And just to clarify, drag the image file to the "Restore from” rather than the
DVD as described.

2015-11-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Yeah, I am following the instructions at:
http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

1. Open Disk Utility and select the Flash Drive
	2.	Select the Erase tab on the right and then set Format
to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Name the partition you'll be creating
Snow Leopard or OS X Install so you can keep track of your
installation device. After you've done this, click the Erase button.

Step 2 won't complete. When I "click on the "erase" button, it said
the source has not been verified, but offers no way to verify. When
I go to the "first aid" tab of the disk utility, find the file, and
click verify, it verifies, but then the "restore" tab does the same
thing on the nest try to "restore."

I tried copy paste to put the files on the USB stick but that does
not show up as bootable.

Still frustrating!

Thanks for any suggestions.

The same. Get the image file and load it on to a bootable USB stick
and you're done.

Format the USB drive first. Put it in, run Disk Utility, and create a single
partition on it that is Mac OS Extended. Screw the erase stuff, that’s silly.

As you know, creating a new partition on it will blow anything that’s on it
away, so erasing is moot. If you just bought the USB drive, I’ll bet you $10
it’s formatted in FAT or NTFS. Once you’ve created a new partition in a Mac
format it should be just fine.

Then do your restore to the USB using the disk image.

In Disk Utility, you’ll see both the physical disk, then the volume that’s on
it below. You won’t see the Partition tab unless you’re highlighting the
physical disk, NOT the volume.

Snag an external DVD drive and go USB or Firewire. You can also use another
mac to install it

[MBZ] A Mac question

2015-11-15 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Mac ?

I am trying to upgrade the old macbook 1.1 from 10.5 to 10.6 so I can
get a web browser that works.

Thanks to Dan, I have the disk image for the 10.6 install. It won't
boot from the computer; says I have to put it on a disk. It won't
work on a normal dvd, but wants a dual layer DVD+ -. There are no
dual layer blank dvds to be bought in town, unless the univ bookstore
has some tomorrow. None at floormart or at worstbuy. Staples packed
up the tent and left.

I bought a WD "my passport" external drive, and first used it to back
up the machine HD. After the "must burn to disk" warning, i thought
I could put the install file on the external drive and boot from
that. No dice! It seems that the WD external drives made explicitly
for Mac won't boot from a mac. So, what is the mac equivalent of the
MBR from a winders drive?

The next option seems to be a 16 GB USB stick. I've found scripts to
use to make a USB stick bootable using terminal. At this point, and
with 10 dvd DL costing $20-30, it seems like the USB stick may be the
shortest route to success.

Anyone BTDT? What are your thoughts, Mac guys? Thanks

Hmm, that's very interesting, as I have 10.6 on a factory DVD and it's
single layer, the drive in my early Intel books is not dual layer.

how big is the image? If it will fit on a single layer DVD, try using
Disk Utility to burn it. I usually use DragonBurn, it's much faster
and less cranky though.

2015-11-15 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Thanks Peter. Good thoughts, as usual! It said it is 6.4Gb. I
tried several times using normal dvds. My MBPro 8.1 will burn DL,
but I didn't stop to check the macbook 1.1 combo drive. If it won't
read DL, then the USB may be the only option.

I think I'll try buying a new USB Stick tomorrow.

There is a possibility of using "boot from remote drive" but I have
not researched the requirements for doing so.

The universal disk is bigger than the specifics, the 10.6 disk is DL.

Macs won't boot from a HD unless it's got the OS 'installed' on it.
I think it was on purpose.

On my 10.6 machine, I get all kinds of warnings that it won't run on

solve the problem.

Take it to 10.6 and everything is all good. That is what I am
