Re: [MBZ] 123 Tires and OT Truck Tire Questions

Funny thing is, the car loves it, or appears to. She’s driven the 97 SL500 for
nearly 70k, and despite being a reconstructed title, that car has been one of
the most trouble free vehicles I’ve ever owned.

This looks like it could be a nice deal. I kid you not, if you’ve owned a
W124/300E and want the same rock solid chassis with bad*ss performance, you
want a 400E or E420. Lots of smiles per mile.

2021-01-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Actually, they had a developer’s API that was coded by a 10 year old that
allowed some European hackers to access the stored data even after their rights
got pulled. They were able to download a significant amount of message traffic
with user names and other identifying data. Interestingly, Parler did not scrub
metadata on pictures or other such things, so EXIF and other goodies
identifying the devices and their locations were ripe for the picking, so to
speak.

Not to pick nits, but Parlor wasn’t “banned” from Amazon Web Services (AWS),
they were “de-platformed”. That’s essentially when your (cloud) service
provider turns off the switch. Amazon said they violated their terms of
service, so they turned it off.

Same results, though.

They’re back, as in they now have a hosting provider who is hosting their
domain, but that’s a far cry from having a web service provider. You can have
all the domains you want, but if there’s nowhere to host your content, you’re
pretty much SOL.

Signal was/is considered a major threat to intelligence collection in the NSA
and CIA. There are direct references to this in a number of the slide decks
that Snowden exposed, and the FBI in particular has continued to clutch it’s
pearls to Congress and the DOJ over it’s use by private citizens. It’s open

Price is a bit high with the miles. Only thing that could overcome this would

Wife's Mazda 6 was like that. Feather on the throttle and you were zoom-zooming

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E (W124)

2021-01-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You’re thinking 500SEL as in W126.

The W124 500E was built from 1991 through 1195, I believe. Porsche was involved
in some of the design and assembly, in fact, the cars were finished at the
Porsche factory. M119 5.0 liter engine, SLS, different suspension and fenders
were flared out. There may have been other things but that’s the main
take-aways.

For a Mercedes part, Google “mercedes” and the part number, no spaces.

Google “bosch” and “1427133094” and you’ll get hits on the Bosch part.

Re: [MBZ] Mixing tires?

2021-01-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If they’re the same you should be OK. I don’t know if the nannies on the later
models are that discriminating, but the tires that were on my 1999 E320 4Matic
were totally mismatched and had far different wear levels/patterns, and I never
had any indication that it cared.

Definitely one of the things I do on a “new to me” car maintenance list. All
fluids get replaced. That way I have a point of reference.

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We’re using a centralized registration system by CDR Maguire. They’re doing it
at the state level across the country as well. We’ve been told that the state
is going to take over all aspects of the distribution and vaccination in the
next week or two and establish one site in the county to handle everything,
both testing and vaccinations. This will be good for us, as we’ve been handling
everything within the county across multiple sites since this started. It’s
been a logistical and staffing nightmare for us.

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

2021-01-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We had a groomed cross country ski course at a state park just a few miles away
form our home in WI. On Friday nights they had “candlelight skiing”, which had
a bonfire at the parking area for the non-participants and luminaries (? -
paper bags with the votive candles) placed along the trails every 20-30 feet or
so by the park rangers.

My standard getup was jogging pants, a t-shirt, all covered with an Army field
coat that went down to my knees. It was also referred to as my “Captain
Kangaroo” coat because it had large, square pockets on the front that were
ideal for holding bottles of cold, locally produced adult beverages, usually
from Sprecker. As I would push along the bottles would jingle in my pockets,
scaring off the local wildlife but alerting fellow skiiers that I possessed
libations. Every quarter mile or so there would be a park bench, which we would
sit on to take a short rest and consume said libations.

This is one of the examples of the excellent quality of life that exists in WI.

Few people who haven’t done it don’t understand how difficult and physical
cross country skiing is. I took it up when we lived in WI, and I will say that
it's right up there with workouts like spinning - and that’s when you’re on

The first time I tried it I was appropriately bundled for the weather, with a
Carhart snowmobile suit and such. Within a short time I had stripped that off

Re: [MBZ] NC Covid shots

In some areas, yes. Pinellas and Pasco counties (west and north of Tampa) have
large numbers of retirees. Hillsborough County, which is Tampa, has far lower
numbers. One of the issues is people from adjoining counties attempting to
register for vaccinations here. They’ve gotten pissy when they’re turned down
as the system looks at their address to determine eligibility.

My mother in law registered in Hillsborough County because Pasco’s efforts were
a cluster. I told her she would get turned down when her application came up on
the list, but of course she didn’t want to hear that…

The distribution and management of vaccinations here in Florida has been
nothing short of a cluster, mainly because the state (and Federal government)
has left it up to the counties to administer, with little to no guidance on how
it should be done. I can’t get into the specifics for my county, but suffice to
say, the term “clown show” was used by one of our county commissioners in
describing the initial efforts.

