Re: [MBZ] bio diesel

2019-08-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Randy, my understanding is the B5 or B10 has sufficient bio-diesel to
improve lubricity "enough" so that should no longer be a concern.

One pump local to me is B20 now, and another is either B20 or maybe B5,
haven't been to that one in a bit.

Bio-diesel has lower energy content compared to #2 pump diesel, so there is
a trade off of few MPG.

The mast needs to connect to something inside the antenna motor assembly,
but it should not require any work beyond getting the mast down in there
far enough. Maybe you need to open it up and allow the mast to go down a
little further by manipulating the plastic tail and the gear it engages?

Here's the thread I was thinking about, should give you a good idea.
722.315, the guy used both ATSG manual and the WIS for section 27 of the
FSM, plus a couple others he downloaded.

Here is another for an older trans, 722.118, which may have some value
beyond education. Stretch does some courageous things and he's very good
at fabricating special tools.

Re: [MBZ] test

2019-08-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Also, I was hoping that your "aardvark" word document was another story
from your career, miss those and I'm too frugal to buy the book.

Reminds me, this summer we traveled to Italy again, and one of the museums
we visited was in Castelforte, and covered the impact of WW2 in that area.
Very fierce fighting there between Germans and Allies (U.S. Army, Brits of
course, and French forces) along the Gustav line. Reportedly more civilian
deaths caused by land mines than all casualties on both sides caused by the
hostilities. A lady we know there in Italy was only about 3 months old
when her mother was killed by a mine, her father was already dead, and
there were no living relatives to care for her so she was raised an
orphan. She visited the museum with us, and really enjoyed it.

The museum is run by a non-profit, all volunteers from the local community,
and they still are finding artifacts from the war. While we were there,
they showed me a U.S. helmet that was remarkably well preserved, found that
day in a nearby river, where some GI had probably dropped it nearly 80
years ago.

The French forces were mostly recruited from their colonies in Africa, IIRC
they were Moroccan, and they had a terrible reputation for very fierce and
brutal fighting vs. the Germans and unfortunately also abusing the
civilians when they weren't fighting. Abusing is putting a very kind face
on it. They wore stripped tunics and white turbans, and the French
officers paid them a dollar per ear taken from a German. More than a few
pictures of these soldiers on display, and they did indeed look pretty
rough and fierce.

There were pieces from a Spitfire that had crashed, which they traced back
to the pilot who had been flying at the time, pilot had bailed out safely
and continued fighting the rest of the war and just died about ten or
fifteen years ago.

They also had found the remains of a German solder, which they returned to
Germany. The guy was just 17 when he died. They had pictures from the
German officials who came to retrieve the remains, and pictures from his
burial ceremony in Germany, and some letters and such around that episode.
German dog tags back then didn't have a name, just a serial number, and
were made to easily break in half. This was so that when a soldier died,
one half was collected for recording his death and the other half stayed
with the body. This set of remains had the complete dog tag, so they knew
he was a MIA that could now be recognized as a KIA.

The place has a facebook site, but I don't know what that is. They really
need a real website, but run on a shoe-string budget.

One section of the museum displays how the locals used the war refuse to
make things they needed. Helmets got a hole punched in the top and made
into a hanging lamp, or had a handle riveted on and made into a pot. Brass
shells from artillery made into flower vases or watering cans or decorated
to commemorate some event. Uniforms where turned inside out so the liner
was displayed instead of the military pattern on the outside (German
mountain troop uniforms were best for this, they were designed to be
reversible, one side was a grey / black camo pattern, other side was white
to blend into snow). There was a wedding dress using the white from that
type of uniform.

information you provide via your blog and the pics and the answers to
comments is the model that all sellers should follow. Those who don't can
be viewed as hiding something.

Re: [MBZ] Pre-glow relay

2019-08-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Craig! Have the sucker and the flux, haven't found a good product
to deal with the coating so usually I just remove it mechanically at each
joint.

I found the following "can" type capacitors:
1 micro-farad
220 " "
470 " "

All are polarized, and it appears they are all rated for 10v and 85 deg C.

There are a few other devices that are similar is shape and size to another
type of capacitor, the much-more-expensive variety, but I can't find any
farad ratings, so I suspect they could be resistors.

I'm going to create a Google Drive folder and put them up there, maybe
someone can help ID them.

Wow, $171K and climbing.

That first pic just seems off to me. There's a couple things hanging under
the front bumper that look sloppy and unkempt, and what is going on with
the large gap between the door and the door sill? That gap also doesn't
look very neat and I'm NOT an expert by any means, but I find it hard to
believe it left the factory with that gap.

I'd like to hear Jaime's thoughts on this car.

