SQLite to be exact. You can download a special browser to look at the databases if you have access to the phone. If you don’t, this data is no more available to anyone than the phone’s owner. That is, you would have to crack the phone’s passcode to view the databases. -D > On May 30, 2019, at 3:21 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes > wrote: > > iPhones have a SQL database in which everything is stored. I don't know if it's true. On Android, control of iptables can really cut down on leaks - but requires root. There are a couple userspace firewalls that should control any "respectable" apps - but I don't think face book counts as respectable. NetGuard is one. Using it will almost certainly intrude on user experience. I don't > know. I use FB on a Firefox mobile browser, with Adblock Plus, > Privacy Badger, Noscript, and still get a few targeted ads > (stuff I've searched for). Blame cookies and web bugs. Block those and you should browse "clean". Of course, cookies are needed to log in to face book and other places, but if the cookies are deleted upon logout then even the web bugs will have less to report. Another option is multiple browsers. I'm not sure how much is shared between them, but a lot less than within one! Again, cookies, web bug, javascript, multiple browsers all are methods that will impact user experience. You have to decide if the bother is worth it. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On our desktop and laptop (in Windows, as well as Linux), I have some of the Googs and all of fb, twitter, pinterest, and many other suspect sites blocked by setting the addresses to the local dump url (127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0). Have you bothered to go into your Google account and minimize the data they can collect? Using Activity Controls and Ad Settings can cut down significantly on the data they have access to. After that you use their Takeout tool to download your data history and clean that out, too. There are other means of denying them information if you do some research. This is also why I don’t use a Google account for my primary email. -D > On May 30, 2019, at 7:26 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes > wrote: > > Alphabet/Google reads all my text messages, that is troubling. True, and maybe I’m being too simplistic. The point being that is if you correspond with anyone who does not use the app, your communications will not be encrypted. So unless you can get everyone you know on board with Signal, you’re sending and receiving unencrypted SMS messages (unless you’re using an iPhone and the other part is as well.) -D > On May 29, 2019, at 9:01 PM, OK Don via Mercedes > wrote: > > Almost correct - Signal only sends info to other signal apps/users. Almost correct - Signal only sends info to other signal apps/users. It's not just encrypted SMS. It’s for text messaging, so I’m not sure how it would benefit you for online purchases. And yes, it’s an excellent choice for users that want to keep their text messaging encrypted if they’re not using iMessage (Apple) or another encrypted messaging app. It’s not terribly useful as the person on the other end is using a native messaging app, however. In other words, if you send me an SMS message with Signal and I don’t have the app installed on my phone, you’re no more secure than if you were using the native Android messaging app of your choice. The receiving entity has to have Signal on their phone, too for the message to be encrypted. As for email, if you’re trying to secure that, it’s a whole ‘nother ball game. And do be aware that your ISP/phone provider is logging everything that goes across the wire, too. There is so much data being vacuumed up that it’s a complete 'whack a mole” world out there. I’m a security professional with all the tools necessary at my fingertips, and I don’t bother with stuff like this unless I’m doing OSINT or HUMINT work, depending on the entity I’m doing it for. Going dark takes a LOT of time and energy. There are a lot of nice little tools like browser extensions you can use to keep the amount of personal data that gets scraped to a minimum, but it you want to go all in, and just about anyone can, it takes some serious effort and inconvenience to do so. -D > On May 29, 2019, at 8:34 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes > wrote: > > With all the info out recently about The Googs keeping a database of > everything someone purchases through a g mail account I figure that an open > source app with good privacy will keep my communications more secure.
