My old 2002 F150 Supercrew has about 178K miles on it now. It had about
90K miles on it when I bought it in the fall of 2006.
I did not have a whole lot of trouble with it despite not knowing much
about its early life.
I did some front end work - ball joints, etc and replaced rear axle
seals a couple of times and a pinion seal once. Also things like brakes 2X.
Spark plugs once, 3 or 4 COPs but those were not really the fault of the
truck - aftermarket command start setup had a wire that shorted out.
It had developed a bit of a growl in the front end that was getting
worse over time. My mechanic son thought it was the left front wheel
bearing and replaced that about the time that I gave him the truck.
It helped but did not cure the noise so he has continued to hunt it
down. He recently replaced the right front bearing as well but it is
still making the noise. He hates to throw parts at it without being
fairly certain he is going to fix it but so far the fix is elusive. He
wonders about a bearing in the front differential too but is going to
check some other things first. He drives it back and forth to work which
is maybe 5 to 10 miles each way and listens to it and stews about it.
The only unfortunate thing is that he really does not consider it
reliable to take out of town the way it is. He wonders if it is
something as simple as the tires wearing a little unevenly etc. He has
rotated the tires and says he thinks it changes things a bit but does
not make it go away. We also wonder if it is nothing more than the cold
since this has been a miserable winter and if it might go away once the
weather warms a bit. Cold rubber tires may make different noise than
nice warm tires. A bit frustrating as one likes to think a vehicle is
good to go no matter where one wants to go.

Cannot complain about the engine, transmission etc. No oil burning and
transmission shifts nicely. It has a couple of bugs that need to be
addressed but my son plans to check some things once it warms up a bit.
It has a tendancy to stall when it is really hot out - like over 90F. He
also experienced a little stalling issue when it was really cold out and
the block heater plug failed him. Plans among other things to check the
intake to see if it has become a bit gummed up and if so to clean it.

Has a little rust in the rocker panels but apart from that the body is
fine (apart from a few minor dents from a hail storm too on the hood and
the roof). My son plans to do something with the rust this summer too.

So, all in all it was good enough that I bought another F150 Supercrew.
The new one feels very similar but has evolved into a different truck -
different engine, transmission, front suspension etc. I hope this one is
as good or better. I am relatively easy on a vehicle (in my opinion
anyway) so it should do at least as well since this one was acquired
with about 7K miles on it.

I must agree. For us old-timers, the longevity of modern cars (US and
import) is quite remarkable, despite increased complexity. Many cars from
the 1950s and 1960s would be worn out (and rusted out up north) at 50K miles
and a 100K miles was a remarkable achievement. My 03 GMC truck and 08
Outback have required nothing but tires, batteries, and scheduled
maintenance. Still, owner abuse, bad maintenance, or no maintenance can
kill any car.

I tend to believe that all cars will need attention at that mileage.  Age and
wear will require a few parts to be dealt with so the car remains on the road.
What happens to most cars, is they hit 90k service and regular service stops.
Dad's 1990 Camry got all the visits, but was in need of suspension service by
190K.  Probably should have done it at 150k.

Frosch has 212k on the clock, she got upgraded suspension at least 15k miles
ago.

Forgot the old Previa van. Sold that on a few years back. AWD was still good,
but needed new CV joints up front. Very solid transport that had no subsystem
failures. I got it with 101K on the clock, but another 100.

I usually get the oil changed at the dealer, since they always send me coupons
for $18 oil changes. They use a Ford semi-synthetic, whatever that is.

Just had it changed at Jiffy Lube yesterday. These guys are idiots. The last

It aint your daddy's Escort.

Just about any car today should provide 200,000 miles more or less trouble free
with basic maintenance.

The used car market is pretty spendy right now. If I were going to get a much
newer car I'd almost certainly buy new, with 0.9% financing available its
almost like being paid to buy a car...

Angie wants me to revisit a new car, I need to test drive a Ford Fiesta with a
5spd. I've driven them with an auto (I forget what Ford calls their version of
DSG) and I don't like it. I also don't like the Focus particularly, I've got
one as a rental this week and it feels more cramped than the physically smaller
Fiesta.

I'd consider a Passat but probably wouldn't go diesel, I'm not excited about
DEF and the filter and the problems they have with turbos and the dealer's
incompetence...

I guess I'll leave money on the table. I would rather move it quickly than have
to wade through the tire kickers, lowballers, etc., that I would otherwise
encounter.

I need the driveway space. Bad.
