to this problem.  I broke
down and ordered a cheap pump and valve block off Amazon and put them
in, and put the original air line back on the valve block.  The old
valve block was some no-name thing kinda like the new one I put on.  I
had the right side jacked up and the lower arms sitting on blocks so I
could have the front tire off and get to the reservoir in the rear
(under the vehicle).  That at least would allow the system to pump up
thinking the tires were on the ground.  I was still getting the same
error code, and it did appear to be pumping up but not correctly.  This
was very strange as aside from the front struts everything was new.

So today I just decided to put the front wheel back on and drop the
right side back down on the ground and see what happens.  I put the
computer on it so I could watch what it would do, and LO!  I started it,
the pump was pumping, the vehicle was raising, and everything was
showing good with no faults.  I did an automatic level calibration using
DAS and everything seems to be sitting comfortably now.  Halluhlooyuh!!!
Yay me!

I have to take the RF wheel off again to get the pump and valve block
back in their places and bolted down and put the liner back on, that
should be good for now.  So, a success there it seems.  In doing some
research it appears the pressure sensor I was getting errors for is
inside the valve block on this vehicle.  Not sure why it was showing a
fault after I put in the new one but it had no faults today so I'm
calling it good.

The rear tires are at end of life so I will need to get another pair
soon.  Fronts are 1 new and 1 mostly new so those are good.  The idler
pulley is making rude noises so I ordered 2 new ones to have a spare,
will get that replaced when they get here.  My daughter had one let go
on their Christmas trip, left them dead but managed to get a new one and
tools to replace it and the belt that was completely shredded.  Don't
want that to happen (I had that happen on the ML500, luckily I was just
up the road when it let go and made it home OK).

Anyway, fun times Benzing on the Vast Estate.  One FAIL and one SUCCESS

Re: [MBZ] W163 License Plate Fasteners FUBAR

2024-01-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Two viable options:
Drill out the broken bolts, then increase the drill size [if you have a
number drill set slip up on it one drill size at a time until the outer
flange of the rivnut cuts off the internal compressed body, which should
leave you with a clean hole in the sheet metal, minimal paint damage.
Then, replace the seized / broken bolt rivnut with a new one. [have a look
at Temu.. search "rivnut tool" and "rivnuts" for a cheap tool that works
well.
Or..
Go to local FLAPS and pick up 4 nylon license plate inserts , pop them in
place, put new license plate screws in and never deal with rusted / broken
license plate bolts again.. [should cost less than $5 for the set].
The nylon inserts are hidden behind the license plate, so no one will ever
know until you tell them..

If they are rivet nuts, you'll have to chisel the outside lip so that it can be
pushed through. Get some touch up paint to clean up any damage and pop in new

[MBZ] well bugger. 07E350...

2024-01-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So this car I got for [$400] if I account for what I had in the $600 (+
maybe $300 for the trans conductor plate fix) 99E320 I traded, and the
woman gave me $500.  It was spinning but not lighting off.  My buddy
Todd put on another ECU because the one on the car somehow thought it
was for a V8 which was weird, but whatever.  We messed with it a bit and
it would spin then after a bit not spin, starter seemed like it went
bad.  He gave me another starter he had laying around and I just
finished putting it on the car.  (it was not a very pleasant job, had to
remove exhaust pipe, O2 sensors, etc. to get at it and it was incredibly
tight up in there, but I managed)

So I threw a battery in and hit the start and... clunk.  And... clunk.
Bugger.  So I went and found a big socket and put it on the crank and...
nothing.  No spinnie, no turnie...  I guess it is locked up.  Bugger.

This is kinda weird as it was spinning fine when I picked it up and when
we were messing with it until it seemed like the starter had quit. No
cam codes or timing issues showing which is what you see when these
engines jump timing due to the balance shaft sprocket wearing down.  I
think there might be some way to get a borescope in there to look at it,
I remember seeing something about that.

So anyway, it is a nice car other than the engine likely being trashed,
which is kind of a surprise since it seemed to be spinning OK.  But not
a lot of $$$ into it, I will look for another engine and pop it in.
