[MBZ] Adjusting the valves

2014-07-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I finally got to work on this poor old car and pulled the cam cover off
and started on the valves this weekend.
I ran out of time so it is sitting in the garage waiting for me to come
back to it.
I have 3 valves left to adjust. The intake on 4 and on 5 and the exhaust
on 5.
I sort of got stalled out on the exhaust on 5 as it is very tight to
work in there. The valve is up against the cam tower and the wrenches
are long enough that they bump into a support from the firewall and a
wiring harness.
I have been digging around for some other wrench that may work better. I
have a short 14 mm and will try it next. If that does not do it, then I
may be looking for a junk 14 mm to see if I can modify it some.
All of the valves so far have been tight except for one. The intake on 1
was on spec at .004.

The exhaust valves should be .012 but have mostly been .009.
The intakes are supposed to be .004 but are too tight to read with a
feeler gauge.

Turning the engine over by using the nut on the end of the power
steering pump worked fine after I figured out how to do it. The pump is
mounted low on the driver's side of the car so there is not much room to
reach in. I have a fairly long 22 mm combination wrench and it worked on
the box end but not well due to the angle of the handle. I mucked about
trying other wrenches like a crowfoot on a breaker bar but nothing
really fit. I finally tried using the open end of the wrench and it
worked fine. A bit slow as I can only move it a bit and then have to
re-set the wrench but not too bad all things considered. I just did the
valves in the order that they came up on the cam and not in number order
so I did not turn the cam any more than necessary.

I hope to do the last 3 this evening so I can put it all back together.
The only disturbing part has been that something appeared to fall
between the injection pump and the block. I have no idea what as I did
not see what it might have been and have no idea what might be missing.
I see nothing on the floor under the car and I can see nothing in
between the engine and the pump. I will fish around with my magnet but
since I don't know what I am looking for, I don't even know if it might
be magnetic etc. Perhaps when I put it back together, there will be
something obviously missing.

I got a couple of cheap India wrenches at HF or a pawn shop or something
for like a $USbuck apiece and put the torch to them to bend them to the
proper angles to do the job easier. If you have a tight space you could
cut one down too. I had done the job once before on the 300TD with
regular wrenches and it stimulated Foul Oaths; whereas, the bent
wrenches made it a lot easier the second time I did it.

I have the special set of bent wrenches bought from Rusty years back.
They work fine on all the valves but this one. May have to see what I
can bend to work better on it.
