Curt, I'm curious, what are you using to do the sanding?

IIRC the original 50-dollar-paint-job guy said that on his Corvair the
sander or buffer, I forget which, made a big difference, so he was glad that
he had a good one (which didn't count towards the $50, of course).

Yeah after letting the thing dry my earlier fears were pretty much unfounded.
What I thought was contamination turned out to be texture caused by the roller
which layed down nicely.
I did end up with more orange peel than I'm happy with, I think caused mostly
by the garage being hot and the mix being on the thick side. I thinned more and
rolled another coat last night but didn't have time to check it out this
morning.

I'd said it would take 8 coats and I think I was probably right, 2 more to go
but with having to go to work (and hating to get up early enough to put on a
coat before work) it'll be one coat a day...

Foam is the way to go -- those little rollers give a very good finish on
cabinets and such. You might also look for some stuff called Flo-Trol
that somehow or other makes paint flow easier or lay flatter -- it's
always around the sprayers at Lowes. Not sure what it is but the
Mexican painters all use it in their airless sprayers. Don't know if it
is for latex or oil, probably latex as that is mostly what they all use.

The foam roller is easier to get a nice finish out of but I have to be
much more careful with pressure. I think my paint pan is getting dirt in it too,
I had big troubles with contaminants. I also learned that I MUST close the
garage door, it becomes a wind tunnel, not good.

I tried a slightly thicker mix today BAD IDEA, I ended up with really bad
pooling which required 3x rolling to get it somewhat smooth. I'm worried
I'm going to have to sand the whole coat off and repaint. Hopefully I got it
smooth enough.

The color is starting to show though, the wife says it looks good, so
thats something.

Line your paint tray with aluminum foil and then throw it out each time rather
than cleaning the tray. Keeps it
cleaner and costs less than cleaning it.

To get started I used a 1/4 sheet orbital sander. Now that the body work is
done I've been doing a quick pass with 400 grit to rough up the surface and
knock off any contaminants. I need a sheet of 600, the 400 is too rough for the
last two coats. Hopefully my wife will be able to get to the store tomorrow.
