Alan,

Have you ever looked at your electric vacuum pump. I think the ones that
come with the factory security system have some extra relays built into them
and a LOT more wires coming out of them. Most have 3 or 5 wires but one I saw
had about 15.

Just curious and wondering if the spare vacuum pump I have is rare.

2006-08-30 Thread Alan Duff
I just drove the 85 300D home yesterday as the temp gauge went quickly to
red hot but I didn't think the engine was getting hot. Put in a
replacement gauge yesterday and the temp is fine. Turns out I got it from
the original owner, he purchased it in Delaware and brought it to East
Tenn when he moved here. Going to work on sorting out the alarm issue and
do a routine tune up. If it works out I will make it my daily driver and
let the 91 300CE rest a while. It is the Desert Red, one of my favorite MB
colors. The leather interior is fried from the sun but I have a pristine
MB Tex interior in a '83 300D that I will swap out. The 83 was hit in the
front end and got a half-a** repair as the hood doesn't fit correctly, it
will soon go to Ebay. Where is the vacuum pump located? That is probably
the first place to look for the alarm problem.

Allan,

I assumed you had an electric vacuum pump as most all MB from about 82 on
have them. Kaleb says no and he has a bunch of them. IF you have one, it
would be in the spare tire well or under the back seat passenger side. It
will
be enclosed in a triangular shaped foam rubber for silencing, about 6 inches
on a side and 4 inches deep..

Alarm failures are often blamed on the Bosch module which you will find
under the passenger side carpeting or on the firewall, under the carpeting. A
known good spare would be good here. Another point of failure is the electric
switch on the drivers door latch, operated by your key. When this contact
sticks, the alarm thinks you are being thefted. The switch will sometimes
change position in the middle of the night, setting off your alarm. Cleaning
the
switch will often fix the alarm problem.

Now VERY curious to know if you have an electric vacuum pump

Good luck,

I think the W123 did not have an electric vac pump, only started with
the W126 (in the trunk) and the W124 (under the rear seat).

It is a mechanical pump in the same place as all the other 123's I have had.

No electrics in 123 to my knowledge. The only car that I know of
to have both electric and non-electric vacuum systems was the 107.
So 114/115, 116, 107, and 123 go the two-line tanked system, whereas
107, 124, 201, and 126 got the one-line pumped system.

Newer than these and you're on your own!
