Re: [MBZ] '79 450SEL

2007-06-22 Thread Peter Frederick
Get some Techron or RedLine fuel injector cleaner if you want to use
something.

You need to verify that the fuel pump is running, it not it can be
quite expensive on that car, I don't think they are as easy to restore
to working condition as the W108 ones.

No fuel means a stuck fuel distributor or a bad fuel pump. DO NOT dump
Seafoam into an intake hose, the only problem you have is fuel supply
related, and it could just be the syrup in the tank!

Take 5 gal of fresh premium with you, take the fuel line off the tank
and drain whatever is in there out, re-fit line, and dump in the fresh
fuel along with the bottle of injector cleaner. Jumper the fuel pump
relay and let the pump run for an hour or so --this will flush any
sludge or gum out of the fuel distributor that is going to come out.

Crack the injector lines loose on both ends and push down on the air
flow meter flap to flush both the FD and the lines (tighten them up on
the FD when clean fuel comes out). Tighten the injector lines when
clean fuel comes out at the injector.

THEN try to start it.

[MBZ] '79 450SEL

2007-06-22 Thread BillR
While I am waiting to be able to buy Donald's 300SEL for my wife to drive I
am going to look at a $750 1979 450SEL in the morning for my daughter to
drive for a few months. If the guy is correct the car has 130k miles,
interior is good [no rips, tears or cracks], body is good, and it ran fine
when he bought it a couple of years ago and has just been sitting in a shop
since. Says it will start and run fine but you have to keep gas going into
it - higher rev than idle, at least. He thinks it is because of old fuel,
and he has done nothing to it since he bought it. I bought a can of
Seafoam, suggested by the guy at the FLAPS, who said I might want to try
putting half into one of the intake hoses and half into the fuel tank. Not
sure what hose he was talking about - I have not even looked at a gas engine
in a number of years, and not actually worked on one since my '62 Alfa..
Anyone able to talk me through how to do this? Just which hose and how to
find it, or other suggestions. At 130k miles and 28 years anything I should
especially look out for?

Thanks - BillR

Fuel pump is shot, or the air flow meter flap is stuck, it has no fuel
delivery (could just be a fuel pump relay, too). Might be a big vac
leak as well (torn boot between airflow meter and throttle body)

At least it's not blowing huge black smoke clouds, that means a new
fuel distributor!

Re: [MBZ] '79 450SEL with fuel problems

2007-06-21 Thread BillR
That's what I need to know. I am just looking for something for my daughter
to drive until I can buy the 300 SEL from Donald. Here is the owner's reply
to my questions:

Hey, Bill,
The "update" wasn't referring to the engine. That was an information update
for the ad. The engine is the original. The fuel system problem is from the
gas going stale.
The car sat in a shop for a couple of years. I have no idea what the gas
mileage was like, but it probably wasn't all that good with that huge V8.
When I keep a steady feed going into the air valve, it runs good and sounds
good. As for a history, I can only vouch for the past 3 years. I bought it
to fix up for myself, but am moving up north and can't take it w/ me. By the
looks of the car, it had a pretty easy life and was just parked and
forgotten. The interior is in good condition. No rips or tears. Just needs
to be cleaned. The floor mats and carpet also look good. It needs a paint
job, but the body is straight. Now, it has a flat tire, but shouldn't be any
problem to move. Come out and take a look, Bill, I think you will like it
for $750 cash. If interested, give me a call @ 904 619-9859. Thanks,
Metal Mike

Thoughts everyone?

Thanks - Bill

Well its probably going to need ALOT of work, fuel parts probably means
it needs a new fuel pump, fuel tank removed and cleaned out, maybe a
fuel distributor. Rust is a major problem on those cars. In the end,
if you sort it out you will probably have a $900 car when you are done.
