Re: [MBZ] KLEB CAR!!!!

2024-01-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have ridden in a few Pintos starting in the early 1980’s. The first one was
my sister’s then boyfriend’s 1972 runabout with a manual transmission. It was a
good first car for him. Not long afterward, my dad got the Pinto bug and found
a 1974 Pinto Wagon with no engine. The plan was to put a 1962 Ford Galaxy 260
V8 engine into it, but he couldn’t obtain a title. He then found a 1972 Pinto
wagon 2.0l automatic with a wrecked front end. The now parts car had everything
needed to restore the wreck to family car status. My two older sisters had
moved out, so the much larger 1975 Grand Torino wagon was sold off for some
extra money and replaced by the fuel sipping Pinto. Mom didn’t really care to
drive my youngest sister and I around in a brown and wood panel Pinto wagon
with a blue front end, but she did it for well over a year until Dad found his
next car, a 1971 Buick boat tail Riviera. Nearly 20 years later in around 2000,
Dad got the Pinto bug once again and found a 1978 Pinto wagon, orange with a
primer front end. After test driving it, Mom asked “you aren’t going to buy
that ugly thing, are you?” $200 later, Dad and I were rolling down the road in
the old Pinto. After Dad replaced the timing belt and I installed the new cat
converter, it ran even better! Then, about a year later, he found a $500, much
better looking 1979 Bobcat. We put new ball joints and suspension bushings on
it and bombed it around until the next one popped up, a 1980 Pinto Wagon with
80K original miles! All of these were the later 2.3L engines with manual
transmissions. It was the nicest of all of them. My guide dog, Joel didn’t like
getting into these old Pintos, and he would slide around in the back no matter
what kind of mats we tried. Then, we found a much more suitable vehicle, a 1987
Voyager van. Joel had the back seat all to himself, but he wasn’t truly
comfortable until I took the leap and purchased our first Diesel Mercedes, a
1978 300D. He would lie on the back seat with his head facing the passenger
rear door, and he would rest his chin on the door armrest and go to sleep with
his nose poking forward between the door panel and the grab handle. I wish he
would have made his automotive tastes known much sooner!!!

Now, come on - it wasn't that bad. It was actually quite stylish
compared to the 4 door and it had a decent cloth interior with bucket seats.

It was quite enjoyable to drive and I would have kept it much longer
except for the fact that the one I had did not have undercoating of any
sort and had been subjected to road salt in the winters before I got it
from my mother.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Paragon Tires

2024-01-12 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
This is sort of funny, as the MLs have wheels/tires that look almost as comical
as the old 14” bundts on the W126 sedans did, too. My ML550 is the same - even
with the optional 19” wheels and tires they still look lost in the wheel wells.

Sort of like the deal with the monoblocks I bought in Orlando last week -
they’re 18” staggered wheels, 8.5” in the front, 9.5” in the rear, but they put
the same profile tire on all four wheels. Since the diameter is the same, no
foul, but how does this affect performance? Less contact area? That’s what I’m
thinking is a possibility, but even so, it has to be marginal at best.

I pointed out that any cheap crap car you buy today will last 10 years and
200,000 miles with just basic maintenance while "Those good cars" were junk at
5-7 years.

For example, my folks bought a brand new Mercury Lynx (Ford Escort) in 1983. By
1988 it was junk, the body had rusted "to the windshield" as they say in Maine.
The engine would quit every time you drove in the rain. It'd start and go fine
for about 5 minutes, then just quit. Roll to a stop, wait 5 minutes and it was
good to go the rest of the day. "Good car" my ass.

Of course my dad has the absolute worst taste in cars. He had (in no particular

Whereas my 1976 Chevette - purchased at full list price of $3660 - lasted
with no real issues for 7 years.  Sold it to the trash guys for $350 and we
purchased our first Mercedes, a 1973 280, for $4700.  Sold the 280 a year
later for $4850.

Higher aspect ratio is taller.

245/65R17 is what he put on.

245 mm width
245 * 0.65 = 159.25 mm height
17 * 25.4 + 2(159.25) = 750.3 mm overall diameter (29.54")

Everything I read I read says either
255/60R17

255 mm width
255 * 0.60 = 153 mm height
17 * 25.4 + 2(153) = 737.8 mm overall diameter (29.047")

or 275/55R17.

