That stuff can work if the leak is slow enough that you only need to
recharge once a year. If you are losing the charge in days or weeks,
the leak is probably too big for a stop-leak product to work.

Re: [MBZ] AC BLOWS ICE COLD

2011-06-22 Thread Hans Neureiter
Lucky Rich.
My '82 SD was blowing just fine as far as cold 134a A/C goes.
Bought it in '95.
Some 3 years ago that went south.
I recharged the thing. Lasted 6 months (mostly through the winter).
Couldn't find the leak and left it allone.
At the beginning this month I couldn't leave it alone any longer.
Found the problem -- Compressor seal.
1 new compressor $ 250
1 new drier/receiver $ 30
1 new Exp. Device $ 20
4 cans R134a @ $10/
After all that, pressures not quite right (300/barely 35), duct air not more
than 25 F below ambient (~100).
A bystander mentioned that The fan there on the radiator is not running.
New Aux fan $ 100 (aftermarket).
Now, after nearly $ 500 -- no A/C.
Latest culprit: R134a conversion L/P valve insert ($ 0,25).
And the S/M says: check for leaks!!
Just like Marshall and the fuses. It's the small things that can kill 'ya.

Still have to take the radiator out to check the back side of the condenser.
Of course, at this point is wouldn't hurt to just buy one and change it, for

I think the evaporator is also different.

On my '87 wagon, once I get the new head on, I'm going to try that ES-12 stuff
the Jaime posted a while back, keep the r12 expansion valve (may replace with a
new part). If that doesn't work out, will try a r134 expansion valve with r134.

Speaking of the new head, machine shop reports that it checks out just fine,
but
they couldn't source the valve guide seals so I called Mr. Q to resolve that.
Hope to have the new head later this week or early next week, still need to get
the old head off though.

 right.
I dumped a can of 134 in it a coupla weeks ago, I guess it was enough to get
it
to BLOW ICE COLD.

96F this afternoon, the 134 converted Mamabenz was BLOWING ICE COLD. It was
even making condensation on the outside of the windshield at the base above
the
 vents. I was impressed.

Re: [MBZ] AC BLOWS ICE COLD

2011-06-21 Thread Dieselhead
For valve seals, ALWAYS use either Gen-u-wine MB from the
stealership, or from Mr. Q or at least OE from Rusty. Never, EVER
let a machine shop get valves seals for you.

Gen-u-wine, even from a stealership at 3x the list price are a lot
cheaper than a do-over.

I think the evaporator is also different.

On my '87 wagon, once I get the new head on, I'm going to try that ES-12 stuff
the Jaime posted a while back, keep the r12 expansion valve (may
replace with a
new part). If that doesn't work out, will try a r134 expansion
valve with r134.

Speaking of the new head, machine shop reports that it checks out
just fine, but
they couldn't source the valve guide seals so I called Mr. Q to resolve that.
Hope to have the new head later this week or early next week, still
need to get

the old head off though.

Re: [MBZ] AC BLOWS ICE COLD

2011-06-20 Thread Peter Frederick
They work fine IF the condenser is clean and there is no air in the
system (and no leaks, of course). My 300D was so cold in the highway
there was condensation blowing out the vents!

However, I still have a leak, I suspect in the condenser or the
evaporator. I'm hoping condenser, as I heard a hiss up there.
Easier to replace.
