Re: [MBZ] 300TD hatch struts

I have heard this before. But the strut bolts on my 79 TD came out with an
ordinary (manual) socket set. Maybe I was just lucky (and much younger).

As I recall, the factory used red loctite, which requires heat to
deactivate.

Re: [MBZ] 300TD hatch struts

2021-11-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The heat I used was a 1/2 inch air wrench with 120 psi air supply. It spun
them right out. On install, I cleaned the threads with a wire brush and
used a dot of red loctite, torqued to spec [don't ask what the spec is, I
don't remember, but I remember looking it up, at the time.] As someone
suggested, make sure the torque bit is seated properly before applying
force, removal or install.
Think of it as a fun adventure... ;)) ... the fun is not getting whacked in
the head once you replace the struts.. I did mine about 4 years ago, used
it today and still works like new.

Yes, they’re in the roof area and require removal of the headliner. The bolts
that hold the ends into the roof anchor point have anti-seize on them from the
factory and are tough to remove if they’re the originals. They take a Torx
style bit - make sure it’s a high quality one, as you definitely don’t want to
strip the fastener out.

You also need to remove the rear speakers and drop the headliner to expose
the torx fitting that holds the strut in place. I once accidentally
tightened the torx bolt rather than loosened it. It was hell to break it
loose.

Re: [MBZ] 300TD hatch struts

2021-11-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
When I did mine it wasn't such a bad job. But I cheated by making an
adjustable prop to hold the tailgate while I did the R&R of the struts. I
used two pieces of 2x4 and two C clamps. Lay the 2x4 sections side by side
[flat side to flat side] and cut them long enough to have a good overlap
[18 inches] when the tailgate is fully open. Put one end on the ground
[driveway] the top end in the lip of the tailgate [make sure it has good
purchase so it stays in place. Tighten the clamps like you mean it.
With the gate held open take one side off and replace with a new one... To
get the old one off and the new one on, you will need to "crowd the
tailgate up to gain just a bit more room to make the connection. To do that
use the "sliding prop with clamps" you just made to gain the extra 2 inches
of travel you need.
DO NOT DISCONNECT BOTH SIDES AT THE SAME TIME...
Take a break, and do the second one.. adjust as necessary, but I just
followed the marks left by the old ones and the gate fits exactly right.
If you have a helper who can follow instructions, use them to lift or shift
to give you that extra wiggle room if you need it.. It can be done by
yourself, however.
