Thanks, that was pretty comprehensive on complaints about the CA 85 model What the meaning of the acronym TO? (i haven't been forced to look into it any further, knock on wood!) too many things about the '85s make them 'one year cars', and the CA versions are even more full of oddities due to the Trap Oxidizer that MBZ threw at them that year. one things that especially irks me about the '85 is the Injection Pump; while it was alleged to help the motor produce more power, seems there's an Electric Fuel Pressure Regulator that means that even with mechanical injection, these things won't work without electricity. (that just seems *wrong* to me somehow,... mechanical FI should always just *work*.) because of that pump making more power, the '85 has a rear axle ratio that's taller; better for the highway, but worse in town, and that even affects the instrument panel since a different speedo is needed. then, i believe there's a torque converter that's got a different stall speed; not sure if that was supposed to be related to the IP and axle ratio, or emissions; i've heard stories about it being both. for CA, the TO was an issue you'll hear many people complain about. IIRC, there were 3 Factory campaigns, causing most of them to eventually be changed out to be Catalytic Converters (if they hadn't eaten themselves up already), but we're still stuck with Intake and Exhaust Manifolds that are unique to that subset of that one year, a less common turbo, and an air filter that's not shared with any other 300 diesel, and priced accordingly. keep your fingers crossed that yours remains running well! cheers! e On 27/Jul/12 19:41, andrew strasfogel wrote: My 85 TD is a CA version and it is not particularly finicky. I've got a 85 Calif Turbo and it now has a catalytic converter. I know the air cleaners are God awful expensive but I was curious if there were any other complaints with the Calif version other than we don't salt our roads so they stay pretty rust free. [MBZ] Replacement seat belt
I was junkyarding a replacement seat belt for my 1985 300 D and they were the first year with seat belt pretensioners. I couldn't find the exact p/n but did find on looking identical. It was out of the drives side 1990 300 and it said the Y axis was 10 degrees. This is oppose to my drivers side which says it is 4 degrees. The passenger side on my car has a different part number and while it looks identical it says it's Y axis is 356 degrees. What is with the Y axis. Is it related to the pretensioner or is it concerning the angle the seat belt allows one to extend the belt? Does anyone know the importance of the Y axis parameter and if I'm OK using the belt in my car? It was fogging the windscreen at the blower outlet this afternoon after about 3 min. 1 can a year, I can live with that. On another note, I was vacuuming it yesterday, and the RR door was being a bit recalicitrant. It would not close after I yanked it open, groaning. I removed the latch strap and fooled around with it for some time trying to determine why it would not close. After all my ministrations, I determined it was a hopeless cause and sent the Rman an email to send a new one. I got it work in the vise, but it would not work in the car. Weird. I guess when they give up they are not worth fooling with.