Seam Sealer: This sounds like what I need, except it does not mention UV
resistance:

ACDelco Medium Body Seam-Sealing Compound is a high performance seam and
joint sealer with excellent adhesion to most surfaces. It is water
resistant, stays permanently flexible, and withstands weathering,
oxidation, salt water, gasoline, and most solvents. This product is safe to
use on automotive paint. ACDelco Medium Body Seam-Sealing Compound should
not be applied near catalytic convertors and mufflers, due to extreme heat
conditions. For Professional Use Only, Not for Retail Sale.

Re: [MBZ] This Never Gets Old

2019-08-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
This is the part that I was talking about.

210-720-00-42

Looking at pictures of this part revealed in a web search, there is a green
part and a white part, joined by a rivet. On my '95, IIRC, my rear windows
had a grey part and a white part. I drilled out the rivet on the new part,
separating the green from the white, and then replaced the (broken) white
part on my car's regulator. I may be remembering this wrong, maybe it was
the green part that I reused, but the idea is similar. This 210 part has a
plastic part (either green or white) that you can use to repair a 124 rear
window regulator for much less than the cost of a new regulator, IF indeed
the failure you have is similar to how mine failed.

Sounds frustrating. Can you put the battery charger on the vehicle and
leave that charging while you run the diagnostics?

How long is the warranty period on the 'puter?

Here is what I found, after I paid over $100 for just the diffuser at the

Don't get Myers original parts, look for aftermarket like these. I think
there is another name other than Ace that are clone pumps and the parts fit
just fine.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Re: Which compressor oil to use?

2019-08-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Here is some light reading, for those interested.

BLUF: Double-capped PAG will be more expensive, but is also less
hygroscopic, than most PAG oil offered on the secondary market. In other
words, if you buy the PAG oil at the MB counter, it is better than the
generic PAG oil at the FLAPS counter.

https://docs.lib.purdue.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/=1=2250=icec

https://www.autocreativesys.com.sg/resources/primalec-ac
[this writer suggests that the hygroscopic nature of double-capped PAG is
good, absorbs the water which prevents it from making trouble elsewhere in
the system]

https://www.tokic.hr/TehnickeInformacije/Nissens/Nissens_TechnicalBulletin_AC_Compressor_Lubrication%20-%20PAG%20PAO%20mixing.pdf

https://www.waeco.com/en/why-pag-oils-have-to-be-protected-against-moisture/

I see that both Amazon and RockAuto sell the Denso oil for my compressor
(ND-OIL 8), about $20 for 500 ml which is more than a lifetime supply. I'd
have to use some dry CO2 (what I have and use, or one could use some other
dry gas) to purge the wet air every time I open the can.

I'm also wondering if the desiccant in the drier can absorb any water
carried in the PAG oil.

Re: [MBZ] AC compressor oil

2019-08-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well here is a FAQ from the Enviro-Safe website:

https://www.es-refrigerants.com/resources/faq/w/id/16/details.asp
"Is Enviro-Safe™ Refrigerant compatible with all refrigerant oils?

Yes, Enviro-Safe™ is totally compatible with all refrigerant oil available
today. It can be used with Mineral, Ester and PAG oils without
incompatibility."

So I probably need to remove / drain / flush the compressor and the
condenser, re-fill with PAG-46 and charge with ES.

Re: [MBZ] AC compressor oil

2019-08-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Peter - I was under the impression that PAG is "universal" and can be used
with either r12 or r134. The FSM calls for oil from sheet 362, which only
has one oil listed (MB-brand) which I suspect is Denso ND-Oil 8, which is
equivalent to PAG-46.

I've purchased several bottles of mineral oil over the years, and have yet
to find one that lists the viscosity, so I'm hesitant to use a mineral oil
that is not recommended by MB or Denso. I'm assuming that the 46 in PAG-46
is the viscosity.

just put new Bosch lenses on The White Whale. Well worth it, they look

I think I've done something wrong.

Yesterday I finished re-sealing the AC compressor for The White Whale (1987
300TD). My interpretation of the FSM is that 50cc of oil were required,
due to the sudden loss when the shaft seal failed, and replacing the drier,
and draining all old oil from the compressor.

For some reason, I decided to use mineral oil, thinking that was what I had
used last time I did the major flush and re-fill of the system. Wrongo,
pretty sure this morning that the system had PAG-46 in it. No idea what
the viscosity of the mineral oil is, but I'll bet it is 100. So I've got a
blend of oils in the system. Mostly PAG-46, but also mineral oil of
unknown weight.

Then I discovered that I did not have sufficient Envirosafe (propane /
butane blend) so I had to run out to Wal-Mart and get a few cans of r134
(yuck!).

