Gary wrote: a lot of people don't like the us spec m110 as it is over thirsty

That is close to how I felt about mine, except mine was a Euro model. It was
not a CE, but an E. I don't know if mine was a US Spec, but it was a M110. It
was not underpowered for me, but it was certainly thirsty. I hated the Euro
seats (with the cloth because it was very rough on the legs if you had shorts
on). I did like the way it drove. It had a very tight suspension. Mine was a
1983 with 150,000 miles on it. I guess the only real complaint was how bad the
fuel mileage was.

I like the looks of the CE better.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-03 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Thanks Gary,
I have been lusting after a 300CD but they have become so pricey-there is
one now on Hartford CT CL for 9500. Watched several on e-bay a couple weeks
ago-ranged from $3800 to $7100. I may have found a nice 280CE-will go check
it out. Gas mileage is not a concern as I have the two diesels. As for
underpowered-well I just sold my 240D automatic that I drove for five years,
so the 280 has to be a step up.

i have a rather rough one. i love it as a beater. big windows with no b
pillar. slightly shorter wheelbase. it's a very pleasant car and i
probably drive it more than any other car i own

a lot of people don't like the us spec m110 as it is over thirsty and low
powered. it is a very pleasant underpowered gas guzzler.

the real caveat i would have is that if you require a nice one, you will
have to get lucky, especially if you require a nice one cheap. you might
have better luck hunting down a w126 sec.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
I owned one drove it quite a while.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The
correct battery is hard to remove because it has to pulled out at the exact
correct angle.

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes
issues.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
Not pushrod, DOHC. They are good engines. I owned a 1975 280 and a 1978
280CE. The 75 was carbureted and the 78 was FI.

Both preferred mid-grade gas would diesel when you turned the key off
without it.

Expect 15 MPG in town and 18 MPG on the road, but like I tell my friends who
comment about my Corvette mileage, it doesn't matter at 50 - 100 miles a
week.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

Yes, this would be one of three MB's so it would be driven mostly around
town or an occasional road trip. Of course, I really don't need it.

Not pushrod, DOHC. They are good engines. I owned a 1975 280 and a 1978
280CE. The 75 was carbureted and the 78 was FI.

Both preferred mid-grade gas would diesel when you turned the key off
without it.

Expect 15 MPG in town and 18 MPG on the road, but like I tell my friends who
comment about my Corvette mileage, it doesn't matter at 50 - 100 miles a
week.

I owned one drove it quite a while.

The engines suffer from oil leak issues around the cam carrier and the
valves can be a pain to adjust because the adjusters ten to seize up. The
correct battery is hard to remove because it has to pulled out at the exact
correct angle.

Other than these issues, it's just a mix of regular late 70's Mercedes
issues.

I am thinking about buying a 280CE. Apart from the usual 123 coupe body
issues, any flags on this engine and drive train? Seems to have been a low
production model. Anybody ever had one? Gary-didn't you have one??

 Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dwight

That would describe me if I bought the 500SEL euro that somebody 100 miles away
seems unable to sell for $2k. It would be fun for the occasional local drive,
and would make a great tow truck if I build a heavy duty hitch for it.

Of course, I really don't need it.

You may not need it, but coupes are FUN FUN! I wish I hadn't gotten rid of
my first NA 300CD! They are so much quieter on the road and handle so much
better than the W123 sedans. I like the room in the 1983 300SD, but it just
doesn't have that sporty feel to it.

Thanks Kevin,
I am going to pursue this one. It's about 85 miles away, so will go look at
it after the holiday. I passed on a 300CD that needed some work and now
regret it.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE

2008-07-02 Thread Gary Hurst
i have a rather rough one. i love it as a beater. big windows with no b
pillar. slightly shorter wheelbase. it's a very pleasant car and i
probably drive it more than any other car i own

a lot of people don't like the us spec m110 as it is over thirsty and low
powered. it is a very pleasant underpowered gas guzzler.

the real caveat i would have is that if you require a nice one, you will
have to get lucky, especially if you require a nice one cheap. you might
have better luck hunting down a w126 sec.

Re: [MBZ] 280CE convertible 4sale in TX

2005-08-04 Thread Steve MacSween
Anyone know anything about these? I have seen one pictured before somewhere,
but it would be nice to know who made it, were they sold through dealers in
Europe, etc.

There are some good specialty coachbuilders in Europe who do convertibles,
OTOH there are some hacks in the Baltics who just take a sawzall to the roof
of cars and stick on a cheap canvas top.