Our IT group got involved after the initial debacle and engaged a national firm
who is working with the states to handle the scheduling and distribution, and
now things are going far more smoothly and without incident. The issue now is
the lack of vaccine, as we’ve got far less than we need to distribute to the
groups that are identified as needing it.

Re: [MBZ] Rock Auto Windshield wipers

2021-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
HA HA HA HA!

“Dealer discounts” are often a total screw. They’ll quote you list plus 20% and
then give you a 10% “courtesy discount” to make you feel like you’re getting a
deal.

They all do it, even mine. I caught them doing it to a coworker one time. He
bought a neighbor’s SLK230 for one of his kids. He asks me about doing an oil
change on the car, and I told him it’s relatively straightforward, but to buy a
filter from the dealer, not FLAPS. His kid calls the dealer’s parts counter and
hey quote him $18. Now I know darned well the oil filter for an SLK230 is not
$18 list, so I told him to ride along with me at lunch one day when I went to
pick up parts.

We get to the dealer and I told him to go up to the counter in front of me. He
asks for the part, they look it up, and quote him $14. I stepped up and
questioned the parts guy. “Really? That’s a $12 filter, list price.” They sold
it to him for $10, the jobber (my) price, because they got caught trying to
scam the guy.

As crappy a practice as this is, there’s nothing illegal about it. There is
certainly an ethical issue here, but again, this is a car dealer. List price is
nothing more than reference point for discounting, and is not a retail or fixed
price. The dealer can charge whatever they want for a part, as Mercedes cannot
set the retail price, only the price the dealer pays them.

1992, one of the worst years of the W140. Pretty rare interior color, but boy,
is that driver’s seat thrashed! It’s a short wheelbase version, too.

And no “emmisions” testing, either!

Yes. 2005-2006 E320 CDIs are the ones.

[MBZ] W210 Side View Mirrors

2021-01-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If you’ve got a W210 chassis car you may very well have a broken mirror or one
that’s in bad shape. The internal “hook” that the spring that holds the mirror
tight to the frame often breaks, making the mirror flop around like a fish or
allows it to vibrate while you’re driving. The OE mirror is NLA I believe, and
if not, it’s stupid expensive.

I found a seller on eBay who offers both exterior side view mirrors that are a
direct replacement of the stock mirror with full adjustment and heated glass.
The cover comes with it so you can paint it to match your car, or just use the
stock cover you already have.

https://tinyurl.com/y5w3gk6z

https://tinyurl.com/yy964dob

I bought these for my 1999 E320 4Matic and they both fit and work perfectly.

Another reason why I just buy them for the stealership. Yeah, they’re more

work about them fitting or having a pile of little plastic adapter things I

Depends. While I would agree with your observations, my cars are garaged when
not in use, so the elements tend to not degrade things as much as if they were
outside more. I would have to go look at maintenance records, but I would guess
they last at least a year if not longer. Probably more like 18 months.

Good guess, Rick. That’s a likely candidate.

I don’t know about the later models, but as Rick described, brake light
switches are cheap as wine for W210s and earlier, possibly later models as
well. While I doubt Wilton or Mrs. Wilton would be flexible enough to replace
one, it can’t be a terribly expensive job at the dealer or shop. It’s not hard
to do, but involves having to get under the driver’s side dash, which even for
us younger folks isn’t easy.

Good to hear from you, Wilton! I was thinking of you recently while watching

My father in law was a hard core morel mushroom hunter, and had his “special
places” where they grew that he guarded carefully. Allen lives in such areas
and probably has people around him hunting them as well. Father in law did a
lot of his hunting in the Ninevah and Camp Atterbury (IN) areas, where he grew

He would go out on a Saturday and come back a few hours later with a big basket

I’m betting a cracked or leaking seal on the gas cap. If it’s the original, I
would replace it just out of concern, as they’re cheap.

Those are always fun.

Toss your DAS on it and see what codes are stored. At least that way you’ll

Re: [MBZ] carpet cleaning methods

2021-01-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I picked one of these up from the rich people’s neighborhood Facebook
Marketplace group for $20 about a year ago:

https://www.bissell.com/little-green-portable-carpet-cleaner-1400B.html
<https://www.bissell.com/little-green-portable-carpet-cleaner-1400B.html>

Works great with their cleaning solution. Nice, small, very portable, easy to
operate and clean. I still might spot clean nasty stuff like grease or coffee
with some Tuff Stuff spray foam first, but this carpet cleaner does a great job
otherwise.

Yeah, I ran through the video at 2x and didn’t have the audio on or I would
have caught that… I’m still amazed at the amount of liquid he uses, though.

Does he identify what he’s using on the cordless drill that looks like a
polishing pad? I was wondering what that was.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 2007 Mercedes Benz ML 320 CDI 4WD Sport SUV - $3, 500 (OBO) - Phoenix

2021-01-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
What Floyd says.

If you’re not going to do most of the work yourself, it would be a waste of
money to invest in a STAR system. One of the cheaper handheld things can be
helpful in narrowing problems down and making sure your mechanic doesn’t try
and extract his monthly boat payment from you.