I've only put in two cans / 24 oz of R134, and pressures are plenty high.
Did not have time for a test drive last night but vent temperatures were
only getting down to about 68 deg F with the car sitting in the drive.

I have a feeling I'm going to be flushing the whole system and starting
over.

My 124 wagon came with the alarm disconnected, my '95 sedan still has an
operational alarm, although it will drain the battery if it sits for a
couple of weeks. I just pull fuses or disconnect the battery if I know I'm
going to let that car sit.

The red connector is for the SRS / Airbags, so don't touch that one.

I would start with the two on the far left side, unplug both of those and
see if the central locking system still works. If yes, then check to see

Re: [MBZ] AC options for 300SD

2019-07-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yes, correct on the compressor. Upgrade kits for installing a Sanden are
out there (check on Peach Parts forum, I think there is a guy there selling
kits).

Is it possible to get the regular GM compressor and rotate some part (the
front cover?) so it will work "upside down"? Worth looking into. Pierre
Hedary has a you-tuber video about the compressor, maybe worth giving him a
call. The R4 is not bad, just a little noisy and power hungry.

Keep it R-12 if you can afford it.

Seized compressor probably means a leak gradually bled out the oil, now
compressor parts may be scattered throughout the condenser, so you probably
need to replace that as well. Might as well do whole hog, and replace or
rebuild all the refrigerant lines. Flush out the evaporator, replace the
expansion valve and the drier.

Wow, sorry to hear about that, and also glad to hear that no ride to the
hospital required.

Well, those turbo engines have some value if you want to pull and keep
that. Looks like the intercooler probably got crunched though. There are
some other electronic modules that commonly go bad like the K40 relay and
the gear shifter box, and the radio.

2019-07-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Despite one part (the extra ring / spacer) left over, the pump ran for
about five hours straight with no issues. I'm calling it a success for now.

I just re-started the pump after about 60 hours of sitting, and it had held
its prime and resumed providing water to my redneck sprinkler system
(buried garden hoses, soaker hoses, and one sprinkler hidden so the HOA
won't ding me for leaving garden hoses out) with no issues.

I did learn that the local Ace hardware store that originally sold me the
pump has a resident expert, and if I'd brought him the box of parts, he
probably could have told me exactly how it goes together.

I've dealt with a couple sellers (like Dave Hendy) that are right on the

Ideally the car / seller would be closer so I could just drive over and get

[MBZ] Sellers

2019-07-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Guy on PeachParts is parting out a '95 E300. He is semi-engaged, but I'm
starting to grow weary.

I've sent him questions and a big long list of stuff I'd like, he has only
answered one question and provided no response to my requests for parts.

I guess he's finding out that parting out a car is a pain in the butt.

I guess because this is a residential neighborhood, and the line on signs
has to be drawn somewhere. If signs on vehicles are allowed, then you'll
need to impose more rules to limit them so as to prevent driving
billboards. Avoid the whole mess, just say "no signs". I guess our rules
are intended to make sure the look and feel is one of perfect suburbia...

Aren't the front roof lights also known for failing in such a manner to
cause a current drain?

On my '95 E300, there is a steady current draw that is big enough to kill
the battery in about a week or two, unless I pull fuses C and 9.

I recall that I also had that clicking noise from a relay when I pull those
fuses, don't remember which fuse though,

Re: [MBZ] OT: HOAs and patina

2019-07-09 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
The only thing close to that for my neighborhood is a restriction on
commercial signs. One cannot advertise their business at their home using
a visible sign. One example of that would be a truck or car with your
business info affixed to the car, and that is easily addressed by parking
your car inside your garage at night, or getting magnetic signs that you
take off once you park for the night. The flipside of that is we have a
monthly newsletter and a neighborhood website, and business owners are free
to advertise to their hearts content (free on the HOA website, for a small
fee in the newsletter).

We also have a restriction on parking boats and campers and RVs in the
drive, but there is a loophole: Temporary parking is allowed, but
overnight parking is prohibited. However, the definition of overnight is
defined by "before and after midnight" so if a neighbor want's to report
another neighbor, they have to stay up until midnight and take pix or a
video or something to prove the violation. This results in a letter (not
even a strongly worded letter).

Most of the rules are about keeping your house and yard appearance up, not
putting trash out until trash pick-up day, gotta pay your dues before you
get access to the pool and clubhouse, not making changes to your house
(additions, changing the paint color, etc) or major landscaping changes
without approval in advance. We just put on a new shingle roof, and went
from black shingles to a very light grey (Energy star) so I put in a
package to the ARB and then went to the meeting to explain my choice. I
think they gave me about 30 seconds before the first question interrupted
me, and that was "how much was your quote?" followed by "yeah that's a fair
price" and then they voted to approve it.

