Hi Tom,
BTW, When did you come to own such a beauty?Have you been working on
it for a long time or is it a new project? What's the general condition of
the car? From the photo I saw of the front of the car it sure looks like a
beauty!

Does it have any history? Like being owned my Marlene Dietrick (sp?) ?
;-) That car must have really turned heads back in the 30s when it was
first released - because it sure turns heads now ;-) I'll bet cruising on
the interstate is an amazing experience in the 500K. How many speeds in
the gearbox?

Not trying to pry - just curious -

I certainly don't own the car - I don't even own a dishwasher! The nice
thing about working for a car museum is that you get to drive cars
several orders of magnitude beyond the means of mere mortals. It is in
low #1 condition.

Does it have any history? Like being owned my Marlene Dietrick (sp?) ?

History is unknown, other than that the previous owner was a doctor in
Germany who could no longer afford to restore the car due to socialized
medicine (or so say the car's notes). Cruising down the interstate is
probably a lot of work, if today's drive at 20mph is any indication - it
is a lot of car to handle and the clutch, shifter, and steering require
a great deal of force and care. It is a four-speed with a bizarre shift
pattern (incorrect knob in the pics for some reason):
R 2
|__|
  | |
  1 3-4
No synchro on first. Third is direct and fourth is overdrive with no
clutch required. Just move the lever and it will engage when revs match.

I don't know too much of the history of the car. It was a basket-case

It has been sitting in a museum since 2004 and hadn't been run since,
until last week.

Does it always have so much positive camber? Scary!

It was up on the lift before the pictures were taken and hadn't moved
yet. They straighten out in a couple of feet.

Also, what's the other oldie behind the 201?

We could probably do that, but I really don't like driving cars of this

The M24 is plain old OHV. If you wanted overhead cams, you had to buy a
Duesenberg. The normally aspirated J made 265hp from 6.8L and the
supercharged version, SJ, was good for 320hp. But it lacked the drama
queen antics of the Mercedes. And the MB engine puts out 157hp, not 137

Tom - what metal is the firewall made from? Sure looks like new - how
 did that happen?
 Do you have before pictures?

It is aluminum, and looks pretty much like the original firewall on the
'39 540K which is the next project. The original machining is slightly
less uniform than that in the pictures. I've got some before pictures
someplace. It was basically a derelict-in-boxes in 1996. The body was
built from scratch; the frame and drivetrain are original.

I have heard that the supercharger engagement was quite dramatic --
it was electrically switched just like the kickdown switch. 98 to
137 hp at the click of a switch had to be fun.

My mechanic friend's stepfather aquired Rommel's staff car in the
late 40's as a junker, but it ran long enough for the two of them to
take it for a short run on the autobahn, sitting on milk crates. He
said he fell over backwards when the supercharger cut in, but the
engine tossed a main bearing so they never drove it again.

Big beast of a car, though.

Did you use the leftover paint on the W140, it looks like it's the
same color?

Wow! I thought that 500K was referring to the mileage on one of your cars.
There aren't too many 500K's around! What size engine does it have (500
mean 5.0 liter?).
