Re: [MBZ] 2007 Black/Tan E350 - 174k miles - $7,000

2021-10-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I offered a guy $700 for a nice 07E350 with a munched engine, all kinds of cam
sensor, misfire, and timing codes. I guess he sold it for $800, he said that
was the least he would take.

I suppose it's *possible* that some actually didn't have inferior parts. If the
balance shaft gear is bad, it should have a code set, or a pending code. If no
code pending, I might take a chance, but I would use impending engine failure
as a bargaining chip.

And of course, be prepared to scrap it, or pull the engine and repair it, when
the time comes.

According to VIN this one would have the weak balance shaft parts.

Do ALL these M272s have the problem eventually, or were some of them good? If
it's at 174k miles and still OK, does that mean it most likely won't have this
problem?

The M272s had a bad balance shaft and timing gears that failed prematurely from
the inception of production until sometime between 2007/2008. The only way to
be sure if the engine is one of the affected is to get the VIN or engine number
and run it through one of the online tools that give the serial number cutoff.

I pretty much ignore anything prior to 2008 with the M272.