Almost every single house in town is under an HOA, so if you want to live
in town, there's not much choice about it. It does add another calculation
- one must check the HOA finances to see if they are financially sound and
you can expect the dues to be reasonably stable, or do they have unfunded
liabilities and the next time something out of ordinary happens they levy a
special fee on top of the regular dues. Our board went to great pains to
identify all the HOA property and liabilities and build a plan for
replacing things at a typical lifecyle, and then paid an accounting firm
for a really big audit to check their work. I think they paid $30k for the
audit, found a few issues, and then increased dues just a bit to cover
those issues over a few years. Pool deck and furniture was just replaced
last winter, all covered. Tennis court complete teardown and rebuild
underway now, no increase in dues required.

We have one neighbor between our neighborhood and the next, single home on
a really nice creek-front lot that is probably five or ten acres, which he
purchased before the land was inside the town boundary line. He's kept his
property out of the town and out of any HOA, so his only immediate higher
authority is the County. A very rare situation, and I'm sure he's not
selling anytime soon, and the place is surely worth a couple million or
more.

Re: [MBZ] Evapectomy

2019-07-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well I believe I may still have a leak somewhere. Prime suspect is the
shaft seal on this compressor (just did the shaft seal / complete reseal on
the compressor in the '95 car).

I charged the system with 120 psi of CO2 on Saturday night, by Sunday
morning that had dropped to about 25 psi.

I put in a test charge of refrigerant, and sporadically my sniffer detected
a leak at the front of the compressor.

I've got plenty of the propane / butane blend on hand, so I decided to
press ahead and find out for sure. Swapped in new receiver / dryer, pulled
a vacuum for 30 minutes then let that sit for 30 minutes, it lost about
half a psi, dropping from 29.5 to 29. Another sign of a leak.

Put in the lost oil (60 ml)and hydrocarbon blend, and checked again for
leaks after letting it run for a bit, but only got one hit of sniffer alarm
at the front of the compressor, with repeated testing on a cycle at all the
various points around the system over about 30 minutes.

I'm thinking the shaft seal is the culprit, so another compressor re-seal
is probably in my future.

Last night during the test drive, the lowest observed vent temperature was
48 deg F. This a.m. on the drive to work I saw 50 deg F.

Re: [MBZ] Evapectomy

2019-06-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
There are a few mistakes in the service manual procedures that slowed me
down a bit.

The glove box must be removed to disconnect the right front speaker, the
small suction motor for the interior temp. sensor, and the light for the
vent control. Removing the glove box (or the airbag on later models) is
not even discussed.

Toward the end of the heater box take-apart, second to last step (or there
abouts) says remove some fasteners and then pull off top piece to expose
the evap, but the next step says to remove more fasteners, that second step
needs to be completed to pull off the top piece.

In order to get at the expansion valve, the cowling ductwork at the bottom
of the windscreen needs to be removed, that step is also omitted.

I used a bunch of small ziploc bags, labeled with each assembly, to hold
all the fasteners for those assemblies, that kept all the assorted nuts and
screws in order.

The most troublesome connectors were little plastic pins with a
four-cornered push-snap connection, usually very awkwardly placed, that
hold the various vacuum pod arms to the levers they move. I'm sure there
is some special tool that makes removal easy, but I don't have it.

I used plumber's putty to substitute the factory seal between the heater
box and the body (hole in the firewall), which was very similar (still
somewhat malleable after 32 years).

Re: [MBZ] OT tankless water heaters

2019-06-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Our Whirlpool Gold induction cooktop was a lot of trouble at first,
requiring numerous service calls and several episodes of broken cooktop -
waiting a week or two for parts - find a different way to cook until
fixed. All parts and labor were covered under warranty, and at this point
every signal circuit inside the cooktop has been replaced twice or more.
Not covered: the frustration of a very un-friendly customer service
experience. Never were any of the parts in stock locally, we always had to
wait, and no customer diagnosis allowed - had to schedule a tech to visit
and confirm "yep - it's dead, send more replacement parts" even though the
phone support to me (the homeowner) ran exactly the same tests that the
professional phone support to the tech did, and reached the same
conclusion.

Stove would die. Schedule tech for next available visit (usually about a
week out), tech would confirm it's dead and order parts, wait a week or two
for parts, could not schedule a visit until parts arrived, so wait up to
another week for tech to arrive with parts and _hopefully_ fix the stove.

The good news: It has made it almost a year now with nary a hiccup, so I
think we're finally good.

Uses far less power, is really easy to clean up, heats up really fast.

Inconvenient: ferrous pots work best, anything else needs an adapter plate
(a steel plate) to transfer the heat to the pot, so efficiency is lost.
