Re: [MBZ] 2000 CLK320 - 102k miles - $4,000

2021-06-29 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The DAS can read some of the top stuff, but not much - it’s pretty much a black
box for the most part.

BBA Reman can rebuild and repair them, although it’s not cheap. I think I paid
$350 some years back for mine to get repaired when it was throwing a fault I
couldn’t clear. I was able to determine there was a fault in the controller,
but what that fault was could not be revealed in DAS. Some research suggested
that the accelerometer that’s in the controller was bad. This is critical for
the operation of the roll bar, so if it fails the roll bar won’t deploy in a
rollover. In pre-facelift models this is controlled by microswitches on the the
rear suspension, but in facelift models that job was taken over by an
accelerometer that’s inside of the top controller.

It acted up again a few years later, but since they have a lifetime warranty I
just sent it back and they repaired it for free. I marked it so I knew if they
replaced or just repaired it, and I got my controller back.

2021-06-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I know, but I doubt if there is much difference in the electronics,
maybe some other newer version, but I am guessing they are just as
temperamental.  On the 129 the top controller stuff is some sort of
black art to try to scan and reset too, that might have improved with
this model although if it is like my 99E320 the HHTWIN is problematic in
trying to dig into it too but it might be the software and the
implementation on this thing I bought.  Did you ever do that on your
SL500 when you did the hydraulics and how did that go?

In any case if the fuse and switch are not bad or need cleaning, could
be a PITA to chase it all down.  I don't know if the iCarsoft could read
the top stuff or not, it is hit or miss sometimes on the 210, so
DAS/HHTWIN would be needed if not, and even if that would work I don't
know.  I guess it wouldn't hurt to try to scan it, and then use any
(non-) results to beat on the guy if someone wanted to do that to try to
get a deal on the car and deal with it.

My guess is the fuse if it has been sitting. I'd check the battery voltage and
fuse first, ask if he tried to jumpstart it after sitting and buggered it up
that way. these top controllers and all that stuff are very problematic even
if the hydraulics are working. Might also need fluid but that is easy. I
don't understand that business about the switches, but they could be buggered
too and need a good cleaning.

I'd offer $2k as it sits as the car looks nice, with the expectation that the
fix COULD be pricey and buying it could be an expensive risk, and if he wants
to keep messing with it to sell it then fine, here's my offer. Maybe some
other fool would go more.

Plus apparently his phone will drain out the pics if he turns it sideways to
get the whole car in the pic, so he's an idiot anyway.
