6 cylinder appeals to me - what is the total displacement...it is in-line, I
imagine...slant 6? Turbo?

Are they any good?

Back then, Bee-Em-Vay model numbers made sense. 324d was 2.4L inline
six, 524td was the same engine in the larger chassis with the turbo.
A bit more powerful than a 2.5L mbz turbo, maybe 125-135hp. Much
stronger than a 240d.
Seems like the top end (valvetrain, head) is less reliable than mbz.
I don't know what kind of injection pump it has.

They use a Bosch VE injection pump, similar to those found on the early
Cummins 6BT and VW/Volvo diesels. Nice cars. I'd certainly buy one if the
price were right.

Be prepared to pay through the nostrils for any parts needed. The
good news is that IF the parts are available Rusty can get them. I'd
bet that any parts for the engine would have to be shipped from Germany.

Lincoln used the same engine in some of their diesels, perhaps that
bodes a little better for parts availability -- though I'd wager that
VERY few of those Lincolns are still on the road...

Certainly parts will be harder to come by and/or more expensive than
for your SD.

Hrmm... this is only about an hour from my parent's house. If I was
going down there this weekend I'd check it out (I'm about 3.5 hours from
them). Probably a good thing as I really don't need any more cars!

Looks to be in really good shape though!

Au contraire, I imagine no fewer (proportionally) of those are still
on the road than any other early-'80s American car. But very few of
them were made. You think an '87 300D wagon is rare? There were only
500 or so Lincoln Mark VII turbodiesels made in '84 and '85. Some
Continentals, too---not sure how many.

Many parts are still available through Ford dealers, and the service
manuals too---the engine sections are a lot more helpful, I'm told,
for working on the 524td than the BMW manuals.

Got to be careful with hot cars. Don't let your mother drive it.
My younger son, Tom, has a friend with a black BMW 733 (or something like that
- big 4 dr beast with a V8). Last
weekend his mother took it out shopping. On the way home she wrecked it.
Apparently, she pulled over to the side of
the road to let an ambulance go by and when she pulled back onto the roadway,
she nailed the gas a bit hard and
shot accross both lanes and into the ditch on the other side of the road
causing significant damage to the front
end. Have not seen it so I don't know how bad it is but sad if they write it
off as it was quite a nice older car.

YOW! Thats a hot car. I'd definately drive one of those.
I get the feeling its going to go for real actual money though.
Fueleconomy.gov says 21-28 mpg which is better than the same year 300D (19-23)
which is IIRC a w123.
