The shifter is loose and the reverse lockout is gone. The mechanic doesn’t want to take the shifter apart because it will make the car unmovable unless you push it. I have posted photos before of a set of ramps that I made out of 3/4" plywood. I didn't invent them. They were a plan in a car magazine way back when. I made a taller set back in the early 70's that I used with a pickup truck to get it higher. In the 80's or 90's I made another set with a more gradual slope to permit me to drive our then Taurus or Sable onto them and not take out the front spoiler. The other advantage of them is that being a more gradual slope, it is much easier for the car to climb them. Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed
Hi John, It’s not terribly difficult can you definitely need the car raised up a bit to get under it. It’s something that’s pretty straightforward on a lift, so any competent shop should be able to do it if your not up for it. Just be sure genuine MB parts are used. Lots of shops cut corners and use little pieces of fuel hose, etc instead of waiting for the correct parts. The bushings in the shifter itself can be done from inside the car, but not the ones are the shift rods which are most important Good luck, Jaime On Tue, May 11, 2021 at 12:23 PM John Ingram via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Jaime, > > Thank you, this is the explanation I was hoping for. Re: [MBZ] 240D 4-speed
Welcome back John. Could be bushings, but hard to say. I locked up a manny trying to install fresh bushings. Should have been more careful about not letting the transmission end arms move. With wiggly play in the rods, sometimes two gears can become engaged. I had to secure a fresh working trans to swap in. Never did get the locked up one torn down and rebuilt. clay I have no pronouns please do not refer to me. > On May 10, 2021, at 1:05 PM, John Ingram via Mercedes > wrote: > > I have a ’83 240D 4-speed manual, 300+++ miles.
