exactly, that's the diagnostic test for a failed switch -- it is there

flexible enough to replace one, it can’t be a terribly expensive

2021-01-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
No, but it might be they didn't test it that way using DAS, i.e., did
they activate the brake and see if the shifter could see that action.
My point is that a $150 investment is likely to save a lot of grief and
time and money and might be able to diagnose a problem without having to
deal with a mech or dealer, and to identify some cheap part to replace

Re: [MBZ] 07 E320 Blutec (92 KMI) sticks in PARK

2021-01-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The problem is that the switch has to be not doing its thing when the scanner
is connected. Having worked 5 years in phone support I'm well acquainted with
"It wasn't working before I called you." In fact it got to the point that there
were a bunch of customers who specifically wanted to talk to me because "It
just works when you're on the phone."I usually attributed it to my carefully
walking people through the steps so they didn't do the wrong thing. Rule #1 of
any kind of support is "Customers lie, they may not even know they're lying."
"I did the exact same thing you did. Well, I mean I clicked on this button over
here but its the same thing right?"

Good guess, Rick. That’s a likely candidate.

I don’t know about the later models, but as Rick described, brake
light switches are cheap as wine for W210s and earlier, possibly
later models as well. While I doubt Wilton or Mrs. Wilton would be
flexible enough to replace one, it can’t be a terribly expensive job
at the dealer or shop. It’s not hard to do, but involves having to
get under the driver’s side dash, which even for us younger folks
isn’t easy.

Good to hear from you, Wilton! I was thinking of you recently while
watching the Ken Burns documentaries on Vietnam.

Brake switch malfunction. I had the same issue on my W210. There
should be a way to override that. I will post what I find. BTW, the
brake light switch was about $20 full price from the dealer for my car.

I *think* the $150 iCarsoft can see these switches in real time down in
some menu so you can see if they are actually activating, and maybe see
the shift selector state to understand what it is thinking.  It might
not necessarily throw a code since it is not really "failed" in the
sense it out of the system, just not activating.

Again, if you spend some few thousands of $$ on one of these newer cars,
do yourself a favor and spend the $150 so you can deal with this kind of
thing without having to deal with a mech who knows nothing about your
car other than what the computer is telling zat. You will thank me,
you're welcome.

Upon further review, it may NOT be the brake switch. W210 has different
maladies the W211.

Two sets of contacts. One for lights, one for park lock, I think. I would
expect both sets of contacts are inputs to the body control computer, but that
is a guess.

Does that mean Mrs Wilton can get out and observe the brake lights not
lighting?
