On my 124 cars, the nuts are copper I think, I know they are not steel.
They are one-time-use, designed to come off easily without corrosion
welding them to the stud.

Do not go to your local hardware store and buy the nuts they have.

Use the proper nuts supplied by Mercedes.

Use the factory copper plated ones. Otherwise they tend to seize.

[MBZ] 300td 1982 turbo travails

2014-08-25 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

Well despite lots of injector etc maintenance my 300td has been getting weak.
We did a compression test and got something like 420 on all cyls, so that is
good.

I knew i had an exhaust leak. I had thought it was the flex pipe, but alas
inspection revealed that my exhaust (and intake manifolds) were loose and the
gasket fairly blown.

I spent about 4 hours with a helper getting it all off …. several nuts were
missing

We're going to clean it all and replace the seals and gaskets. I'll probably
take the turbo apart for some inspection.

It took 3 or 4 hours and wasn't too bad, but not too easy either.

I'm going to replace my oil sump while i am in there. Hopefully it will run
with proper power when the manifolds are not sucking air or blowing exhaust.

what kind of nuts should i use on the exhaust? they appear to be 17mm wrench
plain 10mm threaded nuts

thanks,

xx rick