A properly equipped and configured STAR system will work on MBs from the mid
1990s to at least 2012-2014. One other advantage is that in some of the later
models, like the W211s, it also allows you to enable features that are
otherwise locked down by the factory. However, that’s some high level stuff and
not a place to be tinkering.

Re: [MBZ] carpet cleaning methods

2021-01-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Curt, are you talking about the steam wand thingy he was using?

I looked at the video - I was amazed at how much liquid he used when cleaning
stuff. It was like he was flooding the carpets. That would take forever to dry,
even with vacuuming the bulk of the liquid out.

Maybe he doesn’t worry about it since it would freeze in a short time after it
leaves his shop?

Re: [MBZ] carpet cleaning methods

2021-01-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have found the best stuff for spot cleaning is a spray foam at Wally Whirled
call “Tuff Stuff”. It’s cheap and does a great job of removing stains by
spraying and using a stiff brush to work it into the carpet fibers.

Interesting that I can buy it off the shelf at the store yet the web site only
shows it as being available from third party sellers.

The rental thing wouldn’t be any better, IMHO. If your existing carpet cleaner

I’ve got a little one for doing cars and one thing I’ve found to be helpful is

In Florida it has to go to a state inspection station for a complete
inspection, which takes about 2-4 hours, after which (assuming it passes) they
brand the car with a special VIN sticker on the "A" pillar post.

Re: [MBZ] And the price keeps dropping...

2021-01-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I went back and looked at my files, and I was not 100% correct:

Tarek’s W140 had a “rebuilt” title from NC, which Florida would recognize as a
“regular” car. As far as Florida is concerned, if the state designated the car
as rebuilt it’s roadworthy and no different than any other car on the road.

My “rebuilt” title on the SL500 is due to the PO buying the car as salvage from
the insurance company and getting a rebuilt title when the car was made
roadworthy. In Florida, a salvage title brands a car as being unroadworthy and
it’s not legal to drive or insure it. You have to get the car inspected by the
state to assure it’s roadworthy, then a rebuilt title is issued.

If you get a car with a salvage title in Florida it’s a parts car or destined
for dismantling. It cannot be (legally) driven on the roads. When an insurance
company totals a car, they have to apply for a salvage title to have it
dismantled.

2021-01-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not to my knowledge. I’ve got a reconstructed/rebuilt car (1997 SL500) and it’s
clearly identified as such on the title. I’ve seen the same on salvage vehicles
I’ve owned here. The one thing that is weird is that if you bring a salvage car
in from out of state it’s not identified as such on the title, but it is in the
DMV records and that information gets transmitted to any other state that the
car is titled in.

Florida’s attitude towards cars like this is appears to be that if another
state deemed it roadworthy, they’ll title it. The record isn’t “washed”
however, the information is still there and visible to anyone who wants to look
it up or inquire.

Re: [MBZ] And the price keeps dropping...

2021-01-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s what will happen to the 1999 E320 4Matic at some point.

Whether or not it’s viable to buy here and move the cars north is questionable,
as the costs involved to transport them, whether doing it yourself or some
other way, would negate a lot of any potential profit I would think. CarMax
wouldn’t do anything this old, but I”m sure they do it with later model cars as
well as cars like convertibles.

When I used to go to the Mannheim auctions you would see truckloads of
convertibles shipped to Florida from their PA location in the wintertime. No
market for them up north in the winter, so move them to FL where there’s a
year-round market.

I want a smaller truck and drivetrain, not a full sized model. I don’t care
about being able to haul a 4x8 piece of plywood or tow a massive trailer. I’m
wondering if any of the other domestic manufacturers have decent small trucks?

I will say that the Nissan Frontier is just as pricey. For grins I looked at

2021-01-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You must be psychic.

I started looking at them just the other day as a retirement vehicle. And yes,
they’re stupid expensive.

If you’re shopping on price, you’ll want to go for the basic four cylinder,
standard cab 2WD model, of which I found very few. Even ones from the early
2000s are bringing big bucks with reasonable mileage. Add the larger cab and
4WD and he price goes up exponentially.

I had forgotten about the Nissan equivalent, which would be just as good for
me, so I’m going to start researching those as well.

I had a spare set of aluminum wheels for one of the Focii, as the youngest had

One often missed item is the bushing that seals the vacuum line to the vacuum

Re: [MBZ] Jaguar XKE coupe project car

2021-01-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I once did a complete mechanical restoration on a 1966 E-type coupe.
Blueprinted and balanced the engine, rebuilt carbs, etc., etc. An amazing car
to drive when sorted. Loads and loads of fun. The best were the V12s, but from
a performance standpoint they weren’t that great, as it added a lot of weight
to the front end. The 3.8 was a good engine, but repower one with the later 4.2
liter inline six and you had a serious race car.

I’ll never forget the first V12 XJ we had in the shop, a 1976 silver with
maroon interior. Stunningly beautiful car. I drove it home one night, and was
stunned that on a road that was 30 mph, which I thought I was doing, I was
actually going about 60 mph! The ride was amazing, there was no indication of
speed it was so smooth.
