[MBZ] XP Update: for real or did I get punked?
A Windows XP update popped up in the Windows toolbar in the same place where Win updates have for years. It popped up from the MS shield toolbar icon (ie, not a web ad) There were two files, which after some hesitation, I green-lit. One was KB972270 and a second one whose number I didn't record. I thought MS didn't support XP anymore. Did they have a change of heart, or did I get punked? Looked legit. [MBZ] ROM BIOS is a wirus you get when you open an email
I got a call from Ah-Poo, aka Mike who sounded like he was from the Microsoft branch office in Calcutta, warning me breathlessly that reports from their servers detected a virus (wirus) had infected my computer! If I turned control of my computer over to him, he assured me, he could clean my computer. I told him I would only speak to a Microsoft Certified Technician, and asked him if he was one. He said yes. I said before we go any further, explain to me, in detail, about the architecture of the DOS ROM BIOS, of which Windows is a part, and any MSCT would know by heart. Crickets, followed by a hangup. Lo, not 15 minutes later, I got ANOTHER call from Microsoft, perhaps this time from Bombay. Same-same as the first conversation, and when I asked him the magic question, this one didn't skip a beat, and told me ROM BIOS is a wirus you get when you open an email. I had to give him points for thinking on his feet. So, as a public service to the MB community, don't open any emails, or you may get a ROM BIOS DBV, wired for wiruses information minister ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] Ponomusic. Opinions?
Ponomusic ( https://ponomusic.force.com/ ) is a high def music project backed by Neil Young. Its an inline lossless digital music player, due to ship Q1 2015 at $400 a pop. Their library is rather limited at the moment, but they plan on expanding rapidly as more licensing agreements are signed with artists and publishers. That aside, they claim to at least attempt to improve the throughput quality of non-lossless files -- even mp3's -- as well, meaning you don't necessarily have to buy their remastered files for it to work, with the aforementioned caveats on output quality. Their files are extremely dense, turning what would be a 3-4 meg mp3 into 50-60 meg file, if memory serves. Their current players are expandable to 128 G -- 64 G on board, with a 64 G slot So, is this a game changer in high-def listening, or a well-intentioned but ultimately non contributory measure to improve the art? Opinions? [MBZ] Dead Men Get No X-Rays
The wife, who is an X-Ray tech at the crosstown clinic, tried to process a 41 year old white male for a scan, but couldn't because he was dead. It was the opinion of my highly trained spouse that, not only was he not deceased, he was actually in pretty robust physical condition. He got shuffled off to the reception / data processing / information management bureaucracy, in what I would assume, was an attempt to electronically revive him. Karen stayed until the clinic closed and told me he never came back for his X-Rays. [MBZ] Convoy
Does anyone still use CB radios anymore? I was thinking about our planned caravan to Indiana with three vehicles (me driving our Big Red Van [BRV (tm)] towing our utility trailer, Shirley driving our E320, and my brother driving a rental truck towing our 240D/3.0), and realized that cell phones wouldn't work too well. It occurred to me that CB radios would be better, allowing the two other people to hear what one was saying. I have located three CB radios, four* from our local freecycle group for free and one from a $10 eBay auction, but I don't know if they work because I don't have any antennas. Any suggestions on antennas? Thanks, Craig *** You are overthinking it. Todd and i used to go on road trips using a pair of hand held walkies. They don't have the legs CB's do, but if you don't get separated by more than a few miles, they work just fine. Bring an extra set of AA batteries to refresh, and you are good to go. Turn 'em off every time you pull off for a gas or pee break. PLus, they are newly manufactured stock, cheap ($30+ for a pair -- get the highest rated wattage output you can find for a reasonable price), and you don't have to worry about electronics from the Jimmy Carter administration. [MBZ] N2 in tires -- the chemist has spoken
Dry nitrogen gas as an option to inflate premium tires (the places that have beluga caviar in the waiting rooms) is used because 1) The gas contains no moisture, and 2) 100% Nitrogen replaces oxygen in air, and oxygen decays rubber over time, thus at least extending tire life from within. Nitrogen is by no means inert, but oxidizes at a rate much lower than its namesake. Any dry non-O2 bearing gas would do, and N2 is plentiful and cheap...except if you are pumping it into Michelins, apparently. That means, of course, every time you have to top off your tires, you must continue to supplement the dry N2. No gas station air pumps for you! The internal environment of dry N2 prevents the one-two punch of water and oxygen rotting rubber. The third component is light (photodecay), but if you see light on the inside of your tire, its time to get new tires. This I tell you. It has no effect on any external tire performance properties, to my knowledge. I will stand corrected if that assumption is wrong DBV, official house chemist ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] I'll pass on the peas.
My father-in-law has always been reluctant to talk about his wartime service. This was due to the fact that he was a POW camp guard, and in his mind not a worthy contribution to the war effort. He's never really opened up about it at length, but we know that he guarded German prisoners at Camp Atterbury in south central Indiana, close to the town he grew up in, Ninevah, IN. What we do know is that many of the POWs were used as farm laborers and were well thought of by the locals. They welcomed the into their homes and became friends with many of them. From what we were told a number of them either remained in the area after the war or returned on their own to live in the area. There was a large German community in Indianapolis, so I am sure some might have headed that way. The area I grew up in on the south side of Indianapolis had a lot of first generation German immigrants who were farmers. Dan Sent from my iPad ** Local story: Our high school's German teacher was a former POW in a camp in Reedsburg, WI, in southern Wisconsin. His day job along with other POW's was to work the fields for a pea farmer. While I'm sure he ultimately had a well balanced diet, his vegetable ration consisted of peas, peas, and more peas. He stayed in the States after the war, and the employment path of least resistance for him was to teach high school German, which he did into the 1980's before retiring. He told us his POW stories, and while his memories were mostly good ones, he said he never ate another pea again, for which I can't blame him.