275 mm width
275 * 0.55 = 151.25 mm height
17 * 25.4 + 2(151.25) = 734.3 mm overall diameter (28.91")

One could use the above information to figure speedometer error,
but it would be best to go to manufacturers' websites to find the
"revs per mile" for each tire.

Re: [MBZ] more on sunroofs

2024-01-12 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
In my haste to go over the ML550 when I considered it for purchase, I forgot to
check the sunroof operation. After purchasing it and going over things in
general, I discovered that it didn’t work. Not a big deal to me as I never use
a sunroof when I have one. I like the W163s because they have wing windows in
the back, I use those all the time.

Anyway, I started digging around as I had to replace the upper console because
the plastic had gotten brittle on it. I found the sunroof motor unplugged, so I
plugged it in and could hear it turning in both directions when I moved the
switch. But - the sunroof either didn’t or just barely moved.

Long story short, the geartrain, which is nylon or plastic, has grenaded. And
even better, the sunroof mechanism/frame/etc. and all, is ONE ASSEMBLY.

When I last checked the price it was about $1,000 my cost from the dealer. Add
to the fun, the headliner has to come out. But! I needed a new headliner
anyway, and my upholstery shop is about three blocks from the dealership.

NOPE.

I used a hex driver to get the sunroof panel properly adjusted to avoid any
wind noise and left the motor disconnected. Still planning my headliner
replacement in February, but that’s it. No replacement sunroof mechanism.

I had a 1977 Mercury Monarch 2 dr. It looked nice - White with a white
half vinyl top and the opera windows. Red interior - bucket seats etc.
We bought it new and kept it a long time but it was not a great car. The
Zephyr I referred to earlier was better in many ways. It was a few years
newer and had rack and pinion steering and handled quite well.

The Monarch handled poorly. It had the old style power steering with the
hydraulic cylinder attached to the linkage rather than the newer style
with the actual power steering box. I think I rebuilt the linkage where
the cylinder attached to a ball type joint 3 times. The rest of the car
was OK. The engine and transmission were fine and it did not rust badly.
It was just not much fun to drive.

Now, come on - it wasn't that bad. It was actually quite stylish
compared to the 4 door and it had a decent cloth interior with bucket seats.

It was quite enjoyable to drive and I would have kept it much longer
except for the fact that the one I had did not have undercoating of any

from my mother.

My co-worker at the USGS bought a new 1977 Ford Maverick, to go with his
1976 TR7. Both cars were absolute POSes (POSs?).

Whereas my 1976 Chevette - purchased at full list price of $3660 - lasted
with no real issues for 7 years. Sold it to the trash guys for $350 and we
purchased our first Mercedes, a 1973 280, for $4700. Sold the 280 a year
later for $4850.

My father had the Mercury version - A Bobcat. Bright red, black interior
- automatic which meant it was pretty weak.
I think it was still around when my father died. I don't know what
happened to it. Mother must have sold it or given it away to clear the
yard. It was not a wonderful car but my father always liked good fuel
mileage.

The Ford Fairmont was not awful. One of the car magazines (Car & Driver,
maybe) said it was akin to a domestic Volvo. Very simple car. My father
had the 2 door Mercury version - a 1983 Zephyr - inline 200 CID 6 - two
tone grey with a red interior. It was new when he died and my mother
learned to drive on it as she had never had a licence. She later gave it
to me and I drove if for about 6 months. Unfortunately it came with no
undercoating on it and it was rusting something fierce underneath. The
body and interior did not look like it had ever been used but the bottom

Re: [MBZ] KLEB CAR!!!!

2024-01-12 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Hi everyone, my name is Dan and I’m a former Pinto owner.

< Hi, Dan! >

Mom got a brand-new 1971-1/2 Pinto full window hatchback, bright orange with
the great 2.0l 4 cylinder engine, four-speed stick, from the local Ford dealer.
She drove it uneventfully until about 1977 or so. Then it went to my older
brother, who is the antithesis of a “car guy”. On a night out with the guys
from the office, while inebriated, he drove it the wrong way down a one-way
street in downtown Indianapolis, and upon realizing his direction conflicted
with traffic, he made a hard turn. Into a 12” concrete curb.

