They probably do, but you HAVE to know that's the oldest line in the
book for ANYTHING a kid wants.

I can see a kid that age having a cell phone for certain occasions like
when they are at some event and need to call you for a ride or
something, since pay phones really aren't around much anymore.  But one
to have at all times?  I agree, no, too young and no need.

The only reason I have a cell phone is because work provided it, and
required me to be 'available'. It is better than having to be there,
or near a land line.

About a year ago, the wife wants to get the 12 year old a cell phone.  I 
pitch a bitch saying that is just stupid, he can get one when he gets a 
job and can pay for it.  Well, he ends up getting one.  Just now, the 11 
year old was given one for his b-day, I think that is even more stupid. 
  Why the heck do kids need these?  I didnt get one till I was in my 
20's.  The kids say all their friends have them.  Geez.

Lots of my neighbors in the McMansion development down the street (and a few
of my friends) have mortgages that they're now upside down on by say a new S
*and* SL class.   Had to live there, though, because of job/pride/status.

Sometimes its GOOD to NOT be just like the friends/cool kids!

issue which I think is mostly caused by a media which has convinced them that 
if they leave their kid alone for 20 seconds he'll be kidnapped or molested or 
whatever...

If I ever have a kid he can get a phone when he can pay for it as you've said.
