Re: [MBZ] Are you watching myth busters right now?

2006-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond

I ran a gallon through my 240D, it didn't seem to hurt anything.
If I had a good source here in MA of veggie oil at a reasonable price like
$1.25 a gallon I'd say in some. Unfortunately I don't really have anywhere to
keep it yet
so I'd be limited to 10 gallons or so. Once we get our house I intend to see
about
getting 100 gallons or so. Plan on just mixing it in with the diesel. If I can
get it for
$1.50 a gallon and I mix 25% thats $6 a week assuming fuel doesn't get any more
expensive and
I don't need to drive any less (both are bad assumptions).

turns out veggie acts as kind of a solvent and does a nice job of
bringing
all the algae and such into the fuel system.

about 15 inline filters later, all was well

i have some doubts about using veggie long term, but largely because i
consider it unproven. my neighbor is a veggie nut and he has run maybe
9k
miles on it.

cheap/free fuel is very appealing though, too appealing right now to
think
that veggie is going to go away. our friend oren will deliver ready to
go
veggie fuel at $1.25 a gallon for those who dont want to mess with it.
or
you can just gather and make your own for cost of your time and effort.

Howdy -
A couple of weeks ago my battery and alternator died. Installed a new
battery and an alternator from Rusty and all was well.

Tonight my wife was starting to work - got about 5 miles from home and she
called to say the ABS light was on - then the SRS light came on and the AC
slowed down as the battery seemed to die. She turned around and transferred
to the 240D (old reliable) before heading off to work again. I tried to
restart it after she pulled into the driveway and it would not turn over.

I plan to charge the battery overnight and put my meter on it tomorrow
to see what the alt and battery are doing.

Is that the best way to proceed?

Does it sound like I may have a bad alternator and/or battery -

I'm no whiz on electrical stuff so any ideas would be helpful - also, I'll
check the battery cables and ground straps 1st but I checked them a while
back and they were OK - but I'll check again.

They didn't use an amp. They made a crank on the back of the
transmission and hooked a rod to drive a 4 foot mythbusters speaker
directly off the transmission.
It generated roughly 160 db @ 15hz. It blew the sunroof out a bit, but
aside from the speaker self destructing, that was pretty much the extent
of the damage.

Well, they had it lik in a 2 liter bottle hanging above the hood as I
recall, but yeah, pretty anticlimactic, it just worked.
The only thing that made me a bit worried was they ended it with: Yeah, you

Umm... sure, depending on where you live and how long you want it to
work...

Kinda lik some of their other auto tests, like throwing sugar and bleach and

It's probably my favorite show, but they really don't seem to do much

Re: [MBZ] Are you watching myth busters right now?

2006-08-17 Thread mfinch
I've run about two tanks of pure vegetable oil through so far. The engine
runs quieter (vegetable oil has better lubricity that dino diesel) and it
starts much more quickly than it used to. My theory about that is the
solvent qualities of the vegetable oil have cleaned out the injectors.

2006-08-17 Thread Bob Rentfro
I've put two consecutive tankfuls of bio in since I've several trips
downtown to take SWMBO to jury duty (that takes me right past the lone bio
pump in town). I had to get emissions done yesterday and it was comical
watching those knucks. My yucking it up was split between their yearly
confusion on how to deal with my car and their stupid looks wondering what
that odd smell was and where it was coming from.

still better than 3 bucks a gallon though, no?

plus the advantage of everyone being able to smell you coming from 2 miles
away

Costs are not insignificant. Pumps, motors, filters, storage
containers, hydraulic couplings, tubing, all add up. Not to mention
what you have to do to your car.

i've actually run the same experiment on my 81 TD

ran nicely for about 5 miles, albeit it smelled funny.

turns out veggie acts as kind of a solvent and does a nice job of
bringing
all the algae and such into the fuel system.

about 15 inline filters later, all was well

i have some doubts about using veggie long term, but largely because i
consider it unproven. my neighbor is a veggie nut and he has run maybe
9k
 miles on it.

cheap/free fuel is very appealing though, too appealing right now to
think
that veggie is going to go away. our friend oren will deliver ready to
go
veggie fuel at $1.25 a gallon for those who dont want to mess with
it. or
you can just gather and make your own for cost of your time and effort.

Well, they had it lik in a 2 liter bottle hanging above the hood as I

The only thing that made me a bit worried was they ended it with:
Yeah,
  you
can just run your diesel on straight vegetable oil without a problem