Fast forward to around 1980. I’m recently married, going to school full time,
and working, too. Mrs. Dan is working as well, but like most young couples,
we’re scraping by. For reasons I don’t recall, I needed a car. Brother has
bought a Ford Fairmont (yeah, I laughed when I heard that, too!) and did not
need the Pinto, so it comes to me for some consideration to big brother.

I drive it for about a month and almost go through a set of front tires. ?

Take it to Church Brothers, a very good body and frame shop in Indianapolis.
The verdict is that the frame is tweaked from a hard hit in the right front
corner (that concrete curb did not yield.) Cost me $200 and a day for them to
put the car on their unibody alignment rack, and it was as good as new. I went
to the Powers That Be, our Dad, and pleaded my case, as in big brother knew the
car was defective but sold it to me anyway without disclosing the damage. Dad
ruled in my favor, so big brother had to reimburse me for the repairs. Yeah!

I drove it for a couple of years. Great car, very reliable, certainly spartan,
and economical as heck. The 2000cc engine was a great mill, very popular
amongst the rally Ford Capri crowd, as they were used in Capris of the same
vintage. I polished and ported the head and intake, even placing some baffles
in the intake plenum to enhance airflow. It ran quite well.

Ford chased me down for the recall on the gas tank not long before I got rid of
it. Don’t recall the details, but I know I had no problems selling it at the
time.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Paragon Tires

2024-01-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I thought the higher aspect ratio was "taller"?

So a 65R17 would be taller (larger external diameter) than a 60 or 55R17.

This means your speedo/odo readings will be slightly low, also.

And 245 is a narrower tire than the others. That will theoretically give you
better snow performance by putting more weight on the contact patch, but worse
dry grip since the contact patch is smaller.

I'm not sure any of that is worth replacing brand-new tires.

[MBZ] more on sunroofs

2024-01-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
My elder son has a late model Toyota Rav4. Not certain of year but
essentially new. They bought it new, had to wait for one to come in to
the dealer and have had it maybe a year or a bit more.

Back in maybe October, the glass in the sunroof broke.  They initially
thought it might be vandalism, but it is likely just one of those cases
where glass decides to blow.

They finally were able to get it fixed in December. Glass places
wouldn't touch it - said it was too complex. The dealer had to do it but
there were no available parts. They finally got the parts. Apparently,
the glass cannot be replaced and the whole unit has to be changed out.

Insurance covered it to the tune of $7,500.

I don't like a sunroof anyway but this is just one more reason to avoid
them.

Re: [MBZ] 2021 AMG GT 63 - 26k miles - $85,000

2024-01-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Could be but those things have depreciated fast.  It looks like a fodo
too so that reduces the value.  For the year I would expect it to be
quite a bit more,  2016-2017 coupés (actual tudors) are going high 60s
to 70s, some pushing 80, but depending on any issues this might not be
unrealistic.  My buddy bought his 2016 for low 50s, it had been a lemon
buyback for what appeared to be kinda nonsense reasons, but it went to
auction and got bought cheap. Todd basically rebuilt the whole thing
anyway and has added a lot of the tech that was on 2021 and later cars
so it is a bit of a Frahnkenschteen car but has 1100hp (detuned) and the
drivetrain to handle it.

It would be interesting to see if that one is actually available or not.

I've never heard of them. But I would not call myself a student of tire

If they are quiet and do well in the wet and snow, that's better than most of

Sunroofs are best kept shut and left alone. They will probably leak eventually

2024-01-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A friend of a friend had a Pinto back in the day. The story goes that it was
the most gutless, slowest piece of trash he had ever driven.

So the day comes to replace it, the dealer won't take the Pinto on trade so he
decides to junk it. On the ride to the junkyard he decides, since its being
junked anyway, to just peg it to redline the whole way.
After a few minutes there is some kind of a poof, bang or maybe explosion,
stories differ but suddenly the car runs waay better. A few minutes later a
big cloud of black shoots out the exhaust pipe and the car runs even better,
better than it has the whole time the guy has owned it. All the power a Pinto
could possibly have.

Literally blew the carbon out...

IIRC instead of junking it he sells it to one of his buddies, I don't remember
exactly.
