Well if so then its 2 different leaks. On mine, it was leaking from the
c clip area, so I just pulled one off another trans and swapped it in.
Stupid me I didnt replace the big o-ring under the assembly and it
leaked from there. So I had to pull it apart again. Thats the hard
part, trying to get the oring to stay in place while you reinstall it.

  -- Jim

At least on my '91 300d its a 12 point nut. While (I think) its
nominally a 30mm bolt, my 30mm 1/2 drive 12 point socket wasn't deep
enough- I ended up using a 3/4 drive 12 point 'Merican socket (I think
its 1 3/16, can check tonight if you want) that my Dad had in his box.
I always wondered why- might be usable on old Bug rear wheels or
something like that.

The nut is peened over at one point as well-

I think so. Certainly so on a 450 SL. I bought the seal
for when the tranny was out, but it looked good and didn't
leak, and I determined to replace it in-car if it ever did
leak. Didn't ever leak, I sold the car six years later,
and still have the seal in a box somewhere. (I did replace

What size is this socket I need and where should I purchase it?

It's a 12-point deep socket, but I forget the size. 27mm? I
always meant to get one. What I have is the special castle
nut socket for its predecessor.

[MBZ] '86 SDL tranny leak

2007-05-24 Thread Luther
Noticed the other day that the tranny started slipping. Added some fluid the
other day and it started slipping again today. Grr, so I looked for fluid
leaks and it seams to be coming from the very back of the tranny. The
driveshaft has some red moisture, along with the exhaust and exhaust bracket.
Seems I'll be doing a tail shaft seal.
Anyone else done this? Is it very tough? Will I need any special tools (other
than the tranny lift) to perform this? TIA all.

I believe you need a special socket for the tail shaft nut. I think it
has a retainer too, but a chisel will fold that back out.

I don't think you need any special tools to do a tailshaft seal,
except whatever socket you need to release the nut. The tranny
stays in place.

Wow, so all I need to do is drop the driveline and pull the tail shaft
seal that

way? What size is this socket I need and where should I purchase it?
