I may be lazy but not all that multi-thumbed and can certainly spray
Dewhatzit on the mast. Besides, last night the radio was performing just
fine so maybe it self-cured while we were in Atlanta for the weekend.

Shoot Deoxit into the antenna as it moves up and down. It will
 self-clean
any corrosion, lubricate the mechanism, and increase your reception.
  BTDT
on 3 different antennas. It even helps against freezing in place :)

 CLean what, where?

Take out antenna and mast. Clean where it attaches to the
body, and clean out the bore where the mast goes. Check
inside where the sheath attaches, too. Mostly it's just
eyeball everything while it's apart looking for looseness,
broken metal fingers, and dirt.

There are copper leaf spring doohickeys that ground the antenna

Some kind of problem there? Could perhaps use a good cleaning

My new problem is that when I turn the radio on it cuts off when the mast is
fully extended. If I manually lower using the switch, the radio springs
back to life. The problem is intermittent, however, as the radio will
sometime operate normally with the antenna fully extended for a long period
of time (and vice versa). Any clues?

2008-03-11 Thread R A Bennell
Sounds like it is grounding out somehow. Contact to ground is happening when
the antenna is fully extended. When
you lower it a bit, the contact is broken and no more grounding fo the antenna
core. Is there a rubber or plastic
isolator of some sort that has broken or worn out?

[MBZ] Antenna success

2007-03-15 Thread Glenn Brown
I had to take it apart again to try to figure out why it wouldn't
extend/retract after my cleaning the internal plastic drive ribbon and main
drive wheels of some minor gunk. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong,
as there was continuity across the red green wires attached to the little
antenna drive motor. The only thing I can think of is that either 1) One of
the bottom rubber stand-offs was dislodged upon my initial reinstallation
creating a slight angle and more mechanical resistance than that little
motor could drive, and/or 2) I first reinstalled the antenna without it
being fully retracted, but I don't know why this would cause it not to work
at all. The good news is that it's working now and all sections fully
extend . . . viola.
