[MBZ] $3.99 Mobil One, addendum

2010-11-30 Thread glenn brown

Guys, I recently purchased an '85 300TD from my brother and this car had been
previously diagnosed with valve stem seals which need replacing as there's
considerable oil smoke after startup from cold but disappears after ~ 5 min. of
running. Since I seem to recall the honorable Dr. Booth indicating that
synthetic oils tend to swell seals more than conventional/dino oils, I thought
I'd try synthetic oil in the TD for a couple oils changes to see if this
improves things before I seriously consider trying to replace the valve stem
seals. Since I've only got a few hundred miles on the first synthetic oil
change in the TD and the offer at Advance would be just too good to pass up,
I thought I'd purchase some of the Mobil 1 5W-40 diesel truck oil ahead of time
for the next oil change but the Advance Auto Parts store employee indicated
that this oil is not on sale and I tried the purchase on the Net approach,
where someone has indicated that the discount would show up in the cart
electronically . . . Note: this does not occur.

It occurs for everything but the diesel and motorcycle oils. Buy the 15W50
instead if you don't want to go to Wal-Mart or pay $8 for it.

Hi Glenn,

Your idea has merit, my '96 Dakota was leaking badly from the rear main seal,
it was losing a qt in like 500 miles and I had no job or garage or tools to
work on it (this was before I had a house) so I tried synthetic in it. After
~20,000 miles the leak had slowed to ~1qt in 3,000 miles and stayed that way
for ~100,000 more miles until I got rid of the truck. You have to be patient
though. My '78 240D leaks/consumes a fair amount, I haven't really tracked it
but I'd say 1qt in 800 miles or so but I've gone to M1 and its improving slowly.

The 5w40 doesn't qualify for the deal but the 15w50 does. While its not as
light an oil as the 5w40 and not as good for cold weather its a considerable
improvement in the cold over conventional 15w40.

The ONLY auto crancase additive I have ever used that actualy worked was
NAPA Rear Main Bearing Seal Leak Repair.

Add it to hot engine, run for 15 minutes and let sit o'nite.
I've had this stuff swell up the seals on 3 old cars, a good $4 shot on
an old car that's crapping up the driveway or oiling the clutch.
