That looks like the W110 I pulled out of the muck in the coastal hills south of 
San Francisco (La Honda) when we rescued the 1962 300SE.

I needed glass for the 300SE, as all but the driver’s window had been broken 
out. I called a glass place in Redwood City that specialized in older cars, 
figuring worst case I could get flat glass for the door windows, at least. I’m 
talking to the glass guy, telling him what I’m looking for. He interrupts me 
and says, hey, do you know if it’s the same glass as a - (insert W110 
model/year here, I don’t recall the details)? I didn’t know, so I told him I 
would check and get back to him. I called Randy Steele in Santa Barbara and he 
confirmed that all W110/111/112 glass is interchangeable.

I call the glass guy back and confirm. He tells me that there is a car as 
described parked next to his parent’s house in La Honda, a “restoration” of his 
dad’s that went off the rails decades ago. His mom wants it gone. He calls Mom, 
calls me back, and says it’s free for the taking. Score!!

So on that Saturday, I drive over to LaHonda from Milpitas with Al Lumas’ ranch 
hand in his 3/4 ton dually pickup and a trailer. No big deal, right?

If you don’t know the climate(s) on the peninsula, you’re about to be 
enlightened. LaHonda sits right at the very top of the ridge of hills, really, 
small mountains, that divide the Pacific coast from the San Francisco Bay. 
We’ve all seen the huge walls of fog rolling across the Golden Gate, which 
happens very predictably on an almost daily basis depending on the time of 
year. Those same moisture-laden winds are also coming in from the Pacific Ocean 
all along the coast, which is nice and chilly. When they climb the slopes of 
those mountains/hills, the uplift causes water to precipitate out and get 
dumped on the land below.

In other words, think tropical rainforest only about 40-50 degrees (F) colder, 
and very windy.

The car was stuck in the Earth up to its axles next to the house. It was clear 
it had been there for years. Here is the farmhand pulling it onto the trailer 
with one of the come-alongs we used to get it out of the muck. Notice how foggy 
it is? That’s the glass guy in the dark jacket.

No. The W163 never used that engine, only the original (3.2l) and bored-out 
(3.5l) M112. So that’s an M112. Safe buy, excellent engine.

Possibly not. Like it’s later cousin, the W164, the W163 had issues with power 
steering pump reservoirs, so much so that I am almost sure all the dealers 
still stock them. They do for the W164s with the M273, because I just ordered 
one for mine and they had it on the shelf. I’ve done them on M112s in the W163, 
it’s a quick and easy job.

We had a 1982 AMC Eagle which was the perfect vehicle for winters in the high 
desert of Central Oregon. It was a rare Manny Tranny 5 speed with the 
relatively gutless 4.2L 258CID in-line 6 cylinder engine. Shortly after we 
bought it, the rear main seal began to leak profusely with oil leaking onto the 
exhaust and causing the clutch to chatter. Then, it jumped time, so we had to 
have the timing chain replaced along with the clutch and the rear main seal. 
After that, it ran very well! It had working AC. I changed the shocks, u-joints 
and hatch struts on it. About a  year later, my nephew needed a car, so my 
parents decided to give it to him. He somehow managed to kill it by getting the 
tranny stuck between two gears. It certainly wasn’t a race car,  but it could 
get you just about anywhere you wanted to go in late 1970’s-early 1980’s 
comfort.
